I'm still sewing winter garments!

Am I the only one that likes to sew in season clothing? I was just wondering because last night when I was trying to catch up on my blog reading, I noticed that several bloggers are saying that they are finishing up their last winter garments and will start sewing spring soon.  Excuse me!  Did I miss something?!  I mean I know the temps have gone up into the 40 degree mark around here lately, but seriously spring?!  There's still snow on the dayum ground!

I just got a bunch of new wools!  My "Pinstripe Follies" collection has been much talked about but not yet sewn.  Won't the temperatures still be cool into the middle of April...when you'll need transistional gear before heading into warmer weather in May?  And hasn't it even been cold, rainy and gloomy on Memorial Day?!

By my figuring, I've got at least another 10 good weeks of winter garment wearing...so I'm still sewing winter gear...at least for the foreseeable future.  How about you are you sewing winter or spring garments?

...more later!

  1. Um. So I guess if I tell you that the high today was, uh, 82....

I think we may have missed our opportunity for Spring Sewing. Good thing I never got started on the Winter Sewing, right?

  2. I'm with you, though I do dream of coming up with a few things that are warm enough to wear in March/April, but somehow (colour-wise?) say spring. By February, I'm so tired of all the fuzzy-woolies in dark colours that I feel that I need some transition pieces. Reality is, I'm still sewing what I planned for winter-wear.

  3. It was 76 degrees here today so it's summer sewing here.

  4. You're not alone. I try to sew ahead of the season...rarely manage to. LOL. I'm still working on a dress coat for winter.

  5. I agree!!! I am not ready to move to Spring sewing yet! We are still in winter!!! :D

  6. I always wonder if they are from way down south, like Australia or New Zealand. Yes, I'm still sewing for winter. I know that winter, proper winter, will still be in South Dakota for at least through the end of February. Even though the temps will be warming, I know I'll need coats and sweaters oh and snow boots through April. That's at least 10 more weeks. Yes I'm still sewing for winter; and will be for several more weeks.

  7. In my ideal world, I would be sewing spring clothing now so they would be ready for spring. But the way I sew I'm always playing catch up, I have no clothes to wear now! all my clothing are rags! and I need clothing NOW! But I can dream can't I!

  8. I am still sewing for winter, it is going to be in the 60's this week, then back to snow next week. I have a sweater knit on my cutting table right now.

  9. I'm still sewing for winter but I shouldn't be. We had 70 degrees here in Oklahoma today. About 20 degrees above normal though.

  10. I feel the way you do about winter sewing. However, because of my locale I seriously know that I have much less than 10 weeks left - maybe 5. As tired as I am of winter (I love spring and summer) I should be ready for spring. But I feel so behind, and actually I have much more fall/winter stash than spring.

  11. I love winter sewing. I find the textures much more varied and interesting than summer sewing. I definitely sew for the season I am in. Here in Vermont, we will have snow on the ground until mid-April, and it will be cold enough to need sweaters long after that. Just the thought of light weight sewing makes me shiver.

  12. My reality is it's not a seasonal thing - it's more of what I get finished and when. I started a few weeks ago working on a shear blouse/jacket. I think I'm more driven by creativity and what strikes me at the time.

I've sen your work and I love it. You are a great inspiration to me. Thanks so much for really taking the time to share. :)

Here's hoping that winter is truly not over.

  13. I'm one of those who has moved on to spring! We are having temperatures in the 60s this week, and while I'm sure that winter isn't quite done, it is generally warm enough for spring clothes (with a sweater) in March. I also like to be a bit ahead of the season, so I have new things to wear when it arrives. But the weather here is generally pretty warm - I know I've been further north in April/May and been shocked how cold it was (one notable trip to Wisconsin in late May found me having to buy warmer clothes!)

  14. I agree transitional pieces are the way to go at the moment. My excuse is that our winter is so short here (and probably some peoples idea of spring) in HK that unless I plan way ahead (like that's gong to happen!) I've missed most of it before I've started.

  15. I'm sewing Spring clothes because spring usually arrives in Los Angeles in late February. The cherry and plum trees have already started to bloom.

But don't get too jealous because we get a thick marine layer of fog at the beach in the late spring and early summer, May gray and June gloom. We'll bundle up for that.

  16. If I could sew as efficiently as you Carolyn, I would keep sewing winter clothing too! My winter wardrobe is a little skimpy, but I just sew too slowly to get there in time. I'll start sewing winter again in August, lol.

  17. I'm sewing spring clothes because I'm dreaming of spring. And so it's snowing in Moscow, I hope that spring will come soon)

  18. I WANT to continue sewing for winter because I scored some great wools on sale, but at the rate I sew, I should probably start sewing for summer!

  19. Reality is what you said, I'm going to need winter clothing until at least mid-May. Right now, though, spring/summer clothing is appealing, so in March I'm probably going to start making some winter type stuff in spring like colors. That usually transitions me well and gets me out of the winter blahs.

