However, I've thought about sewing and worked on "The Pantsuit from Hell!" I am waivering...I may not finish this jacket. Every time I start something on the jacket, I am unhappy with the result. Then I have to lay it down and walk away from it...so it's taking forever to finish. I am just not happy with the project so far...*sigh*
Of course, it's also been two weekends since I've actually completed something and I'm antsy and fabric shopping. Not huge amounts but it got me to thinking...do you count lining fabric in your fabric totals? See my last two fabric purchases have consisted primarily of lining fabric for certain projects...some cotton batiste to go under an embroidered cotton fabric...and some china silk because it was a great price. But do I count them in my monthly total or is lining a notion?
So I'm coming to the court of public opinion and asking you. Is lining part of the fabric collection or the notion collection? I mean I purchase lining in large amounts - 5 yards is usually the minimum amount - I mostly try to purchase 10 or more yards at a time. And every garment doesn't get a lining but so many of them do...that I am just wondering... Notion or fabric? And do you count lining as part of your fabric collection?

Thanks for all of the wonderful wishes on baby Daniel's birth! He is such a quiet little thing, smiling in his sleep, quietly whimpering when he wants a bottle or needs his diaper changed. I am sure all of this will change...but he is a joy to hold and snuggle now! So one last Daniel picture.
He will make infrequent showings here on my blog - it is a sewing blog after all! And no, I will not be making any items for him. His mother received quite a haul at the baby shower including several knitted and crocheted items, therefore, it will be quite some time before he needs something handmade from his grandma!

Sadly, I don't. Lining is usually an afterthought. That baby is so adorable that he's making my ovaries ache. You can add a picture of Baby Daniel at the end of every post!

ReplyDeleteI've given up a lot of sewing time because of my grandsons. Funny thing--I don't mind a bit. Enjoy the little one while you can. These are moments you'll never get back.
I don't count it as fabric, don't count it as anything actually, just need it LOL. That baby Daniel is too adorable for words...
ReplyDeleteI would also consider lining a notion not actual fabric. Your Grandson is so precious, treasure every moment because time really does fly, my Grandson is 6 today and I can't believe it's been 6 years already.

Here is a thought for making stuff for Daniel - decorate some cloth diapers to use for burp cloths. I just did this as a baptism gift for a 2 1/2 month old. I knew she didn't "need" anything so I got her mom to hand over some of the cloth diapers to "decorate." They were a HUGE hit...I'll be decorating the rest of the plain ones for her now! :) Baby has to look good even when she is spitting up...same goes for Daniel!
Lining should be counted as a NOTION (of course my reasoning is selfish...I don't wish to count it as a fabric purchase.)

I never count my linings. They live in a separate section of my sewing room, far removed from the fabrics. Looks like we all agree about lining being a notion! As for the jacket, perhaps you could use Cidell's 'magic closet' technique?

ReplyDeleteI think it is a question of intent. I think I remember something about conserving funds, etc., as part of your motivation. The only compromise to the spirit of your goal would seem to be buying lining to complete a current project vs. buying lining to stash. Just my thought. Linda

ReplyDeleteI don't count lining as fabric. I keep all my linings in one banker's box, so it's manageable. Even if it's silk and designated as a lining, it doesn't count.
Lining most definitely does NOT count.

ReplyDeleteAs for the lining, it is what I consider "utilitarian". Thats up there with basic thread colors and interfacings. You have to have this stuff so you might as well buy it when you see it at a good price. I am all for the bulk buy on this.

Think about lining this way; would you wear it on the outside of say, a jacket or pant? I think not! Lining is a notion! At least for me it is. LoL... and besides lining is nice... just not as nice as fabric!

Interesting post. Over the weekend I purchased 5 yds of lining. I was telling a friend about the lovely fabrics I purchased, but I didn't include the 5 yards of lining. With that said I would consider it a notion.
