When did Amazon start selling sewing patterns? AND other ramblings...

I nearly fell over when I got an email from Amazon touting Simplicity patterns. When did this happen?

I know you can buy a sewing machine and almost any kind of notion...though I was amazed at the quality of sewing machine you could purchase from Amazon.  I know you can get Burda magazine subscriptions and they are my go to place to purchase a sewing book ~ but patterns?  Geesh I think Amazon is trying to take over the world!  Is fabric next?
+ + + + +

I haven't sewn in two weeks.  People, I'm starting to shake from withdrawal. I spent so much time sewing in January and February that I hate that I've started March without spending any quality time in the sewing cave.  So this weekend, I'm going downstairs and I'm only leaving during the 47 hours to eat and for calls of nature.  I've got garments that need to be made!  I also can't believe that I'm losing an hour this weekend...seriously don't the powers that be realize that I NEED that hour!

Here's my dress now...

Hopefully I can turn it into something wearable this weekend...

However, this brings me to the spring phenomena that is appearing on some of my fellow sewing bloggers blogs...I understand how fed up with winter we all are, but, honestly I just can't sew for spring yet. Seriously, I'm still freezing! I can't imagine sewing a bunch of lightweight stuff that has to wait until late May/early June to be worn. That would definitely depress me...

So if I ever get that knit dress that's been laying on the sewing table for the last two weeks finished, I'm moving onto some red WOOL doubleknit fabric to make a few pieces from...

...sewing for spring...mutter mutter...ain't happening here...mutter mutter...folks are delusional...mutter mutter...there's still a whole lot of dayum snow on the ground here...
+ + + + +

I want to say congratulations to my girl Oonaballoona who won first place in the Project Sewn competition!  This was Week Four's winning look...

...and it was a month of this type of deliciousness!  Girl you did the dayum thing and I'm sooooooo proud of you!  Congrats again...job well done!

I really appreciate all of the wonderful messages you left on the Featured Blogger post. I did something I normally don't ~ which is reply to almost every comment that was left. I truly appreciate all of your well wishes and wanted to show that. So thank you sooooooo much once again!

May I also add that Vogue is taking nominations for other sewing bloggers to feature.  If you have a favorite that you'd like to see spotlighted, make sure you send an email to the address in the magazine and I'm sure Vogue will consider them!

Finally, after thinking about it long and hard, I'm not applying to participate in The Sewing Bee.  I have my reasons but I'm wishing everyone that did apply good luck!  Hopefully the pilot will be really successful and they will need a lot of sewists to participate in the series. If I learn any new information about the pilot or the series, I will post it to the blog!

Okay that wasn't the last thing...just one more thing...it's a little thing but it's starting to bother me.  My given name is Carolyn.  I really hate Caroline just so you know...

...as always more later!

  1. I am with you on two things, I have hardly sewn the last week (one short of you) but it is bothering me, too. I just get home too late to seem to head to the sewing room. Also, I can't make spring things yet either, the air has so much coldness to you.

Enjoy your sewing cave this weekend.

  2. Hate to astonish you, but...Amazon already sells fabric. A sewing blogger (sorry, can't remember which one) recently showed some pretty fabric she bought from Amazon. I went to Amazon to make a search, but quickly tired of the abundance.

    2. Thanks for this post! I am browsing Amazon and thinking about all the patterns that I haven't been able to find in my local stores!

    3. Yep. Amazon bought out fabric.com a few years ago. A lot of the fabric available on Amazon comes through their affiliated fabric.com site

  3. Amazon and fabric? I guess they sell everything so why would fabric be different, but I still find it weird.

I'm with you on not sewing for spring yet.

  4. Amazon does the fulfillment for Fabric.com. Probably others, too, I'm just not aware of them. So, it does make some kind of crazy sense.

  5. I feel you on the name thing! Mine is foreign -- but short -- and I used to let people spell and pronounce it every which-a-way until I got totally sick of that.

  6. Oh - sewing, how I miss you. My Fabric Mart order arrived while I was on your Coast. Now to find time. I hope you get lots sewn up in your 47 hours! g

  7. Hahaha! There's at least 5 feet of snow in my yard and I said to heck with it and sewed a sleeveless top for this summer! ;)

Amazon bought fabric.com or something like that. I hate amazon. Hate. I had to buy something for work today and was so annoyed. it's like a junky flea market there is so much muck to wade through.

I am going to be a sewing sista this weekend too. My husband is traveling so that means no side eyes at spending hours in the cave. Yessssss!

"See" you and your makes on Monday! :)

    1. Sewing sista checking in! That's my goal too! I'm finishing off a sleeveless top and a lined vest. Time to build that spring wardrobe one garment at a time.

  8. every time I see that east coast weather I cringe - I could not survive ! and yes I am sewing for spring here - many sightings of people in sandals and shorts last weekend. By the way, Amazon purchased Fabric.com in 2008 so essentially they have been selling sewing fabric and supplies for a good long while.

  9. That's not a little thing! It's your name!! ☺It infuriates me when people spell my name incorrectly, especially in an email when it is there for all to see in my email address.... Doesn't take long to check either. Oh my goodness, rant over I'm off to get coffee after this.... As for Amazon, that is a whole other rant so I'm just going to end by saying: enjoy your weekend of sewing Carolyn. I hope it is very fruitful. Rachel ☺

  10. You sound just like me about the spring thing. I think everyone is delusional too :) everyone around here is under the impression that spring is right around the corner even though we are covered in this crusty icy snowy stuff and the temps are going to go back down to the 30's again next week after our big warm up on Saturday of the big 46 degrees that everyone thinks is going to melt everything. Delusional...

