Seriously?

Sometimes I wonder why I sweat the little things like this:

When someone else wears a designer dress and this is showing:

Seriously, didn't anyone check her before she left the limo?  Or is the dress too dayum tight?

All I know is that I'm not sweating the small stuff because seriously, you will never see my millimeter offset but you can see that zipper from a mile away!

...more later!

  1. That is funny!!! I do too. I only noticed what you were talking about after I looked veryyyy carefully. Aren't we perfectionist? The reality, no one else will notice. However, if you are like me, I will point out my mistakes: my bad!!!

  2. No one else will notice. Not even me!

  3. Yeah, don't sweat the small stuff....but like you it would annoy me too Lol. But I also don't think I would have the heart to fix it so would live with being a little irritated when I saw it - but forget once I had it on Lol.

I wonder if that designer dress is supposed to have an exposed zipper? It doesn't look 'right' to me either, but maybe it was meant to be that way? Hmm, who knows?!

  4. Love the dress by the way.....I always admire how well you know just what suits you and how to work an idea into a wearable garment :-)

  5. Whoa! Maybe it was meant to be one of those exposed, metal zippers?

I wouldn't worry about the milli-meter either. No one will notice. Everyone will be ooohing and aaahing over the gorgeous fabric and lovely lines, and of course, most of the attention should be on your face not your back anyway!

  6. I think I try to make my sewing as perfect as possible to avoid criticism and that whole 'happy hands at home' syndrome, but I also suspect that people who don't sew either never notice, or they don't know any better.

I'd like to say don't worry about the smallest imperfections, but that would be hypocritical of me!

  7. It looks like the zipper pull doesn't even match. It gives that gown a tacky look, nasty.

Your dress will be stunning, and while it would bother me too, just enjoy the evening in your beautiful new dress.

  8. Don't worry about it! If they're that close to notice the tiny, tiny, itsy, bitsy mismatch, *they're too close*!

  9. I don't see anything wrong in either picture. I see a beautiful dress in both.

  10. I think that's one of those exposed zipper design elements. Frankly, I've always thought those looked like either the dress was too tight or the designer ran out of time and said, "screw it."

Regards the small stuff, honestly - only those of us who sew and read your blog religiously would have noticed it, and even then, probably not without prodding!

    Your dress is just gorgeous.

  11. I have yet to sew a zipper in completely straight. I was complaining about it to my mom and she laughed and told me to go home and look at all the store-bought clothes in my closet and see how many imperfections they have. She was totally right. Someday I'll sew the perfect zipper, but until then, I'm going to relax and just enjoy making my own clothes.

  12. You know RTW sometimes has an offset too and no one bats an eye, though it annoys me too when I am off on a zip insertion. Speaking of which, I am willing to accept seeing a zipper, even on a gown, because they are a fact of life. But the zip on the celebrity gown looked dark when the gown is pale gold. The designer should have matched the zipper if it was to be exposed.

  13. OK..I'll even go with the thought that it might be a 'design element' - but why would someone put a 'design element' into a place where, if the wearer is standing normally and naturally, it's in the ARMPIT????? Hunh? If I were going to put in an exposed zipper, I'd either put it on the front - either at the center or off-set, or center back and for a dress that fancy, I'd get one of those RIRI rhinestone ones and put a big rhinestone ring as a pull. Putting a zip like that in that particular spot almost guarantees that the person wearing it either has to spend the entire evening with their arm posed like that or they are going to end up with a whole lot of wear and tear on the inside of their arm.
So me, I think it was sort of an afterthought.

  14. You would think she would have at least posed with her other hand on her hip facing the camera from her other side!

  15. If you look lower down, the end of the zipper is hanging out as well under the little drapey bit. I know exposed zippers are in and I like the look in some things, but if that's what they were going for it looks all wrong on that particular dress. It's all 40's glam and then, punch to the eyeball in the form of a zipper!

Meanwhile I can't wait to see the results of this blue dress! I love it so far!

  16. I'm going to go against the grain here and say I love the exposed metal zipper look, even in formal wear, but it's an aesthetic choice. Your zipper was inserted beautifully and I admire your perfectionism:)

  17. I agree about not sweating the small stuff. I cut out a blouse with a bib insert the other day. When I put left and right together, I saw that the print didn't match. So I VERY carefully re-cut (fortunately had enough fabric. The print has puttees and doves on it and the print now matches up beautifully, but the damn babies are UPSIDE DOWN! And i don't have enought fabric to re-cut. My girlfriend said "Use it anyway; nobody but us would notice." But........

  18. You are so funny. But unfortunately you are right, there is some perceived stigma when we 'make it ourselves'. In an effort to avoid that we (people who make out own) tend to do everything we can to achieve perfect.

Truthfully nobody will notice that the piping is a milimeter off - but you know. Looks great by the way. g

  19. maybe she forgot that they told her not to raise her arms, ha! The small stuff seems to be what always gets me, seems I look at it and go I can do better, but then I start in a circle and spend too much time on one thing, especially when I'm trying something new.

  20. Yeah, i'd go with those who think it might have been a design element as it is so apparent. But not a very "pretty" design element. Might have worked with something more edgy but not when the rest of the gown is going for elegant.

This is why I'm not a high fashion guru!

  21. I believe it's because we lay our heart and soul in our projects. Add to that a healthy bit of perfectionism, et voila, we see the tiniest flaws in our work and won't rest until we get rid of them. Or let them be and keep thinking about it ;-)
And indeed, noone else will notice them. We are just sooo close to our own work, literally and as a matter of speaking.
I once looked at the shop-window of a famous designer and was looking for any flaws in the clothes that were displayed. And guess what? I found them. The sort of imperfections that I would never allow my selfmade clothes to have. I think if the designer himself had seen this, he wouldn't be too pleased. But he just wasn't 'close enough'......(am I making any sense here...?)

  22. It's so hard to balance wanting to do a good job with paralyzing perfectionism! Don't worry, I had to stare at your zipper to find what was "wrong"!

  23. Your post reminds me of a dress I made for my Mom. After she tried it on - it fit her perfectly - she tried to fold it nicely and put it in a box. But my mom has one high hip. She kept pulling gently at it to make it fold symmetrically. I had to remind her that the only thing that matters is that it makes her feel wonderful....
Your dress is beautiful. Don't sweat it!

  24. Oh Honey, that is not EVEN noticable! When you have it on, it is going to disappear.

And that exposed zipper? Nasty. I do not like those, don't think it adds to the dress and really, what happens when her arm is down and scraping back and forth over those metal teeth? Nasty.

You, Carolyn, are going to SHINE :)

  25. LOL! I get like that myself! You're right, no need to care. There's too many great parts of the dress to focus on!

    ReplyDelete
  26. That is funny!!! And you know... some designer is now sweating the lack of small stuff now!
I've made a ton of these dresses and you know... my thought is.. if someone is that close to you to see that your off by such minisquel
fractions... then they are really too close!!! LoL... It looks great soo far!

  27. What mismatch? :) ...and that upholstery zipper on Kate Hudson's gown is awful. The idea of a zipper is not bad, but why isn't it a rhinestone Riri zippper?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Goodness! Your zipper looks like what ms. Hudson should be looking for in a couture gown. As it stands, she looks like she's wearing her dress inside-out!

  29. I had a similar microscopic mismatch in red dress. It annoyed me so much I had to make a belt to cover it! Kate's dress - definite thumbs down from me.
