What do you think?

I know Pinterest is the newest addiction in the internet world but I like going to the source, so I'm still addicted to Net-A-Porter and Style.com.  I love seeing the close up of the garments, the back view, the accessories that were used to accent the piece and watching it move.

So everyone has their internet delights...what does this have to do with the title of my post?  I've wanted to make Vogue 8805...

as soon as it was posted to the Vogue site...especially since it resembles this Preen dress...

I know I want to make it from ponte knits and I have a good collection of them but I don't have orange or a turquoise blue.  I guess I could go down to the garment district and search amongst the stores for a yard of either color but there is this collection and I want to sew from the collection.  I also want to make the dress this weekend...not wait for another time...so I auditioned other options I could live with:

Here is the first choice (a) - stone, honey brown and dark brown:

or the second choice (b) - stone, navy blue, purple:

the third choice (c) -  maroon, brown, stone or the flip - stone, brown, maroon:

and the final choice (d) - stone, navy, red:

I won't tell you which combination I'm partial to but I am worried that the final choice will make me look like an American flag...not the look I'm going for...but it is the brightest looking combination similar to the Preen look.

There are a few construction changes I'm going to make...the pattern has a button loop closing on the back of the dress.  I'm going to add an invisible zipper like the designer dress instead of the button/loop closing.  Since the hemline on the pattern ends above the knee, I will lengthen the bottom block to just below the knee...a better look for me and for work.  Simple changes but necessary for me.

Even though this is not one of the dresses in my 10 yard adventure wardrobe, it is on my summer sewing list.  So I will be sewing from the list, just not in the order I thought and I'm fine with that.  Please let me know what combination you like by leaving a comment with the letter designated...I will count them all up Saturday morning and inform you of the popular vote.

...as always, more later!

  1. I vote for the 2nd combo. I love the purple and the blue.

  2. I also love option B--the blue and purple are lovely colors, and the stone gives it the lighter feel it needs. Options A and C just seem to drab or heavy to spark that "summer sewing" feel for me. And, for all that I am very patriotic, option B just seems prettier than the red, white and blue of D.

  3. I like the third set of colours. But they are all nice! With choice 4, you will look like a French or Dutch lad depending which colour you put ontop!

  4. I like choice (A) and (B) best. IMHO the last combo would give the dress a more "classical/marine/sailor" look, and change the "edgy/trendy" style of the Preen dress.

  5. Choice C! I love the combo of maroon with brown!

  6. C is the one that caught my eye immediately!

  7. Am going with C... it's a perfect combination if I were to make this

  8. My vote goes to combination B, with the purple, at least that is the one that immediately caught my eye. My second choice would be D, but I am not a big fan of the nautical/patriotic clothing look on adults. The other two just do not seem to have the same feel as your examples, A is just a tad too monochromatic, and there is not quite enough contrast between the brown and the maroon in combination C as far as the value of the hue. I am quite curious to find out which one will be your choice!

  9. I like D, clear and different colours but I'm not so good in mentoring in style. I'm very curious about your option. (And i'm not good in using the English language).

  10. My first reaction was the red white and blue of #4 and personally, I don't think it is too flag-like. I think it would look great.
    I also like #3 a lot.

  11. ha ha, just read all the comments - I see fans of each combo! good luck deciding :)

  12. Carolyn that is the exact problem I had when wanting to make this dress....no good color combinations in the fabric I wanted to use! I think your option 3 is my favorite. I made mine as the pattern stated but added a lining because I sewed mine in poly crepe and it felt scratchy to my skin, plus I just love a lined dress! I also agree to put the zipper into my next one instead of what the pattern called for. It is an easy sew! Can't wait to see your version.

  13. I'm quite partial to option C - but that may be because we're into Winter here. Otherwise, option B looks lovely, too.

  14. I would propose something entirely new! From top to bottom: stone, navy blue, maroon.

I think that would bring back some of the punch -- the original dress is not a single color gradient -- while still avoiding the overly patriotic appearance.

  15. I think Caroline's suggestion is a really good one if you want to have the same feel as the inspiration dress but not have to worry about being too 4th of July-ish.

If you wanted to go a slightly different way, I love choice B!

  16. I'm voting for pink blue and brown!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I like C best, with B as a close second. I am craving color this season! No blacks or browns! I lvoe the dress and maybe I will follow your lead and make one in my colection of colors. You inspire me all the time!

  18. If it was for me I'd go for Stone/Honey/Brown (I just love me some browns) but for you I reckon stone,brown/maroon. Can't wait to see what you have chosen.

  19. How about a combo of the last two: Stone, Navy, Maroon. Less American Flag that way. Or, Stone, Dark Brown, Red.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I vote for B! I love the blue and purple together, even if it isn't quite as big a contrast as in the inspiration piece.

