I Have a Ponte Problem

As they say in those 12 Step Programs, admitting your problem is the first step. So we all know that I'm a fabricaholic. It's well documented and if you've had the opportunity to visit my sewing cave, you can attest to that fact. But lately, I've found that I have a ponte problem.

Yes, sure some of it is aggravated by the fact that Fabric Mart has an awesome selection of ponte fabric, but honestly I love sewing it and gravitate towards it. Because of that, I own a lot of ponte...so much that I'm publicly declaring that I'm not purchasing any more until the end of the year - well at least until January 2015.

Really why do I need more...when these beauties reside in the collection...

Blue/Black Circles, Black, Black & Tan Lace Ponte knits from Fabric Mart
Navy & Green stripe from Girl Charlee

Wine & Mulberry Ponte knits from Fabric Mart
Brown floral from Vogue Fabrics
Black/white diamond and green/navy stripe from Fabric Mart

Brown/gold/black houndstooth, Green/white/black/gray stripe
Red/gray/black stripe & black 'n white graphic houndstooth
All from Fabric Mart

Black/Gray Paisley Ponte from Emmaonesock, Black/white stripe Ponte
Green ponte, Pink Chevron Ponte and Yellow Ponte from Fabric Mart

All 18 of them piled together...

Then there is a cabinet full of them...

I have no idea how much is in here and I'm not counting...*sigh*

...then there's four yards of a black ponte that I found when my daughter was looking for fabric that I didn't even realize I owned, and four yards of a heavy weight black ponte that I bought to make a trench. I'm almost sure there is some royal blue ponte that I didn't photograph and a scrap of a bright teal ponte knit that I was holding onto to make a quick elastic waist pencil skirt.

Honestly, it's time to sew more and acquire less! There's plenty of inspiration in the collection, in every color and loads of prints. To that end, my next dress has been cut out and is being worked on using this ponte print...

So that will be the next completed dress on the blog...and quite a few more pieces will be coming from fabric already in the collection. Now to show some more restraint during those Fabric Mart sales!!!

...as always more later!

  3. That's just awesome! A good amount of ponte in one's stash is an absolute necessity. I was just looking for some tonight in my stash...I'm just hoping it's enough!

  4. If only you could be a fabric stylist and buy it for clients to fill their stashes :-) All the fun, none of the storing.

  7. You will definitely win the 'who's got the most Ponte" contest! Love that red print on the table and can't wait to see what you do with it.

Have you found the quality of FM ponte really good, as in any pilling? I've heard pros and cons and would love your opinion, which I know will be an honest one. Thanks, Carolyn.

    1. Bunny - here's my problem, I have so much clothing now that garments get one maybe two wearings a season...so it takes 3-4 years for one of my garments to pill. I think that's normal but if a sewist is wearing the garment alot and then washing and drying it alot, they may pill faster. However, I can confirm that pontes pill even the expensive ones. Nothing lasts forever. So my advice would be if you are going to wear the garment a lot or are hard wearing on your garments than expect them to pill quickly or pick another type of fabric.

  8. I have the same problem. Love it, it sews so beautifully. I'd like to have 1/3 of yours to add to my mini collection.

  9. I'm working on a ponte dress right now. It is one of my favorite fabrics. The black and tan from FM is next on the sewing list. It wants to be a wrap dress with a leather buckle. I'm trying to be really good and use up some fabric before I buy any more. Now I have to go check out some of those sources. I made a pair of pants from a FM ponte and I wear them once a week. They have not pilled yet.

  10. I love the ponte you've selected - FabricMart? I, too, have bought a lot from them, but have played it safe and only bought solids. But I haven't sewn a single one.

  12. I've seen some of those same FM ponte prints in my stash (sigh). I adore ponte. It sews well--so versatile. I delete the fabric emails as soon as I see them. I'm trying to work with what I have. That print on the table is gorgeous!

  13. Carolyn, my dear -

You can never have too many shoes, too much money or too much fabric! Don't sweat it. If you really need to make space for more, have another give-away. Otherwise - ENJOY!

  14. I'm with Vernelle, if you really need to make space for more, I'll be glad to be the give-away and we can start with the geometric print (red, cream, black, tan) in the cabinet or the green, grey white stripe! LOL!!!

  17. Lovely, lovely! Do you prefer any particular blend of fabrics for your ponte? I bought some gorgeous rayon/poly ponte and it pilled terribly after just a couple of washes.

  20. I seem to be buying more ponte knits as well. However when I go to Fabric Mart to look at their collection, I don't see what I want. Now I know why you have them all in your collection!!! :-)

  21. Oh such beautiful fabric. I covet ponte that I could just go and buy but I hardly ever see it here and when I do it is not in such fantastic prints or just super poor quality. Drool, drool.

  22. I am also a ponte addict. I have a few of those too!! :)

AND it's 50% off today. Sorry. I have "shopped" and closed out twice already!

  31. Because I have been following you for so long, I too now have a nice ponte stash.
Oh, and btw- I am an enabler.
Ponte is 1/2 off this week at FMF- but I am sure you know that already- sorry.

  32. I paid for a storage unit for 2 years to make room for my growing stash....I'm not seeing a problem. LOL. Seriously though, there are some amazing ponte fabric pieces in your stash!

  33. You have some beautiful pieces!!

  34. Oh I'm feeling fine all over again. After spending some time organizing I was worried about the abundance. But seriously, you have so much more than me!! You get to win the phrase on the sewing room mug.
But that's not why I wanted to comment tonight. I wanted to ask, do you find you have a problem with Ponte pilling? Do you make pants from it, and if so, do you have a problem with knees and butt bagging out? I have a short stack of Ponte in my closet - maybe a dozen pieces all together - mostly red or black, all solids. I *think I want a pair of pants from ponte, but I'm not sure.
Love that ponte you're using for the latest TNT dress.

    1. I only wear pants now during the winter and the coldest parts of winter at that so I stick to wools for pants - no help there! As I told Bunny earlier, I have a lot of clothing so my garments don't get a lot of wear, so I don't usually experience pilling issues until 3-4 years in. I haven't had any pontes pill after one wearing...but that's just my experience.

  35. I am envious of your ponte collection! I can never seem to find any I like. I guess that's because you bought them all, LOL! ;-)

  36. I love that red, white and black. Can't wait to see what comes from that.
