I made this skirt back in the Fall of 2004 and haven't worn it in years. But when I pulled it out of the closet, I was amazed at the sewing details in this skirt. First, it's made from a vanilla medium to heavyweight wool crepe that I purchased from Paron Fabrics back in the day. It was an expensive purchase for me at the time, $22 per yard, and I bought 5 yards of it. I made this skirt and this dress from the fabric and I think there is still a yard and a half lurking in my fabric collection.
So about those details...
1. I used my TNT pencil skirt pattern.
2. The hemline is piped.
3. The piped hemline is faced.
4. The skirt has a back vent...
5. It is lined with a thin waistband.
...and this is how I'm going to wear it to my Company Christmas Party this week...
...that black lace top...found it at H&M for $7.50! Seriously, I never shop well besides buying fabric or shoes but after Hurricane Sandy the only place open and well-lit was the mall. So I spent an evening there with my children and this is one of the things that came home with me!
Of course this skirt works with quite a few tops and twinsets in my wardrobe, so it will go into the rotation this winter. I'm thrilled that seven years later this skirt has held up because I used quality sewing techniques to construct it.

ReplyDeleteHad you not revealed that you made this skirt in 2004, no one would have ever guessed. It looks like a brand new garment. The time and detail work you put into it really paid off.
Makes me want to take a second look at those things I pulled out of my own closet before making that trip to the donation center.
This is great: love your demo of how a good quality basic lasts forever. Phooey to those that say, if you haven't worn it for a year, toss it out! It really reinforces that 1. quality construction and 2. quality materials really pay for themselves. You look great in the set, too: gorgeous shoes!

ReplyDeleteIsn't it exciting to find treasure in your closet? I am always amazed how wonderful you look when you wear outfits that have light colored pants and skirts. The "darks on the bottom to hide the widest part rule" somehow got engraved in my brain. The piped hem is beautiful and is a great idea for saving a garment when I forget to check the length before cutting it out.
