Finally Denise who authors The Blue Gardenia learns to sow her blossoms blog, did an entire feature on my fellow sewists sewing rooms, here. So whenever I need inspiration I know where to look!
There are so many bright and cheery workspaces out there. All of them are so inviting and reflective of the owner's personality that I sometimes wonder if my sewing cave actually reflects my sewing personality. Then I hit the stairs, turn on the lights and sit down in the midst of MY sewing cave and realize that it's home.
It may not have wonderful windows showering light onto me and it may not be spacious with a chandelier but it's mine...dedicated to the thing I love to do. So while I have a few more ideas to change some things around to give the room a little more function, I'm going to revel in the fact that I have this oasis to come to any time I want!

After looking at your sewing room, I have stash envy! I think you have more fabric than the local J store. Brava!
ReplyDeleteA fabric store in your room - wow! I do have a dedicated sewing space that is the largest bedroom in the house. Just added a 7' x 2' made table at one end by a window so I'm now looking outside instead of at my ironing table. I am very fortunate to have a supportive husband; I also think he wants to make sure I have enough space so I don't annex his garage!
ReplyDeleteI have stash envy looking at your space as well! I have a pretty good stash too, so I can't complain! I was inspired by Jessica's new space as well. We will be moving in the near future and I have a new space to occupy. Love seeing other people's creative spaces!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a sewing room, I sew on the built in vanity in my bedroom. I plan to create a sewing room when my children leave the nest, which might be soon, my baby leaves for college in the fall.
ReplyDeleteYour stash is truly staggering. I love seeing other people's spaces, but I don't really get envy because I'm really happy with my little corner right now. It's the first set-up in a while that actually helps me feel inspired and creative.
ReplyDeleteYes. I have this lovely room. Great table space. Wall of shelves. Hardwood floors. Lots of natural and artificial light. Pretty framed pictures on the wall. But I prefer sewing in the dining room! Closer to the kitchen and the laundry room.

ReplyDeleteAnd yes! I want those sewing rooms! I mean, my own studio has done very well for me and I am extremely grateful for it. But wouldn't it be fabulous to have, like, a studio like the Chanel people have :-)
I get sewing room envy so badly! Right now, I have a little nook in our one-bedroom apartment with a table and one set of shelves. I try to remind myself that my sewing space really does fit with the amount of sewing time I have right now. I could definitely fill up a fabulous studio, but would just feel sad because I wouldn't be able to use it very often. I know I'll be able to have a real one eventually, but the waiting is definitely hard when there's so many amazing ones on all the blogs, including yours! :)

ReplyDeleteI do get room envy every now and again. And yet - I have a huge space in our basement with big windows and lots of light - natural and otherwise. Still, I think there are things I could do differently and I'm about ready to start moving stuff again. Have to give it some thought. g

ReplyDeleteI have sewing room envy of every one who has a sewing room! Still living at home my sewing machine is confined to my room, although my overlocker is allowed to live in the communal 'computer room'!

Beautiful rooms, and so nice to work in. I admire your sewing space. It is very workable. My stash nearly equals yours. There are NO fabric stores where I live so I do most shopping online and I can't resist a good sale. But, as I tell my husband, I need a stock of notions, interfacing, etc. Of course that doesn't necessarily cover the whole fabric stash, but I'm trying. Soon my sewing space will move from a bedroom I have the whole use of, to a room that will include an entry to our home. So it will have to be cleaned up enough so guests don't run screaming in shock. I'm in a mild state of panic.
ReplyDeleteHi Carolyn. I have a dedicated sewing space, but it has no walls! I have a sewing desk in a corner of our living room but I have to clean it off every night, leaving only my covered machine and my sewing case on it, because of my cats. I actually like that I'm not closed off from the rest of the family while I'm sewing and I can be a part of family life even when I'm sewing. I feel lucky that I have my own desk and don't have to set my machine up on the kitchen table.

I am lucky enough to have a sewing room, though I have not been great about styling it up. Despite how much I love looking at, and sometimes feel a twinge of envy of, other sewists sewing rooms, I appreciate what I have so much. I have a space that is totally mine and the space and freedom to junk it up, paint it up and whatever it up that I want! And that's nothing to sneeze at!!

