Loved the linen blog as I am making linen skirts for casual wear. You answered a lot of questions. I considered calling my 84 yr old mom, who has sewed her whole life but I am embarrassed to admit I should have listened better when she wanted to teach me about sewing! Keep blogging and I love the way you have real people model your clothes. It is so hard to imagine what something looks like from a pattern drawing. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, opinions and life. I appreciate it. sherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05213739085879489479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20705637.post-44256583403057722022012-09-25T16:16:25.549-04:002012-09-25T16:16:25.549-04:00I get the thought behind this post and I really ap...I get the thought behind this post and I really appreciate it. I doubt that you do bother anyone and, as others have said, they don't have to join in the joys (including fabric) that you share. I love fabric, patterns, and sewing tools. I like to look at fabric (my own and online), feel it, buy it, and sometimes even sew it. I buy a lot, but my purchases don't destroy the family budget. My DH says I'm an addict. I don't disagree, but it's an inexpensive addiction compared to many others. You know, I think you have the record for number of comments to one post. Most of us seem to be concerned about the amount of fabric and patterns that we buy. I believe it's part of the passion of sewing!Rosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08501837896957263739noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20705637.post-46189521157408024542009-04-04T13:17:00.000-04:002009-04-04T13:17:00.000-04:00Nope. Your fabric photos are never offered up with a haughty "look what *I* can afford; they are shared with people who will appreciate and be inspired by them, and recognize that you found some bargains. Carolyn, I feel bad that you've focused on someone elses jealousies.
You're (and in turn, those of us who read your wonderful blog) giving all this attention to this person and her negativity. I say don't do it! Why do you care what she thinks about YOUR fabric purchases?
Don't like reading about it? Don't visit the site.
I'm not being insensitive about the state of the economy, but, lets face it, fortunately, there are people, like you, Carolyn, who are still working, and can afford to purchase the things that are deemed 'wants' rather than necessities.
You're about fifty years old, right? So am I. I REFUSE (at this age)to be made to feel bad about the 'wants' that I purchase, I try to be careful about what I buy, and I am responsible for the bills I run up, NOT some anonymous person typing away on a keypad, spewing crap about what she sees or reads on a monitor.
Life is waaaaaaay too short. Buying fabric and sewing gives you pleasure, and you're not hurting anyone. Enjoy yourself. I can't wait to see what the next fabulous fabric finds yield, and what beautiful pieces result from your very talented and capable sewing hands. God Bless. :-)Sewsynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20705637.post-88475053099398846282009-04-04T10:03:00.000-04:002009-04-04T10:03:00.000-04:00I don't think sewing really has gotten out of hand...I don't think sewing really has gotten out of hand expense wise...I know I can still dash off a pair of capris or a cute top for my daughter and spend less than 10$ and that makes me very happy. In that time, we have gone from being fairly well-off to absolutely dirt broke, behind on the mortgage and worrying about keeping the electricity on and literally counting the coins in the sofa for gas money. This is the ONE place I can come to and find normalcy in my crazy life that I call normal now. I am so happy that you have a job, that you can still buy 54 yards of fabric, that there is some semblance of stability in your life. It's almost like a touchstone --- your life is normal so there is hope that ours will return that way soon. Don't be so worried ... you are so respected for what you do and the inspiration you share with us. You ENRICH our lives.sewjunenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20705637.post-67983937836476153202009-04-04T00:04:00.000-04:002009-04-04T00:04:00.000-04:00Caroline, please share....that way I don't feel so...Caroline, please share....that way I don't feel so guilty about the dollars I spend on fabric and other sewing notions. In summarizing all our expenses for taxes, I find that I spent about $2,000 last year on sewing purchases! That's up from the year before when my total was about $1,000. I agree that while in total this seems expensive (at least on my budget w/ three teenage boys still home eating!) it's a fraction of what therapy would cost. While I have don't have your talent, expertise, or creativity, I enjoy creating something that has a practical value that won't disappear a few minutes after being put on the table. Sewing has kept me grounded lately. That along with a number of sewing and quilting blogs including yours that provide inspiration, laughter, and a feeling of community. Thanks for always sharing whether it be fabric purchases, techniques, or pictures of that sweet, sweet grandbaby.

Thanks Caroline!

Regards,

TeresaTeresa aka MarieSewshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10633130424915637147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20705637.post-45650790028498367202009-04-03T22:54:00.000-04:002009-04-03T22:54:00.000-04:00Part of the joy of sewing is the purchase of fabri...Part of the joy of sewing is the purchase of fabric - Enjoy it and keep sharing the joy with us!Suehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01023115170916061414noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20705637.post-62944502641616866982009-04-03T20:53:00.000-04:002009-04-03T20:53:00.000-04:00I like so many others that have left comments don'...I like so many others that have left comments don't come because you are rubbing anyone's faces in the fact that you have made purchases. I come because I love fabric! And you have conveinent wonderful places to go to make these purchases. And I really do enjoy what you have to say... if I didn't and it offended me... I wouldn't come back! And I really don't think that you are offending anyone. Would you stop buying food and maybe eating on public transportation because someone else there maybe not have any food? Hopefully if we knew of a situation like this we would share or what have you. But all we can do is the best we know how. Sure there are a lot of people who don't really care at all, and have a don't give a care attitude. But, that is also up to them.
Enjoy your hobby, time sewing and life in general. I lost my job in September and am still looking. It doesn't bother me that you talk about buying fabric and patterns. I love the same stuff you do. Yes, I have to look at my purchases differently now. But you don't and i love to live vicariously. I have a big enough stash that I could sew for more than 2 years and not buy any fabric. That is what is getting me thru this rough spot. I just buy patterns when they are on sale and I buy notions to finish a garment made from my stash. When I get a job, I will be back to buying whatever and enjoying it. You can't waste time going thru life envying what others have. I would rather spend that energy thinking of a new outfit.

So no, you didn't offend me. And you shouldn't worry about this. Go for it and keep sharing. So why am I here? Because you are INSPIRING. Even if you are talking about clothes that will never suit me, it still inspires me to go look for my own tnt. The way you use fabrics and draw inspiration from tv/high fashion is pure genius. I am not an artist, I am more of a technician, but I am learning possibilities from you.
