Ebay is a very, very evil place

and could possibly get me fired! *LOL*

Okay so Myra innocently sent me off to the evil land of bidding and "buy nows" to look for a 50's shirtwaist dress pattern. Ebay novice and innocent that I am, I search Ebay for the item number that she provided...at work...people, what was I thinking! Was I trying to lose my paying gig?! The source of my fabric enhancement...'cause I was on that danged site for almost two hours! Two hours!!!! Thank God I started when everyone headed out to lunch because that place is like quicksand it just snares you in and then starts to suffocate you with the goods.

So do I find 50's shirtwaist dresses...ummm can we say that I "Buy Now" bought two patterns and bid on two more...What the h*ll do I need four plus size 50's shirtwaist dress patterns for?! But that's what I think now, earlier today was a different story...when the seducing evil that is Ebay invaded my mind and showed me the possibilities of what's out there...at that time I was thinking, ooohhhh good vintage pattern instructions, uncut factory folded pattern pieces, a detail from this pattern could be added to my final garment, look at how the pleats fall on that pattern...do you see where I'm going here?!

I caught it...Ebay fever!!!!

So all evening I have been checking "My Ebay" to make sure that someone hasn't undercut me and outbid me on my two patterns because now....I've just got to have them!

And that my dear friends is why Ebay is EVIL!

p.s. I will let you know if I win them and show you pictures of the "Buy Now" patterns when they arrive! I can see the shirtwaist dress now and it's just a matter of time and the post office delivery system on it getting made...but Ebay really is evil!!!! *LOL*

  1. So would now not be the time to introduce you to Craig's List?
Seriously, I hope you enjoy your new "wins", I'm looking forward to seeing your version of a shirt dress.
My work computer won't allow me to shop Ebay. Propably for the best...

  4. I''m excited to see your shirtdress. What fabric are you thinking about? Remember that white-on-white seersucker that you bought and blogged about a while back? I think it was you, anyway. You should use that.

  5. eBay is my main source of vintage patterns, vintage sewing books, buttons, etc...Once you start, you just can't stop!! I've thought about a 12 step program, but it would really infringe on my sewing time, so I dismissed that idea!

  6. Uh oh. Life as you knew is now over. LOL! Good luck on the auctions. I hope you win what you're after but without getting sucked into the bidding frenzy. Set your limit and WALK AWAY. LOL!

  7. Auctions of any kind are highly addictive to me. We used to go to livestock auctions and it was the same thing; the only way I could deal with it reasonably was to set a dollar limit in terms of what we wanted.

  8. Hey, Carolyn, I saw and offered the suggestion. I know what you mean, because I live in the country, there is nowhere to shop except ebay and internet sometimes. And of course, Walmart 20 miles away. I hope you did not get into any trouble at work. Did you like the suggestion, though?

  9. When I saw your question about the pattern, I was going to suggest Ebay, but due to the fact that I have led many people astray, I kept it to myself. All I can say is, stay away from the fabric auctions. Otherwise, you'll be like me. Obsessed. Oh, did I tell you they have a couple of sellers with a great assortment of fold over elastic? Oh and definitely do not look at the vintage fabric (it's in the collectibles section). Oh I'm awful. Forget what I said!

  10. Carolyn. You are soooo right about ebay. Karent on SG put that evil ebay suggestion into my head, and I trotted off over there to look for accessories for my old Singer. Well. I'm HOOKED. So, I know what you mean. I avoided ebay for years for just this reason. Oh well, finally bit the dust....

  11. Dear Carolyn,
I know exactly what you mean! I was bored one day and snuck on over...I picked up 12 issues of BWOF circa 1991 for the ridiculous price of $3.49!!! My husband said "Congratulations, I see it's been a busy day at work" when I got home...HeHeHe! Can't wait to see what you bought! Mary

  12. I love e-bay, too. But I have to set my pre-determined limit and stick to it. In fact, I have a couple of bids in now--none are vintage shirtwaists, though.

  13. I hear ya! Somehow, the bidding process on Ebay got me all excited, and made me buy a ratty old cardboard box containing six pounds of vintage buttons.

I spent two days washing and sorting the filthy little things. I won't lie - I loved it. But still, six pounds of buttons!!

  14. I can't believe you are just discovering Ebay. Do you have any idea of what you've been missing all these years?!?

It's a whole different world for sewing addicts, and no, it is not evil(what does 'evil' mean, btw?) just make sure you put your household money aside first thing each month! LOL....

I have my own sewing related speciality purchases on Ebay and it is fun!
If there is a sewing item you need, first you check Ebay, then the other sources. The payment is what I find annoying....having to go do the bank transfer thingy...weekly...yes, addiction but not evil.

  15. Oh my! I get a great majority of my patterns and vintage accessories through eBay! It can't be all evil, can it?

  16. I love Ebay too, and agree that it is a total time-sucker! I've learned that I can't "just check Ebay real quick".

  18. I am uncomfortably close to assembling The Compleat Kollection of Stretch and Sew patterns - 90% of which are ebay acquisitions. And in the last week, I've "won" 5 pairs of shoes for myself and DD (those d@#ned discontinued Kenneth Coles....), one pair for DH *AND* I was able to track down my sister's favorite shoes (obscure brand, discontinued style), brand new and in her size. She owes me big time. I'm staying away from ebay for a while, though. My work there is done....as is my fun money. ;-)

  19. Hey welcome to he**! I've been buying on ebay for almost 10 years. I'll tell you how sick I am...I actually buy patterns that I had back in my teenage years. Why, you ask? Well, why not? Not only vintage, but pretty much any pattern is for sale. Don't get me started on the shoes, books, etc. I have bought. Actually, books are a great buy. Good Luck!!

  20. Welcome to Ebay. I too cannot believe you went this long without answering the siren's call. I've purchased tons of vintage patterns, along with jewelry, bags, a zillion pair of shoes, fabric, books. You are a goner now....welcome to the club.

Why do you need 4 shirtwaist patterns...for the same reason I buy every cute jacket pattern released (along with every other type of pattern) ;o)

  21. It starts off sooooo innocent and then- true - you are hooked. But don't worry , the obsession dies down....and there is life after ebay :)

  22. You are so right but I love that place. I just recently found your blog and tracked down a vogue designer Tomotso pattern that was in your tnts but has not yet arrived. My vintage power sewing book arrived today today along with a oop burda jacket that someone made for her aunt on PR. I am so hooked. I am hunting your oop burda twin set pattern but ebay has not coughed it up yet.Hehehe mssewcrazy

  24. I have been buying vintage patterns on ebay for a few years, and occasionally finding an unused gem at Value Village. My new favorite search are vintage wrap dresses, but I too was ensnared by the classically elegant shirtwaist :)