  20. Definitely still winter sewing here. We won't be into spring clothing till April way up here near the border. I have a couple of "winter" items lined up but will also sew some seasonless blouses if the plan goes the way I want. What I would do for a 70º day right now!

  21. You're not alone, I'm always sewing in-season.

  22. Well, since baseball's spring training has officially begun, spring can't be far away, no matter how much snow is on the ground. It's about 8 weeks to Opening Day, I think, maybe less!

That said, I sew what I feel like sewing, although I tend to sew "in season". IOW, we are covered in snow, and I am making a dressy sleeveless top for myself, a short-sleeved shirt for DH, and I just got a commission to make a dress for a neighbor for a hospital gala at the end of March.

So maybe I really am desperate for spring without admitting it to myself, although the fancy top for me and the gala dress are suitable for any season as long as the occasion suits. And the shirt for DH is part of a sew-along.

  23. It is 40 degrees here and I am soooooo over winter sewing.
BUT-I start fall sewing in August......go figure.

  24. Carolyn, I think since we live in the northern part of the continent, we are thinking winter a lot longer than our friends further south.
Today, it is -24 Celsius windchill (that's -11 Fahrenheit) and a foot of snow on the ground with snow banks reaching 6 feet and more. Spring sewing just doesn't call to me yet. Now my daughter in Texas is probably seeing daffodils and wearing a sweater for a walk.

  25. Lots of winter left in MI. I'm not a plan-specific person. No SWAPS. I sew for the moment and whatever season it is.

  26. I'm still doing winter...I feel cold in the 50's and so far we have only had one day with those balmy temperatures...

  27. I think I stopped sewing for winter back in November. Here in Florida, I don't really need too many winter clothes. And for the last few weeks, I've been sewing a costume for my son's friend. By the time I'm done with that and the Men's Shirt Sew-Along, I'll be full on into spring/summer here both in temps and in sewing.

  28. I'd say it's a location thing. For those who are still facing weeks of cold/snow/rain/yuck, I'd also guess sometimes it might be a case of "if I SEW spring clothes, it IS spring, darn it!" ?

I'd love to one who sews ahead of the seasons, but it's just not happening. Actually, other than mending, sewing isn't happening at all :-( .

  29. I'm sewing for Spring & Summer! I like to be alittle ahead of the season and it's also great therapy after such a cold winter!

  30. I am still sewing for winter, and wearing my wool pants and jackets, but tomorrow the temperature is supposed to be 69 degrees.... and I am so ready for spring

  31. Girl, I'm with you..., still sewing winter clothing. For three weeks I've been sewing Fashion show garments. But I'm not no where near done with sewing winter clothes.

  32. I was wondering the same thing! I purchased some beautiful winter fabrics and wondered if I should go ahead with my plans for them or wait until this fall. In RTW, I buy for the current season (usually when everything is on sale!), so I guess in my sewing, I'm pretty much the same way. I make (or buy) something with the intention of wearing it right away.

  33. Lol, we fired up the slip n slide last year on memorial day and we were in Ontario!

  34. For me, I could go either way, but it is SO NICE today and we're supposed to get near 60 tomorrow. I normally sew in the moment too but this season I want to have a few things ready because usually what happens is it warms up and I'm not ready. I could go in a store and buy a spring outfit now, so why not have my own ready. I have plenty of winter clothing to take me through the rest of the cold weather.

  35. I'm still working on a coat - I've been in pad stitching purgatory for an aeon. It was supposed to be a late fall/early winter transitional coat, but it looks like now it will be a late winter/early spring piece. So, I'm not sure what camp that puts me in other than very slow sewista. But even if I was faster, I would still probably be sewing for winter.

  36. Yep... I hear ya... winter is still here! Although, at this instant we have nothing but wind, wind, and oh did I say wind! Cold out and very deceiving that's for sure... the sun is out! But yes, winter clothes are still on my list!

  37. I never started sewing for winter and winter is almost gone so I will be sewing for spring. Make a list and stick to it.

  38. I know it's still winter, but since spring is my busy season for once I am going to sew ahead of the season. I have enough winter things and not much in the way of spring. Every year I have the same issue, so ahead it is.

  39. Well...I haven't been sewing much of anything but by my selection of fabric, it's been SPRING :)

  40. I'm still in winter.....although I do admit to having started looking at spring fabrics and planning what to sew.....

  41. I like to sew for the current season. Of late I have been on a crocheting binge, making sweaters that are a great addition to my winter gear. While the getting is good I hope to make a few more before spring is sprung....lol

  42. I am still sewing winter garments. I tend to sew for the current season.

  43. I started sewing a season ahead this year and it's worked out well so far. I always feel like I don't have enough time to wear my projects if I sew for this season.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm not anywhere near ready to give up my wools yet! I've decided that I really do love sewing winter garments instead of summer (spring is somwhere in the middle - haha). My mood isn't ready for spring and neither is my stash.