I have carved out a sewing space for myself. I took over part of the dining room, and so that I would feel it was truly my space I put up book shelves, put wall paper on the back side of them that looks out into the dining part of the room. I have shelves stacked to the ceiling almost and everything is handy except for my fabric. I have a storge room where I keep it all in totes.
ReplyDeleteI am in the process of moving my sewing space from a vacated bedroom (DD#1 moved out) which was also my computer space to my family room. Now I have a personal office and an even larger sewing space. DD#1 was helping me stack fabric and complained 'Mom, no one needs this much stuff'. I said 'just think, if something happens to me it will all be yours'. She laughed and said 'to do what?' Then I reminded her of her teenaged fetish for silly bands--girlfriend must have had at least 500 of them. I said 'I'm a happy woman when I'm creating something'. She then said 'well sew on, Mom, sew on'. So to all those sewists and creative folks out there--your space does not define you--you define your space and sew on, sew on.
ReplyDeleteOh I have major sewing room envy when I see them all so tidy. I have a dedicated sewing room most of the year (guest room for about 2 weeks a year)but my biggest problem is how to store all the paper inspiration I bring into the house, the pile is getting enormous and set to take out my overlocker any day.
ReplyDeleteI love my space and take great pride in it. I have the pretty and neat space to work and create in, all decorated. Then I have a big closet and another connected down and dirty room to store all my goodies, best of both worlds.
ReplyDeleteI *have* a sewing space that is all mine. It's just a nook on the other side of the laundry, but it's big enough for my sewing machine, serger and ironing board. So much better than sewing in the bedroom or living room. But, lordy lordy is it a mess. I need a week of no sewing...just cleaning...to get it organized and pretty. Well, scratch pretty. That would need paint and new flooring. Organized. Then maybe I could find stuff without digging through all the shifting piles...

ReplyDeleteThanks for featuring my room! Like everyone else, I am in awe of your stash - and I think it must be inspiring to see it all! My stash lives in the attic because I don't have room for it downstairs, and I have to have a program to keep track of it - not the same!

I have been looking at sewing rooms for inspiration as I have a spare room in the house now with DS leaving for varsity. Like you I think Karen's sewing room is nirvana! However reality is a table next to the window in the spare room.

ReplyDeleteOh yes,I get sewing room envy. I like to think of it as "getting ideas from others". I have a sewing room (part office) and have taken over most of the guest room. Hey, where there is space my sewing fabric and supplies move in! I have lots of ideas to improve the look/organization of my sewing home. I'm getting there but have to spend some time sewing my collections.
ReplyDeleteAfter sharing a guest room/office/sewingspace for years I am lucky to have a dedicated space - about half of our basement family room. Though right now it isn't super grand (plastic 23"x47" folding table is my cutting table and while I'm glad to have it, my cutting mat is 25" wide...
ReplyDeleteBut yes I still do get sewing room envy at times. But it is also fun to look at other spaces and glean ideas for mine.
I am so thankful I have a sewing room. Like many of you, I made do when my kids were growing up. I wish I had more time to spend in it!

Now that I live in a small 1 BR apartment, I definitely have sewing room envy. I agree with you about the room you call the Holy Grail, but all are nice. In your first photo, am I seeing a Christening coat hanging from the fabric shelves? You have a fabulous supply of fabric. WOW! I thoiught I had a lot but the majority of my stash is for dressing antique dolls, or quilting. My sewing for me stash is not what I wish. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou and I are somewhat alike Carolyn; you had to move your sewing cave etc... when the storm came onto shore. Me, we had our basement flooded a few weeks back. So things had to be moved out and cleaned out. Thankfully nothing was destroyed! Oh, a basket full of patterns got good and wet, but I was able to dry them out. Long story short; since everything got moved out of my sewing room; why not paint! Painted last week, new baseboards in (we are changing out the baseboards thru out the house room by room) and wonder of wonder... new wall to wall carpet this next week! Yeah!!!! There are some super beautiful rooms out there, you showed a few of them that I too have seen. But there is nothing like my sewing room! I appreciate it; because it's mine! And I remember when I didn't have one at all! Enjoy the space you've

Those are such beautiful sewing rooms! And your fabric is so neatly folded, I'm speechless. I went from having a whole house to having a 9x12 foot room. Everything in the room has to be able to move in order to function. The ironing board is set up in the hallway and it has to be moved so the other bedroom and bathroom can be accessed. It's pitiful!

All the sewing rooms are wonderful but my favorite is the one with the black furniture. Living in a 1 BR apartment, I would be grateful just to have a dedicated sewing room. I set up a Big Board in the living room when I sew and have an angtique side board in the kitchen that works for smaller projects if I pad the top or put on a cutting mat. I love your stash! Amazing and wonderful. Am I seeing a Christening gown on a hanger on the shelves?

ReplyDeleteMy sewing room is the guest bedroom. Or, better said...my sewing room is the guest bedroom. During the winter. The rest of the year I move my machines to the 3 season porch. Minus spring this year! Spring finally sprung here in SD, but now we are going back down into the 40's with a chance of rain/snow mix Wednesday. Our need for moisture is far greater than my need or 'want' to move my machines!!!

ReplyDeleteI also have a huge bit of stash envy - maybe not so much the quantity you have, Carolyn, but that it All. Goes. Together. I don't see anything that doesn't go with at least 80% of the other fabrics. I fear too many of my purchases are of the "oooo pretty, must have!" type.
I have a dedicated sewing room and it is constantly changing as my work routine changes. For example, instead of working on one garment piece at a time I'd work a little bit on all the pieces. This called for new project bins. I had to move things around to accommodate for them. Luckily I think I've found my sewing groove, so things won't get reorganized for a while.
