Prada Inspired

So what was the one thing that stood out, chased me in my sleep, caused me so much grief that I just couldn't stand it anymore....(insert scream!) those Prada ads in all the September fashion magazines.

I kept looking at them and wondering just "how" could I make that lace look "corporate!" How could I manage to make just one piece fit into my oh-so-by-the-book corporate workplace? Question number 2 was, where would I be able to find a piece of lace as wonderfully gorgeous as the pieces Prada was using but without the amazing price...

Here are my two favorite pieces from the Prada line:

And while at Metro Textiles today with a friend...I found this:

Yes, two yards of a lace that with a brown silk charmeuse lining would make my "version" of this amazing skirt! I've decided that I won't be able to wear it on important meeting days or even on regular work days but it could be worn on "Casual Fridays" with a silk twinset. I've decided that Fridays this fall will be "Fashion Fridays" for me unless there is a meeting scheduled...that way I can indulge my love of fashion while they are giving khaki its due! *LOL*

For more information on the Prada Skirt - there is a piece in today's NYTimes about it. Thanks Lyra for pointing me that way...

So I have my fabric, my TNT straight skirt pattern and now all I need is an afternoon to become "Prada Inspired!"

  1. Some designers on the shopping channels were saying the lace is coming in big time and was all over the runways. One had a lace twin set in the collection that I thought was nice. mssewcrazy

  8. You are my hero! I'm going to do Fashion Fridays, too! Only, my boss is 2 and I'll have to limit my fashions to those of which crayon and beefaroni wash out...

And does anyone know where I can get those fab boots in the first pic????

  11. After contemplating the Prada laces and yours, I realized that I have a cotton lace in light yellow that I can dye black. It has been sitting in my stash for several years now. Thanks for the inspiration!
My question for you is she apparently just hemmed them. I wonder if she faced them with something, or just turned and hemmed. What's your take on this and what do you plan on doing?

  12. Thought that I had left you an earlier message. Guess I didn't copy those d'd letters right! I love your lace and you will look gorgeous in this. Great color too. When I first saw the gorgeous laces, I thought oh, dressy, but I really like the idea of wearing them with t shirts for daytime.

    2. Lurve the skirts, the lace, the whole shebang. I'm a lace girl through and through and it looks like this is my year to revel in it.
    3. That chocolate alencon lace skirt is going to be TDF, and you'll be fashionable on Fridays And dressed well enough to be able to man the desk if someone should drop in.
4.From the NYT article "It works just as well for the office during the day as it does for a cocktail party after hours." - wonder what kind of office she's thinking?

oh, I'm so geared for fall sewing, and I'm still stuck on sister and formalwear sewing. I want to start sewing fall.

  16. Oh, I love the idea of Fashion Fridays. I might have to do that too, since it is my usual shopping day and just because I don't have a day job there's no reason I have to look schlumpy, now is there?

  20. Hi, Carolyn.

I thought about you & your sewing while looking through the latest National Geographic.

They are posting photos from amateurs. One gentleman took a photo of 3 women as they walked away from him. The woman in the middle has a light colored skirt with some tremendous style. And I immediately thought of you and your attention to detail. It just really looked like something you would sew up!

PS. Love the Brown lace. You will look great in it!

  21. Carolyn....You are going to laugh but you have no idea what a pick me up your blog has been the last few weeks. I have been reading regularly, but I started a new job a few weeks ago, its been pretty stressful, and with my 5:30am first cup of coffee, I read you, sip and take a few deep breaths...and get moving on my day. Weird, huh? But you've been a bit of therapy! Thanks!

  23. Oh, flashbacks!
One of the first patterns I bought for myself as a teenager in the 80s was a straight skirt that had a lace-overlay option (it was a big trend then, too)! At least this retro element is more tasteful (and flattering) than some!

(I think this is my first comment to your blog... I do love reading though!)

  24. Beautiful fabric and you are such a trendsetter! I like "Fashion Friday"! Fabulous!!!

  25. Lovely skirt. I think you can pull it off on casual Fridays. Here's another idea.... as you get closer to the holidays make a black or black plaid "corporate looking" skirt suit. Trim the skirt with lace around the hem, (not hanging lower than the hem, but as trim on the skirt) Add some lace to the jacket, either around the waist or sleeves or collar and I think you could wear it any old day. Again, not hanging off any edges, but as trim.

Oh, and Kashi sometimes gets stunning lace. I bought some cream color lace a few years ago from him that is to die for. I think I also bought a lighter brown charmeuse to line the lace with.
