Burda Skirt - Part 3

....or how to turn a simple skirt into a major production! *LOL*

This afternoon Marji sent me another drawing to emphasize her lining point....and she got me thinking...and since I have the fashion fabric cut out, I decided to baste it up and check the fit...here's the unlined front (without the waistband):

and here's the unlined back (again sans waistband):

This is why I used my TNT pattern for this skirt...I have 4 small darts across the back to gently emphasize my behind.  I know this works well for me and I'm liking how it looks.  I even like how the drape looks in the front.

After basting this together and seeing the pics, I've now got another idea for how to make this skirt my own! *LOL*  This version will be made up as Burda suggests...but I AM making this again.  I will use my regular skirt back and add an invisible zipper.  For the front I will pin the drape and baste it down.  Then I will add my regular waistband so that I can unzip and step into the skirt.

The reason for the change is because I like the drape on the front of the skirt, it's different from your normal pencil skirt.  However, I'm not sure that I like the way the Burda skirt closes especially on me...and since I NEVER tuck anything in you won't see the button finish at all.  I think the revised version will work better for me.  So this will be the last update...the next post on the skirt will show you the finished skirt(s).

I have to admit that this has been an interesting adventure.  I have a better idea of what I'll face making the Burdastyle dresses...and I really think I'm going to make at least one of the three...now that I can face the tracing out!

...and as always, more later!

  1. Carolyn, it's looking good! I can see why you used your TNT for the back - it fits beautifully. You have a very good idea about keeping the drape in place and getting in and out of the skirt using a zipper. I

  2. I think it's going to look great when it's done. I really like the idea of the back zip. I don't generally do wrap skirts, and the last
one I did I used the "tack it down and add a zipper" approach and it worked much better for me.

  3. This skirt is obviously contagious - I took a night off from making gifts last night and cut out and got it pretty much together. I wish I had your comfort level with the Big 4, but that's where I am with BWOF - I know what my size is, I know the standard changes I have to make. And after getting about 2/3 of the way there before stopping for the night, I decided that if I made it again, I would put either a side zip or a back zip into it and tack that drape down rather than doing it their way.

Looking forward to seeing your finished skirt.

  4. I love how you are methodically making this your own!
Thanks for so transparently sharing the process!

It will be a beautiful skirt! And bless friends like Marji!

  7. That drape makes the skirt look so slimming on you, and using your TNT for the back is a great idea. I can't wait to see the finished product, by the time you've finished writing these very detailed posts it will be well before this issue lobs in my mailbox (in about 3 months sadly!)

  8. This skirt is looking fantastic. I am going to try it too. Who knew that drape would be so flattering?

  9. This skirt makes you look so absolutely svelte that I'm thinking you should rethink the never-tuck-in thing. ;-) It's been fun watching your process and progress.

  10. I love it! I didn't like this skirt when I first got my issue, but yours is fabulous. I'm going to have to make this one... I can't wait to see the finished product.

  13. I love it!! Now I need to ask a embarrassingly simple question. Burda sizes....did you go with your exact measurements? I am relatively new to sewing and have found that if I use a pattern back and my measurements, I am drowning in the finished product. I ususually search for the finished measurements, which work better for me. I was just wondering if you found the Burda measurement/size chart accurate or if you made adjustments? Thanks in advance - absolutely LOVE reading your blog. :-)

  14. Looking good! I'm so glad you made this skirt. I don't have any plans to make it but I'm plus size and there have been other skirts I've liked in BWOF but they weren't my size. I might use your technique and see if I can "make it work." Thank you Carolyn.

  17. I think this skirt is looking really good. I agree with Karin, I wasn't too interested in this skirt at first but now I've seen your version I might just add it to my never ending 'must sew' list.

  18. Geesh- you guys have me really thinking about making it up in a light tweedy wool now! I think the muslin looks pretty good, and I agree that I would modify it with a size zip, seems like it would be easier to wear.

  19. That's it. I'm tracking this issue down...for this skirt. The back looks good, but the front is fabulous!

  22. Contagious is right! I made it in to work late today because I needed to find my tracing marker and paper. I'm tracing this skirt out for lunch!

  23. That's looking really good.

Hmmm...good idea about the zipper. Since mine is still in the stack waiting to be sewn, it's not too late to add one to the side seams.

I was thinking that the whole drape with the buttons thing would work for my (hopefully) decreasing size, just by moving the buttons from time to time (putting a hook on the inside).

    Hmmm....

  24. Found the issue on eBay last night. Hopefully it will be in the mailbox before long. Bonus--no shipping. Carolyn, you have solved many issues about the skirt. I, too will use my TNT along with the pattern, will save many hours of frustration. You are the best!!! Everyone needs a break - your blogs are tutorials.
