The Sewing Cave is on display!

Just a quick note to let you know that "The Sewing Cave" is featured on the Curvy Sewing Collective today.  So if you're interested in seeing it and hearing me ramble about "the why and what it means to me" surf on over and check it out!

It's the second sewing room showcased in this series with Gaylen of GMarieSews being the first.  It's a monthly series so after you read about mine, check out Gaylen's. I hope you'll follow this monthly series and the sewist who will be featured next! Cause y'all know we all like to see where our fellow sewists create!

I'll be back with more sewing over the weekend!

...always more later!

  1. I was looking at your fabric stash over Curvy Sewing Collection, and I am curious how do you know how fabric to purchase when you have no clue what you are wanting to make, but love the fabric. Or there is a great sale or something. I miss a lot of good deals because I have no idea how much fabric to buy for general purposes. Thank you for your response. And I really enjoy your blog. Joy

    1. Joy - over the course of my sewing career I've had rules for different amounts to purchase. For a good part of my 30s the rule was 5 yards, me and my friends called it the Carolyn 5. 5 yards meant that I could sew anything - pants, skirt, dress from one piece and leftover pieces were large enough for me to make garments for my daughters.

Then I developed rules based upon garment type - 2-3 yards for pants, 1.5 yards for a skirt, 2 yards for a dress or blouse and bought that way. Do you see how the fabric accumulated?

Lately, I have a garment type in mind when I buy so my yardage is based upon what I want to make. But this is all subjective and I tend to buy a little more than needed, in case I change my mind.

  3. Loved seeing your entire sewing cave. It makes me happy to see your fabric and imagine you spending time there just dreaming. At least that's what I do when I touch and fondle my beloved fabrics. Your layout has me wondering how I can change my room. My large cutting table (72" X 45") takes up so much space but I find it a necessity. Karen

  5. Love love the look into your sewing cave. Thank you for sharing, I am envious of the time you are able to spend in the cave - at present I am on the 20 minutes a day target. I cannot wait to see what you do with the outfit plan. Love how you develop your creative ideas. Jacqui

  7. I love it! I thought you had a lot more fabric for some reason, but that doesn't look like a crazy amount to me, and I love how color coordinated it all is, that must make it a lot easier to see an overal wardrobe plan, you can pick out a color in this section and grab a coordinate in that section. I think I need to get my fabrics on shelves where I can see them, I want to sew but at the moment the stuff is nearly inaccessible (in the trundle part of a trundle daybed). I think this is affecting my creativity, so I think I need to study your room in detail and takes some ideas to work on my own space. I do at least have my own room, it clearly needs some tweaking! Thanks so much for sharing your space!

    1. Schmoomom - having my fabric organized by color and available to look at is one of the best elements of my sewing room. Being able to pull the curtains back at any moment and check for a type or a color or even being able to touch and pull out pieces to see if they coordinate really fuels my sewing. I would highly recommend it if you can make it work!

Right now it's really helping me NOT to buy fabric. If I get hooked on a type or a color, I just ramble through the shelves until I find something that works. Someone wrote that fabric is the fuel of our creativity and I truly believe that - it's why I own so much fuel/fabric!

I hope you get your sewing room set up so that it works for you!

  8. I loved getting to see your sewing cave! It was real and it was awesome! I sometimes dream about someday having a sewing space all my own (it's slowly taking over our master bedroom at the moment) and I loved the inspiration that your space offers me.
