Sewing for Fall

The September Fall Fashion Issues have arrived and I've pawed through them. The fall patterns are in the pattern catalogs and the calendar is ticking towards September. It's time to start thinking about sewing for fall.

In the last couple of years, I've planned what I NEEDED to sew for my work wardrobe due to my current situation. However, this year I'm thinking about what I WANT to sew. How I can get creative with some patterns that I've already used, as well as sewing some new patterns.

Last September I sewed for the grandbabies. I'm skipping that this year, though I will be making them some jean jackets for fall. I'm concentrating on upgrading my fall/winter wardrobe. I've discovered that I love sewing blouses/shirts. I've added some more shirting fabrics to the collection to use for new versions of my TNT pattern mashup. I'm also on the hunt for some fabulous white shirting for a couple of white shirts.

Planned are more denim dresses and a few shirtdresses made from fall fabrics, worn with tights or leggings and shoe booties or sneakers. I've finally broken the "corporate dress look" block in my head and I can see casual dresses in fabrics that fit better in my current work atmosphere. So I have a few ideas that I'm very excited to sew up.

I collected quite a few interesting fabrics for jackets & toppers last year. I didn't get around to using them but I definitely want to sew some of them this fall/winter. I used McCalls 7481 this spring and I want to work on a couple versions this fall. There was another Tamarack Jacket on my early spring list that needs to get made this season too. It will work for fall so that's on the list too. Especially since I wear my Kantha Quilt version ALOT in the deep winter on Monday mornings because our office is so cold.

Here's a look at the patterns I'm thinking about using for my fall sewing...

I've made a short list of items I want to sew because those short lists seem to be working for me. I think I only left three unsewn items on my summer list of 16 - not bad.

So it's the last week of August and Labor Day weekend is approaching. I have 3.5 days off to sew this weekend, plus the 3.5 days I had last week, so I've started working on my fall list. How about you? Are you thinking about fall sewing?  Have you started planning yet or are you riding out summer and waiting until you have to start wearing fall clothing? Cause it will be fall and cold before you know it!

It's gonna be a minute before finished garments show up here because I'm burrowing in and sewing!

...as always more later!

  2. Hi Carolyn, I love it when you post. You are so much more organized than I am and I am unwilling to let go of summer so easily I guess! I have lists but then I get sidetracked. I am sewing a few Charlie caftans for my daughter and her trip to Italy in September. I have wanted a pair of midi length wide culottes all summer and now I will try to make them fall ones. I want to try the Jalie Eleanor jeans and a few warm tops and then will need to get sewing for Sew Expo in February. I work LoriAnne's booth (LoriAnne Patterns) now that Marcy does not attend. Maybe I will try your way and make short lists. Have a super week!

  3. YAY for burrowing in and sewing!!

I almost always start fall sewing with the month of August (and a couple of summer projects or transitional projects sneak in).

I'm excited to get back into the swing of things. I'm low on basics (they wear out faster than other garments-as expected), and I plan to do a mini wardrobe of 4-5 pieces for the month of September.

I added that Butterick pattern to my wishlist. Super cute casual top. I also love(!) the first two inspiration pics! I've never really sewn tunics but yesterday I wished I had one to throw on over leggings. So I may have to make one soon.

  4. Living in Northeast Houston with a hubby in the hospital it was a great distraction to see your post today and to think about sewing for fall. Please have your readers donate to the Red Cross as they do such amazing work for disasters and, believe me, Houston is really suffering now. Karen

    1. Karen - I know. One of my closest friends lives in Houston and I check on her a couple times a day. I've already made my donation to the Red Cross because downtown Houston is devastated.

  5. Yes I have started Fall sewing, I've made a kimono in a sweater knit as my office is cold also. Thank you for reminding me that I too wanted to make a Tamarck jacket also for the fall.

  6. oh heck no! August in California means we have at least a month of summer weather and sometimes it lingers into October. I always want summer to last forever so that suits me just fine. Autumn is my least favorite season so I prefer to mentally skip it :)

    1. Beth - I think I like autumn so much because of the changing of the leaves, the crispness in the air, and the humidity is gone. What I don't like is how short the days become and how its dark so early...leading to dreaded winter which I like least of all.

  7. I think your fall sewing plans are off to a great start! M7470 is really nice! For myself, I will be doing Fall sewing really late this year. I plan on starting a jacket next month, but not getting into multiple pieces for my wardrobe until October. I look forward to seeing what you accomplish!

  8. I'm still plugging away at my summer sewing project list, but your post has inspired me to think beyond what's on my cutting table now! I think I'll start with a jacket. You can never have enough. I look forward to seeing what you sew!

  10. We've had such bad weather over here that it feels like summer still hasn't begun. I think I'll ignore fall sewing for a while, although your plans are very inspiring!

  11. I never got to summer sewing, so I think I'm going to skip it and just jump right on into fall and winter sewing. I need a wool coat, and some jackets for a range of weather conditions.

  12. OMGoodness you find the BEST inspiration garments! A short list of 16 would have me rocking in the corner not getting any sewing done. I have one knit dress to finish up then my big sewing machine is going into embroidery mode to get ready to dress up the B&B for the next couple of holidays. Halloween and Christmas. Not sure about Thanksgiving. I have a short list of sewing for the B&B and a short list of personal sewing. Let's see what gets done.

Love love love your inspiration garments and I'm excited to see how you bring them to your closet. g

  13. I always enjoy seeing what you choose as inspiration garments and how you go about knocking them off. My favorite thing is seeing how others go about the creative process. I wish they showed more of that on Project Runway. I'm looking forward to September too. Maybe I'll celebrate sewing month with every day in September in my studio. Even if just for 5 minutes.

  14. I just love popping over here to sew what you are thinking about making, and making! Even though it's winter here in Oz. Thanks for the inspiration to get me back into sewing for spring!
