Patterns

Butterick's fall selection is finally up on their website ~ which I'm sure everyone knows by now.  However, I found just two patterns in this grouping that I would purchase.  Normally this is where the complaints would start.  But I've now decided that there is a reason that I've been so unimpressed with the new fall offerings from ALL of the Big 4 pattern companies.  Do you want to know what it is?  It's because I already possess an enormous pattern collection and I don't need to purchase more.

See I have several of those plastic tall file drawer sets full of patterns.  I have patterns in bankers boxes in one daughter's closet.  I have them in filing baskets, on top of a pile of fabric, and in hanging folders...in short I have ALOT of patterns.  Therefore, since I abide with such pattern goodness, it is absolutely unnecessary for me to own more at this time.  The universe has spoken.  That can be the only reason why I have been so unimpressed with the pattern offerings this season.

So do you want to know which two patterns I may purchase?  Cause this is not a surety...all the good pattern sales have come and gone at Club BMV and these two are not worth spending major dollars on...

Butterick 5523

Butterick 5535

...and this one might not make the cut because I'm sure that I already own something that looks like this!  See, see what I mean?  Similar patterns are already in my possession...maybe that's why I'm not falling all over myself to purchase more...it's got to be the universe right?  It can't just be that the pattern companies are neglecting me?  Right?  Please tell me I'm right?!  I don't think I would be able to stand it if my beloved pattern companies had forsaken me!  Cause then what would I do!  Oh wait a minute...how about  use what I've got!  *LOL*

I have plans to sew this weekend...only going out to dinner with some friends Saturday evening so hopefully I can get a few things knocked out to wear next week...

...as always, more later!

  1. I really like 5523 and like you own a plethora of patterns. I may pick up a few Vogue patterns this weekend but if I don't the world won't come to an end. I can just search my stash and find whatever I need!

  2. You are right on point. I have over 500+ patterns. That is a conservative figure. Yeah I really don't need anymore patternssssss!

  3. I really like B5535 and in looking at it I can see a multitude of garments from it like B5147...snickering.... its something about the Lifestyle Wardrobe line.

  4. Okay - I love the top pattern but I'm positive it would make me look pregnant - not a look I aim for!

The second skirt would be very easy to do from the Carolyn pattern and in fact I've done so before.

Can't wait to see what you figure out. But I'm positive you have very similar patterns. And truthfully - you know you wouldn't actually use the pattern anyway - you'd just morph the details you like onto you TNT! Don't spend the money - just print the line drawings out. g

  5. I like 5523 and will probably buy it during the next sale but I will make it more fitted. I will also buy the other Muse dress pattern just because I love the sleeves. I often buy patterns for the details alone!

  6. Carolyn
You have far more patterns than me, but I am finding that to make the garments I want to make, I'm better off starting with something in my pattern stash and morphing it to something close to the desired end result. I'm buying far fewer patterns these days.

  7. I wasn't really digging this Butterick selection, either. I do want that second pattern for the skirt. That's it. :-)

  8. My problem with that first pattern is that it looks like a dress from the front and a coat from the back. It requires very thoughtful fabrication or it will be too bulky. I'm not lecturing you, just thinking out loud in case I ever am tempted to buy it

  9. I wasn't impressed with the new patterns because I feel that they have all been done before. There wasn't much that was new or original. And most of Vogue's dresses were knits, and since I'm more into sewing wovens than knits, Vogue's patterns were especially disappointing for me.

I actually did not know that Butterick patterns were out. I'm going to head on over there now to check them out. Who knows, maybe I'll fall in love with something!

  10. I don't have that many patterns, just BWOF going back 10 years so that's plenty too. There is little I am planning to buy even at a good sale. No pizazz at all.

  11. Yeah, you're right . . . there's a lot of "been there done that" with so many of the new pattern offerings. But 5523 will be coming home to me during the next Club BMV sale.

  12. 5523 has promise but I don't have pattern storage are it been taken up by my fabric stash. LOL So I'll have look to see if I have something similar and if not wait for a really good sale.

  13. I agree with you Carolyn because I am using my older patterns to make what I want. There were a couple I liked but not enough to go buy because like someone said, we can just morph what we want with what we already have! LOL

  14. I own the RTW version of 5523 (bought at last year's Nordstrom anniversary sale) and I LOVE it! So much so, that I'm scooping up the pattern to make another version for this season. :) I got a ridiculous amount of compliments on it so I highly recommend purchasing it and making a kick arse dress with it!

  15. I was just thinking about posting a comment on Butterick's fall collection. For me, I found more potential with their pattern selection for fall kickoff, than I did with Vogue, McCall's and Simplicity. Perhaps like you I have so many patterns, everywhere in my house, that they are all starting to look like those being offered. If I buy any, and I probalby will, I will wait until the $2.99-$3.99 sale on Club BMV

  16. I think that I am in the same boat as you...because we have Hancock's and JoAnn's here, I have purchased a RIDICULOUS number of patterns on sale for 99 cents. Who can pass up a dollar for a pattern??? But because of that, I have hundreds of patterns that I will never get around to using. In 50 years, it will be MY family selling my patterns on ebay...uncut! complete! I can see it now....

  17. You are right! I am the same as Michelle with the Jo-Ann's patterns for $.99. I have noticed that because of that I have bought very similar patterns and some duplicates by accident.

  18. I just bought 5523 from the last sale. It looks like it will hide my high waist, tummy stuff. Also, looks like it will be comfortable. I guess I just don't have enough patterns yet - ha!

  19. I check your blog regularly and have learned something about my own body type! thank you, now I know why dresses with waistlines always make me look frumpy. And I can see that I should copy your theme of sheath dresses to get some workable nice clothes. Love your sense of style.

  20. I'm starting to feel the same way, too! I just counted the number of patterns I have organized and filed it was over 200 (not including unfiled, magazines, books, and ufo patterns). Hehe.. that's a lot of patterns! :)

  21. Sew on and Sew on posted some pictures about a recent visit to Haberman's Fabrics. There is a sample wool suit with this jacket (5535)and Butterick 4136 skirt shown in the second picture behind the blue casmere cape made from Vogue 8674.
