So You Wanna Know...

...which dress is my favorite?

Well, I don't have just one! *LOL* And as I look at the poses, I realize that all of them look good but all of them don't wear well!

By season - by two favorites are:
(drumroll pleese!!!)

spring/summer ~ The 60's Mod Border Print Dress

fall/winter ~ The Menswear Lace Dress

Least worn dress ~ Vintage Vogue 5265 (because it's too fiddly!)

Otherwise all of the dresses were worn quite a bit, even mixed in with the dresses that I wore last year. I have to tell you one thing I learned from all the dress-making this year...I much prefer to wear a dress than anything else! I just wish I could wear them all year long!

Now to some questions:
Allyn asked: "Is there a type of thread that you typically use in your sewing projects?"
Yes, I use the Gutterman thread from Atlanta Thread and Supply.

From ATL's website:
"This thread is ideal for all weights of fabrics from ultra lightweight to heavy coat material. May be used on both woven and knitted materials - synthetic and cotton. Perfect for all ladies', men's and children's outerwear, lingerie, knitwear, shirts, blouses, swimwear and household textiles. Guaranteed knot free. Long staple technology gives the most trouble free sewing."

Charlene asked: "If I zigzag finish or serger finish?"
Charlene my pieces are finished on the serger. I've had one so long now that I can't imagine doing without one! To me it's like the microwave...you have one in your kitchen and primarily use it to warm things up but most people can't even imagine not having one anymore. That's my serger! I could clean finish the seams on a garment a variety of ways (and used them when I didn't have a serger) but I don't want to go back there! *smile*

Emily inquired about my bulk purchasing process! Well Emily I actually wrote a post about it in February 2007 called, "It's Time to Restock!" The post talks about what I restock, from where and why! Hope this helps...

Now I know you're wondering about The Dior Dress and why no post on the weekend...well, every once in awhile I must leave my sewing machine and participate in family activities. This last weekend was one of those weekends. Because of that, I am no further along on The Dior Dress but hopefully will get it finished this weekend!

So that's all I've got...more later!

  2. Hello! I am popping out of lurkdom to let you know that I think you are fabulous. And to apologize for somehow missing putting your blog on my list on my blog (no worries there, because only I and a very small handful of my friends read my blog).
Thanks to Kristy in Australia of "Lower Your Presser Foot" fame for reconnecting me to your blog.
I am just beginning garment sewing after quite a few years of slap-dash craft sewing.
Keep up your life-giving sewing - it's a great inspiration!

    Grace and Peace,
    Sarah

  3. Please can you get me out of my misery what is a TNT pattern? I have searched the net and can find loads of refs to TNT patterns but no-one says what TNT stands for? Is it something to do with being knock-out,like dynamite?

I love your dresses, I like the straight ones best, you are so right about them they are comfortable to wear and yet look good too. I have just made a pinafore dress(jumper in American) and i think this will be a good winter style cos it looks good with opaque tights and boots.

I only recently found your blog but I do enjoy it, thanks for taking the time to write it.

  4. Carolyn - I love all your dresses, but I must say I am partial to #9 & #12. Keep those dresses coming - you look like such a fine lady wearing them!

  5. Carolyn, I discovered altanta thread company a few years ago(even though they always had ads in all of the sewing magazines). I started buying gutterman threads because they were great quality at a lower price then what you could get at the local fabric stores. Of course I'm not even going to try to get all of their colors(I thought of doing that once!); every now and again I go to my fabric collection and try to match up fabric from their thread card. When it come, I'm like a kid in a candy store. Keep up the inspiration.

  6. Carolyn I can understand why you can't pick just one because they are all gorgeous! And I hear you on wanting to wear dresses all the time, luckily here in Sydney it is warm enough all year round to do so, bit windy sometimes but that adds to life's excitement!

  7. Janey - TNT means Tried and True Pattern...a pattern that you've used over and over again because it works for you!
