Diary Bits on the first day of Summer

Tonight I came home and this was waiting for me...

...yes, it's the first issue where "our" friend Robin Denning is the new Editor of Vogue Pattern Magazine.  If you've been under a rock and don't know the story, here is her last blog post discussing how this amazing opportunity came to be. So of course, I sat down to peruse this edition and what really caught my eye was The Creative Expression article.

August/September 2012 Issue

Now y'all know I'm all about editing and interpreting a pattern to get the look that I want and this article really celebrates that.  One of the garments highlighted in this article is Vogue 8805.  You know Vogue 8805, the dress that I want to make based upon the Preen designer original. The same dress that I've been having the darndest time finding the orange ponte knit for the bottom of the dress. Can we just refer to yesterday's post here? *sigh*

Anyway one of the editorial licenses they took with the dress was to add inseam pockets on the front of it.  I'd been thinking of doing the same and now I don't have to work it out myself because VPM has provided instructions...instructions that I plan on following!

But I have another dilemma...I have three shades of orange...

tangerine ponte, mango ponte, golden orange poly crepe
and these look better in the picture than IRL

...the first two don't work for me and the one that does is a totally different fabric (a poly crepe) instead of a ponte knit.  So I have to figure out if I can make the two different fabrics work or keep looking for another orange knit.  Or horrors of horrors give this project up...something I'm really not ready to do.

The last thing that's on my mind is this dress...

I found it in this month's Lucky magazine in one of the editorial articles.  This silhouette has been playing around the edges of my creative brain for a couple of months now...way before I saw this photo. It's not a silhouette that I've worn as a fuller figured woman but I want to see if I can make it work now...and that is my next "outside the box, can I make it work" moment.  There are two patterns that I'm thinking about for this challenge...

...but mostly I'm concerned that I'm gonna look like a hippo with a tutu...twirling around taking pictures and not realizing how poorly I look.  So to calm my fears or confirm them, I'm going to do something I nevah do...I'm going to make a muslin.  Yes, you heard it here...I'm going to sew a muslin.  I have to otherwise I won't know if this look will or will not work for me.  And I gotta know if it works so that I can get these ideas that are swirling around in my head out of it.

I guess you should stay tuned because it's about to get real interesting around here...*LOL*...and as always more later!

  1. Hippo with a tutu!!!! I am laughing so hard because that is exactly why I'm not trying the shirtwaist dress challenge that's going on now. With a thick waist and full tummy, there just are some styles that I'm afraid to try.

But I think you could make the McCall's pattern work for you. You are my sewing hero so if you do it, I will try it, too!

Carolyn, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the inspiration you provide to all of us here in sewing blogland!!

  2. I think you should try it. This February I went shopping and decided to try on a pencil skirt. I have never had a pencil skirt on. I always figured that would be a huge no no for my figure but decided to do it anyway. And what to my amazement did I discover? That I look really good in a pencil skirt. You only live once so go for it.

  4. Carolyn - go for it!! You never know! And if anyone can make it work, YOU can -- and once you do, you'll have a whole new TNT to work with!

  5. I want to thank you for always taking the time to post both what you're thinking about and then the process you follow to produce your own version of what inspires you.

Adaptation rather than duplication is definitely the answer to the question of how to make the "looks" work on our individual bodies. Thanks for inspiring a "whole lot" of us who follow you every day!

  6. Go for it! I think you'll look super cute! I love the inspiration dress!

  7. Hmmm - on the orange dress, since the orange is at the bottom (I am remembering correctly, right?) I think it should be the same fabric, or at least a similar weight.

On the dropped waist gathered dress - I'm not much help. I often dance around like a hippo in a tuto thinking I look fabulous. Can't wait to see what you work out. Or for that issue of Vogue Patterns. g

  8. I love the See and Sew pattern - I've made it twice (once was a wadder, but not the pattern's fault at all) and have it ready for another round when I can find my lining fabric. (Don't make that stupid tie belt, though, what were they thinking?) But, I will honestly admit, we share very little in body type. I would think - based on your shape - that the S&S would work better than the dropped waist? Looking forward to your muslins, though. And my Vogue mag.

  9. I wonder if any of Robin's articles will show up in the "Sew Today" magazine because it often mirrors the Vogue magazine - will have to look out for it.

  10. I think the key is the dress length. The See and Sew pattern looks terrific (I might have to make it!), but in that shorter length, it might just give the tutu effect.

  11. I too like the way you "announce" your next experiments! So fun to look forward to the results. Thanks for helping me get my sewing mojo back!

  12. I say try it. Go longer than you normally wear your skirts, to balance things out.

  13. A muslin? I guess if hell freezes over it would be ok in this heat. LOL

I can't wait to see how these both shape up.

  14. Say what! You're making a muslin :). It's not that bad really. Enjoy the process. It will not take as long as you think.

  16. i think the dress would look great on you if you used a drapey soft fabric. It will be a different silhouette for you, so give yourself sometime to get used to it.

    FWIW-I love hippos in tutus.

  17. Could you not just go and try on a RTW in that style and save some time and fabric?
The 8805 - I would make all the fabrics the same so they play together nicely.

  18. Actually I think the first issues under Robin may be Jan 2013. Magazines have about 5 month lead time. She may be on the masthead in the current issue but all of that content probably went to press before she joined.

  20. Oh my you're too funny! I agree totally with the muslin! You don't want to ruin your nice fabric with a "wadder"! I have one of these darn things on Ms. Thing (my dressform) right now! I'm so pissed, I've left it there to remind me I need to do a muslin first if I'm not sure!

...by the way, Andrea from Satin Bird Designs just posted some orange ponte knit she purchased from a website I never heard of. Here's the link to her post...http://satinbirddesigns.blogspot.com/2012/06/fabric-delivery.html. Good luck to you! Waiting to see your results!
