I want to try this...

I got home last night and my new issue of Threads (October/November 2013) was waiting for me.

The article that intrigued me was called, "Draft New Necklines for Basic Patterns."

I've wanted some new basic colored sheath dresses for fall.  You know in navy blue, red, and orange...all from fabrics in the collection.  However, I didn't want to make a whole bunch of lined sheath dresses using my TNT dress pattern.  I'd been eyeing some sheath dresses from RTW with different necklines and I really didn't want to purchase a whole lot of patterns to get these changes.  This article solves my challenges.

So through the fall and winter I will be adding a couple of new sheath dresses to my wardrobe and I'm using the article in Threads to get my new necklines. I'm kinda thrilled about that!

The other article that caught my eye was the one that's featured on the cover, "Gorgeous Embellished Fabrics."  I've been drooling over this Valentino dress from the Fall 2013 collection that's been featured in all of the September fashion magazines.

It's a little elaborate for my everyday life.  However, I keep thinking that I can find a lace somewhere in the garment district or at Mood that will work with my lifestyle and allow me to make my version of this dress.  Hopefully, I will get to this before the season changes...we'll see!

Last night I saw the movie, "The Butler".  I really liked the movie. Although I don't know how I missed the fact that it was going to have such a historical perspective...which was emotional for me since I was a little girl in the 60s. Anyway, if you get a chance, go see it.

I follow the blog, Couture Allure Vintage Fashion Blog, and she did a blog post on the fashion in the movie.  The costume designer, Ruth Carter, did an interview and it's included in the post.  It's pretty interesting, so check it out.

I got this in the mail yesterday also. Isn't it adorable?

Thanks Rachelle!

I don't know if I'm sewing today.  It's been a busy week and I'm a little tired. I really feel like just lazing around, watching TV, surfing the internet and doing nuthin'!

...as always more later!

  1. A friend and I went to see the movie "The Butler", yesterday afternoon. The period clothing/costuming in the movie as you know covered quite a lot of different fashions! For me seeing some of those from the '60s and '70s brought back fond and warm memories of close relatives alive back then.

  3. I'm planning on trying the "scrap lace" embellishment technique from this issue. It's exactly what I've been looking for to create a yoke for a dress with a beautiful wavy striped sateen! And, my fabric diet is going very well! I've hit the "20 yards gone" mark, so I treated myself to a couple new yards yesterday!

  4. I love your blog and I visit regularly, even though I've given up on the idea of resuming sewing (I used to sew back in the early 1970's but these days I have too much else on my plate and I've no patience anymore!) I look forward to seeing the dresses you plan to make with the new necklines. I have read a great deal of good things about "The Butler". I think every American should see it but, unfortunately, those who most need to see this movie won't! That being said, it's got to be an Oscar contender for sure. Random thought - I love the embellished look but that picture of the Valentino dress on the model -- she looks like a concentration camp survivor. Awful. That girl has eating disorders, I've no doubt about that at all! Looking at that photo makes me a little sick, but you know, some young impressionables may visit you too and think that they've got get that "thin" (skeletal, actually) in order to "look good." Please don't take this as a criticism, but do you think maybe you could find a different photo of the dress and nix the one with the walking dead model? Okay, end of rant. Sorry. I just had to speak up about it.

  6. I too was inspired by the neckline article. I do plan on making some changes to my dress pattern as well. I also want to make a sheath dress pattern - I hope to start this weekend - fitting will be tough.

I can't wait to see your version of the lace dress. It will be stunning - as always. g

  8. Can Rachelle do a tutorial on how she made the card? It is so cute. And it looks like she stitched in on her machine. I would love to learn more about how she does these.

  11. I saw The Butler twice. After seeing it, I had to take my GDs. Although it is losely based on the real butler, Eugene Allen, the historical journey was excellent. I laughed and cried! I loved that his wife Gloria used sewing to help her get off alcohol!!! Those outfits she made for her self and her husband were a hoot!!!

BTW the letter I wrote to Threads about the Ebony Fashion Show is published in this issue on page 10! It was exciting to see my name in print!!!!