I cannot sew spring stuff at all untill we are out of the freezer box. Too cold. I just can't get warm :)

  11. I only discovered recently that Amazon were selling patterns when I was searching for an oop Vogue pattern. Even though they are selling it cheaper than anyone else I can find, I can't bring myself to buy it from them. I wasn't a fan of Amazon before but there was a documentary on recently about the working conditions for their employees here in the UK and it was not good. I am not sewing for Spring yet, we have fortunately not had your cold weather and snow, but we have had three months of rain and gale force winds. Hope you have an enjoyable and productive 47 hours.

  12. I'm trying to sew for the cold weather because we had a few cooler days but had to give up sewing with wool when we had a surprise hot day and I was sweating! I do admire those that plan ahead and stick to their plans though!

  13. I am one of those bloggers that is starting to sew for spring! Having lived in Pennsylvania over 10+ years ago I would continue to sew wools and such 'cause there,as where you live, spring does not arrive until May!! The first year I lived in PA, there was snow on the ground in April!!! Looking at the weather projections for next week in SW VA, highs in the 60's. Love it.

I am sure you are going through withdrawal not sewing for two weeks. Glad you will spend the weekend making your dress.

  14. "Hello," offering my hand, "I'm Barbara." "Nice to meet you Barb." What did i just say? Did I say "Barb?" BARB? We won't bring up the "friend" who calls me Babs LOL! Rant over!

  15. Totally can't see any sewing for spring just yet. Oddly, I love wearing dresses in the winter and have been sewing one of my favorite tnt (New Look 6697) dress patterns, and lengthening them to accommodate the non-stop boot wearing.

    1. See that's it Sheila - I'm not a boot wearing so I've totally been living in pants and I hate it! So ready for a dress or a skirt!

  16. Loved the stream of consciousness writing! I'm new to your blog and I've enjoyed what I've read. I'm new to sewing and I'm absorbing as much as I can. Learning of new blogs, trying out tutorials, learning the best places to shop and the coolest contests.

I just wanted to check in and say thanks for being one of my 1st bloggers that I go to for my daily dose of sewing talk.

  17. thank you carolyn! your support really meant so much to me. i honestly tried to do you proud!!

as for march, well, i hope you're in your cave. i can't seem to get a minute, until the end of the evening when i happily stitch and then realize the next morning i'll have to pull it out!! :)

  18. I feel your pain about the winter sewing doldrums! I've decided to clean out my sewing closet and then do some makes with lightweight wool jersey that will work in just about any season here in New England. In the 40s they even used it for beach attire, but I don't think I can go there...

  19. Carolyn - your name is not a little thing. It's a big part of who you are. I totally understand. I get Myra or Marina quite often. Every time I write you, I try to remember to double check that I didn't quickly type Caroline because I have another friend by that name and it's so easy to do when I don't pay attention. Happy sewing this weekend.

  20. Though we haven't had as harsh a winter as the east has, I still am not thinking spring anything. Maybe tomorrow if the temperatures soar upwards as predicted but not today -- snow and below freezing.
    Have a great weekend sewing.

  21. Dear Carolyn, Amazon does sell fabric and I was surprised to find that out. I do think Amazon may be trying to take over the world. I wonder if you can buy a house on Amazon?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Around this neck of the woods, I don't even consider spring clothing until sometime in May. And we've been known to get snow into June. I've got a good couple of months left in which to fondle those lovely cold weather fabrics I have!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Carolyn -- misspelling of your name is annoying. I too am still sewing for cold. I will admit to ordering some spring fabrics, but will not start sewing them for at least a month. Now for that time change don't get me started. Here in Alaska we are currently gaining 5 + minutes of daylight each day depending on where you live. Now add in the time change and man it really throws off the body.
Meanwhile enjoy every minute of sewing this weekend, cannot wait to see your completed dress. Red wool sounds wonderful.
Spring arrives here the first part of May, thats when trees start getting their leaves.

  24. Amazon sells out of print patterns. I picked up a OOP Miyake for list price, and the Sewing Workshop Origami blouse for...8$? It seems to work as the used book sales work (register as seller, list by ISBN). Because of that, I HIGHLY recommend folks do a general internet search for a pattern they desire, rather than just go to the pattern house or Ebay. Yes, a lot of dead ends, but some pretty sweet deals.

  25. I'm near Sacramento, California. We didn't get too many weeks of winter this year and Spring often happens over the course of a week with very little warning. I will be sewing my boys some shorts and some spring tops--just in case.
I'm ashamed to admit this, but I have bought some patterns on Amazon. I found a couple that were out of print and I wanted them NOW. I got them within a couple days and had my projects done quickly. I also bought some quilting fabric for a quilt a few years ago.

  26. My sewing has ground to a halt too, it always seems to as the seasons are (or supposed to be!) changing. I have saved your blogger post for another day, can't wait to go through the list and discover some new blogs. I'm also excited to see if I will "know" anyone from the American Sewing Bee, hopefully I will be able to find a way to watch it. Enjoy your sewing weekend!

  27. Spring has definitely arrived here in San Francisco! I hope it arrives in NJ very very soon!

  28. No! I'm sad that you're not applying for the Sewing Bee! :'( I haven't sewn in two weeks, either, and it feels weird and sad! Have a very happy sewing weekend!

  29. When looking for a specific out of print pattern, Amazon was the go to place. I've purchased vintage and out of print patterns through them. Also quilting fabric.Love sewing cooler/cold weather clothes - need to get to my wool stash before the moths do! Enjoy your sewing weekend - I'm going to start at least two projects that really, really need to see the final seam sealant sometime soon (been on the wish list too long).
