Can I be any further removed?

http://www.fashionweekdaily.com/home/default.sps

It's 9:26 pm on a Friday night. I have been home for approximately one hour. Most of that time I have been reading blogs - gotta lot of catching up to do - when I get to Ann's (Gorgeous Things) blog....and I want to cry!

Not because she spent a day in NY! Not because she got to go to a show in the tents! I have done that and remember the thrill of sitting in the audience and feeling so special because I was there...and Cindy did you go yet? Did you have a good time?

No, I wanted to cry because it's Friday, Fashion Week is officially over and I haven't thought about it once...okay maybe just thought about it quickly...once or twice this week when I was on the 6:17 am bus to NYC whilst looking over someone's shoulder at their paper!

Now I know you are all shaking your head and wondering what is the big deal? Well, I love fashion! I majored in Fashion Merchandising in college. I have worked in and out of the fashion industry up until the last 9 or 10 years. At my last job, financial institution also, I at least took the bus up and down 42nd Street so I got to watch the tents go up...and at lunch time I could head over to pick up the daily papers. I also made sure that I picked up a newspaper so that I could see what the fashion editors thought was hot!

But have I done any of that this week....nooooooo! I haven't thought about fashion. I haven't looked at fashion and I d*mn sure haven't sewn anything! Now there is definitely something wrong with this situation...when did my life become all about a job! *sigh* It is more than time to re-evaluate my priorities!

So I guess I will spend a lot of time this weekend on Style.com and the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week site trying to catch up with what will be hot for fall '08...but this is sad people, just sad...

  1. Maybe the new job wasn't such a good thing? Sorry you haven't had a moment to even think about your passion. Hope the weekend is better. g

  2. I do not care for how your job is impacting your fashion life :(

I had no idea you were a fashion merchandising major back in college!

I also didn't know Lost was online! I'm getting ready to watch now.

  3. Hope you can get all caught up. Sigh, from the other side of the world I can only live vicariously through you New York gals. Not that my lifestyle or city call for any high fashion but a gal can look even if she'll never really wear. Thanks for the link to the Mercedes-Benz fashion site.

  4. Thanx for steering me to the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week website. Almost as good a being there. Maybe even better, moins cher, and lots of fun. Loved the fashion, hair, makeup and slenderness....oh, well.....

  5. That pesky job getting in the way of sewing, eh? Sounds like it's time to show it who's the boss.

  6. Carolyn, I so feel your sadness. Maybe it's just a mid-life thing (I just turned 50) but once again, I have a good job (Executive Assistant) but I don't feel any joy in it. What I do to support myself is so far removed from what I love. I have begun to wonder how I would translate all the business skills I learned into something wonderful for myself. (And still be able to not live in my car!!!)

  7. I didn't know that you were a fashion merchandising major! How fun!

Don't feel bad, you're not alone - I didn't seem to have much of an interest this year, probably because I'm almost 8 months pregnant and none of those clothes would look good on me now. Maybe I'll get back into the groove in a couple of months???

  8. Oh Carolyn, it'll be ok...but I understand the frustration. I'm sorry you're not able to feed your fashion hunger this week, but I hope you absorb tons of inspiration online.

  9. Don't feel too bad, most of us don't have fashion/sewing related jobs. But in the end these jobs take care of the cost of life and of buying the fabrics and notions for our great passion. Happy snoop shopping and hope you get a lot of inspiration!

  10. Carolyn, I "over"stand how you feel about the job taking over your life. Lately, I'm faced with a similar situation. Hope you get to spend sometime enjoying fashion in one form or another.

  11. Carolyn, thank you so much for sharing the link to the Mercedes Benz Fashion website. I really appreciate it. Also, I love it that www.style.com lets one sign up for daily fashion updates. When I was employed, I did very little sewing as life was always getting in the way. Now, that I'm retired life still gets in the way but I do sew a little every month. Hopefully, life will let you get back to your sewing and enjoy your blogs and fashion shows.

  12. Oh honey, I'm sorry if my post contributed to making you cry! If it makes you feel any better, I have been unable to sew anything for myself (the BeSewStylish jacket doesn't count - that's work) in about two weeks. I know, cry me a river; but I keep looking at my gorgeous Chanel boucle languishing on my table and wishing I could just tell everything else (except TLo) to pound sand and do what I want to do!

  13. If your job is making you so unhappy then it is definitely time re examine your priorities. It also seems that your depression leading to not sewing and not sewing is leading to more depression. Vicious cycle.
Thanks for the Mercedes Benz Fashion site. Much better photos than Style.com and no pop ups.

  14. Sounds to me like you need a vacation, and I don't mean a sewing vacation. Can you get away for a few days? Go visit an out of town sibling or other family member. No pressure to sew or do anything else. That sometimes gets me out of funks.

  15. I learn something new from you frequently. MB Fashion Site. Thanks. I did not know you majored in fashion merchandising.

I hate that your job is getting in the way of sewing. Been there too many times before myself. You will bounce back, you must! You inspire many of us, we can not do without you sewing and sharing! This too will pass.

  16. Carolyn --
Really hope you can carve out some evenings for rest even if not for sewing quite yet! Your post about the Walmart car cases (love them!) sent me to the net to find more. They are made by Plano molding company, model 531-500, sometimes called Jammers, and although you can find the occasional one at a time for less on Ebay (you'd still have to pay lots of shipping), you can now buy them from a distributor called Space Savers (www.spacesavers.com) in NC, at $9.99 retail. There may be similar stores nearer you that carry them in this price range. I cannot imagine with all the sewing people wanting them why Walmart won't carry them.

I hope work slows down a bit this week (how often have we gone without a weekend posting from Carolyn!???) so that life becomes normal again.

    Meg in NC

  17. Sometimes rest is more important.

Just remember that time will pass and you will eventually get some energy back. (maybe it's the dark energy drain of winter that's making it more difficult? as the days get longer, the situation will probably improve; I know it does for me)
