The Rachel Skirt

That's what I'm calling Vogue 1247.

I love the version that Adonishing Dressing for Dinner made and it really inspired me to make one of my own.

Here I am wearing my version at work:

Some stats:

Fabric:
Navy tropical wool from Fabric Mart

Notions:
Navy ambiance lining
9" invisible zipper
2 buttons
rayon hem tape

We all know that this skirt only goes up to a size 18 and it's quite short...but I loved the pocket detail!  Especially after Adonishing lengthened hers...it turned my world upside down and I had.to.have.my.own.version of this skirt.

Starting with my TNT skirt I cut new front pieces by laying the pattern's front piece on the fold and widening it.  The same was done for the back pieces.  After the pieces were cut out, I used the pattern instructions to understand how to sew the front pocket pieces but after that it was a simple pencil skirt construction.

I did change up the pattern by adding a lining.  I also remained true to the skirt's original design because I didn't add a back vent or side slits.  I was a little concerned that I might have problems getting on and off the bus but there is enough ease at the hemline that it ended up not being an issue at all.

This should have been a quick sew but I puttered around making it...however, I will make another one.  Here is a pic of the pockets prior to the waistband being added:

I can see those pockets with a buttonhole/button to bring some definition to them...because they fade into the skirt until you put your hands in the pockets.  I did that a couple of times at work and then expressions changed!  *LOL*  The pockets are really kewl and deep enough to hold things if you want.  I was just thrilled to be able to jam my hands into them at various times during the day!  So you will probably see a couple more versions of this skirt this summer, as well as, this fall.  This is a wardrobe builder!!!

If you have a TNT pencil skirt pattern and really like the pocket detail, pick the pattern up and use both together, you will be thrilled that you too can end up with a very wearable skirt with great designer details!

...more later!

  4. Great skirt. This pattern is part of the summer sewing line up. I'm going to make it using a piece of pinstripe denim from the stash. Hopefully, I'll get to it before the end of June.

  5. I didn't even glance at this pattern because the skirt was so microscopic, but you are right it is easy enough to lengthen and keep all the interesting details - yours looks great. I always find buses are the true test of skirt wearing ease!

  6. Oh man - I wanted this pattern too after seeing Adonishing's version and another great version. Unfortuantely, the Joann's I go to didn't have it. I will have to keep trying. Yours is great. I like the button idea as well.

  8. About a second after I left my comment I got an email from McCalls about their Memorial Day sale - so I am about to SHOP for patterns that are available in the USA now! Hooray!

Love your Liberty fabric purchases too, by the way.

  10. That is a super skirt - the pockets really make it. You know, I didn't really notice the pockets in the Vogue photo, all I saw was the blouse and went on because that didn't appeal to me. The skirt is definitely a winner, though and I'd better look closer next time!

  16. I never wear skirts because I'm a little "fluffy." But seeing how fabulous you look in that skirt is making me think I can wear it too. Thanks, Carolyn, for always inspiring me to think outside the box I have put myself in.

  19. The skirt looks awesome!!! I looked at the same pattern, but decided not to purchase because of the skirt length. I will be revisting this pattern in the upcoming Vogue pattern sale.

  22. Oh I just bought that pattern! I really only bought it for the top, because I wanted something as soft and easy as a teeshirt, but more blouse-like. I didn't realize the skirt had pockets until I was cutting out the pattern! I'm definitely going to make it-possibly with self-fabric loops and covered buttons. I find I'm really leaning toward skirts and dresses for summer, I just don't like shorts as much.

BTW-I simply have to thank you, again, for just being here. I've finally got my sewing mojo back, and I've worn something I've made for myself for two days in a row now!
