A new member of the sewing family

I know I blogged about this months ago but I just made it to the sewing machine dealer to pick it up today.  Here is the latest member of my sewing family...

The older babylock serger has been put in the future sewing room for my daughter to pick up and take home with her.  I bought this serger because it's suppose to be easy to thread...leave it to me to make it difficult! *LOL*  I had the DVD going and the book out and still couldn't make it whoosh.

I was getting beyond frustrated until my DD came in and helped walk me through the steps.  You know it's so much easier when someone else is working the DVD player and stopping the DVD after every step instead of you trying to work the serger and the DVD player at the same time.  I finally got the machine threaded and to my daughter's consternation, made her  (okay asked her politely *LOL*) to go through the steps again when I unthreaded the machine and threaded it again.

It's going to take some time to get use to this but when I do I'm sure it's going to be a breeze to work.  Here is a look at the seam finish.

My older serger works and works well...but truthfully I'm tired of working with the tension and the threading.  My daughter, however, turns the knobs, plays with the tension and changes the blades with no problems...yeah she's the mechanical one!  So it will go play at her house and I will continue to learn my new baby...

BTW, while at the sewing machine shop I looked at the new Janome Horizon 7000 - be still my heart!  I almost walked out with a new sewing machine and a new serger BUT I truly need to have my new sewing room set up before I buy another machine...*sigh*

...as always, more later!

  1. Oh I relate . I have an old Janome Mylock 430 and its a complete bi..... to thread. I HATE it . However when its good it very good and I really mustnt give in to temptaion . I would love to buy the Baylock one where you press a button and it sucks the threads through the bits and all you have to do is thread the needles. Its VERY expensive though. I am doing battle with my Coverpro machine , a Janome 1000. Its great but I seem to have threading glitch at the moment.
I love your latest dress . Very elegant. Whats next on the agenda?

  2. are you saying your new serger sets the tension itself? I hate fixing the tension on my serger, in fact I usually organise my sewing around what thread is in my machine so I can avoid changing it too often....

I'm feeling a little envious now!

  3. Olá, sempre leio seu blog e adoro. Minha overloque ainda está na lista de "ferramentas a comprar" mas acredito que será de ajuda inestimavel.

  4. oh, I know what you mean! I have the same serger and it confused me in the beginning, too. Of course, I was too impatient to take the class and learn it that way, LOL.

But, once you have it, it will become second nature. congratulations, you will love it!

  7. I have the same serger and it is a beauty. I bought it when it first came out (I've lost track of how long ago that was)and it is a dream. It is very easy to thread once you learn it. Just make sure that the pressure foot is up. I forgot to do it once and I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't thread. Yes it does set the tension all by itself. After a number of years and various uses, it still sews like a dream. Enjoy!!!

  8. I just bought myself an Imagine as well!! I'm having so much more fun with it than with my "old" Singer!! I spent more time frustrated with the Singer's crazy threading and tension than serging.

I can't wait to see what you accomplish with yours. I'm planning to do a couple of t-shirts today, just to see how well it works.

  10. Congrats on your new purchase. I have the Babylock Evolve serger (8 threads) and I love it. Once you get comfortable with the Jet Air Threading you will wonder how you lived without it. The Auto Tension is great! I also purchased the Janome Horizon 7700 and it is great. I just couldn't resist when I demo the machine at my dealer (he sells Janome & babylock).

  20. Congratulations. I think you will LOVE your new serger. I've had an Imagine for almost 18 years and its still going strong, never needs adjusting. Once you're used to it you won't ever go back!

  21. I'm sure you will enjoy the new serger. I have a Babylock with "whoosh" threading. Here's a tip you may have already discovered: you have to put enough thread into the port for it to whoosh through. If the thread isn't long enough, there is no whoosh.

  23. It would be wonderful if we could press a button and get all the new innovations on our machines. I've got 3 machines and 1 serger. Why? Idunno

  25. Congrats on the new machine. I have the Evolve and it works great. When I follow the steps properly. I seem to forget to set the correct port so that the first couple of times I try I can't get the whoosh. :) But the more I use it the better I get. I finished the edges on a fleece blanket this weekend, I LOVE the wave stitch. It is just so cool. Ain't technology grand?

  26. Congratulations on your Baby Lock. I purchased the Evolution last year and it has surpassed my greatest expectations. I use the cover stitch often so there is a lot of needle switching, but I have totally got the hang of it and now its no big deal. The threading is the most wonderful thing I've ever seen.