    ReplyDelete
  21. What a beautiful dress. I love the stone, navy red! I love the colors together!

    ReplyDelete
  22. If you want a bright combo without the flag look, why not swap out the maroon for the red in the last combo? I think that would look great!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I vote for B! Second choice is D. I am partial to the blue colors though...

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'd go with option D and swap out the maroon or purple for the red to still get the color pop. I'm partial to the purple but option B just didn't have the edginess that option D gives.
I like the dress and think that any of your options will work, especially in a business setting.

  25. I propose another combo. How about stone, brown, red. I agree that the last one is too 4th of July. I have another version that I cut out of the Times during fashion week last year. It's orange, leopard and ivory. I don't remember who the designer is and I'm too lazy to go upstairs and look!

    ReplyDelete
  26. My first choice would be the red, white and blue, following in close second is stone, navy and purple.

    ReplyDelete
  27. All look good but I like C the best.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I like the stone/blue/purple but what if you switched a yellow for the stone? Surely there's some yellow somewhere in those stacks?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I propose Stone Purple Dark Brown (assuming my monitor shows the colors reasonably close to actual fabric).

If we have to choose one of the four, red white and blue would do it for me.

But they are all very attractive and I look forward to seeing the final product.

    ReplyDelete
  30. B! But then I am partial to Purple. Any choice you make will be the right one.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Either B, for color continuity, or D for brightness

    ReplyDelete
  32. I like option B the best. I do love purple so will always be drawn to the color combo. Option C would be my next choice. They will all look great on you so I will be interested in seeing the final product.

  33. Oh I love the maroon stone and brown, I might actually line them up - stone, maroon and then brown at the bottom to anchor it. That is a nice dress. g

    ReplyDelete
  34. I was going to suggest stone, blue & maroon as well, just to tone down the flag'ishness.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I like b or c best but would love to see how the stone, blue and maroon would look.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with Kelly, I like b or c! However, I also think the stone, blue and maroon would rock!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think the stone, navy and red. That seems the closest to the Net-a-porter dress. I am just waiting on this pattern too so will be keen to see yours finished up.

I'd like to say that I admire your fabulous style and that you adopt any style to suit your figure.

    ReplyDelete
  38. If it has to be one of the 4 options - I would go with B, possibly C - but I like Summerset's choices best!
    Blessings,
    Patti

  39. Good choices all but..... did you think about red, purple and stone? Just food for thought.

    Happy sewing,
    Marnita

  40. I'm quite partial to 'c' with the stone on top, then brown and maroon on the bottom. Yup, better pass on the red, white and blue!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm of no help - I love all the combinations. Although maybe the first 3 read more year-round wearability, somehow the 4th seems more spring/summer colors.

Or maybe as others suggested, move the maroon to the red position. Or move the brown to go with the purple or the red.

  42. "D." I would choose option "D." For delightful, darling, delicious, different, and other "d" words that mean good things. Too bad all our opinions are so scattered that we have not helped making your decision any easier, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I say versions C or D. I made my McCall's dress instead of this Vogue one, because I couldn't find a third fabric to match. LOL. This one is still high on my list, also.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have this same pattern on my list of things to sew also. My choice of fabric combo is the stone, navy, red and I also like the maroon, brown and stone.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I say the pink, stone and the purple. More contrast, more oooomph.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I vote D in the order you have them...closest to Net-a-Porter's and just right for summer. My favorite combintion is A, but I think it looks more fall.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I vote for stone/red/khaki or stone/navy/khaki.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I thought I had an original idea to swap out the red for maroon, but I see many others have beat me to that idea.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I love the b combination. The blue is crisp and reminds me of the sea. You could bring it on your cruise. If you didn't feel like wearing one of your long flowing dresses, this would look great with a straw bag and some nice sandals, sun glasses...yeah definitely. Plus with a ponte knit it would not wrinkle. Okay I am going to buy that pattern too the next time vogue patterns go on sale at JA's.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I like them all but my favorite is the stone, maroon and brown combo. If you need something for the 4th of July, the red, white and blue would be a good choice.

I find I like a lot of things on Pinterest and in a lot of cases it will lead you to the web source for the item. Such was the case for the dress you are planning to sew. I just got this pattern myself and hope to match it up with some double knits I have in my collection also.

    Have a great sewing weekend.

  51. Just read your latest... but I suppose I'm too late... no problem, you should go with what you like anyway... I do like the B and C choices though... (I'm partial to blue) but really like the roseish color... of the ones in C.
    Have fun!

    ReplyDelete
  52. My vote goes for C, with B coming in second.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I didn't read the other 50 opinions, but I say, Go for "C"!! I love the splash of maroon.
