November was Good to Me!

Well the end of the year is approaching with only 31 days left.  So I'm reviewing these last 30 days, my buying habits and what I made...cause November was a good sewing month for me.

The Fabric Struggle Continues...
First, let's deal with my fabric piggyness ~ or my "In and Out" totals. I'd already purchased 14 yards before I added an additional 22.5 yards with my Black Friday purchases. *sigh* There are a whole lot of things I could say about that but why? We know fabric is my weakness and some months I'm better at containing the piggyness than others.  The total amount of fabric in this month is 36.5 yardsDEFINITELY a month of overabundance.

The only good thing is that my out total is pretty high. Not high enough to cover the abundance but adequate.  Part of the reason the output is so high is I precut five garments a couple of weeks back. I discussed that in this post. While I've only sewn three of the garments I precut, once fabric is cut it comes out of inventory...plain and simple. So my out total is 22.5 yards. Just one less purchase and I would have broken even...*sigh* There will be a post on what actually came after the last of the fabric arrives. Yes that's right...there is still more coming...

New out total for the year so far is:  208.25 yds. I know this is the amount of some peoples stashes but honestly this is just a drop in the bucket in my world. There is still an overabundance of fabric in the sewing cave. I'm not feeling like I met my goal to sew primarily from the collection but I will discuss that more in my year end post.

New Additions to the Closet...

I made six garments:
     - Blue Gingham Shirt
     - McCalls 7817 - Jacquard Jacket
     - Cashmerette Pembroke Turtleneck Tunic
     - Velvet Deer 'n Doe Dress - coming to the blog soon
     - Black Ponte & Lace Jacket - coming to the blog soon
     - Cashmerette Rivermont Top - coming to the blog soon

Next...
I have two more shirts in border print fabrics cut out that are waiting to be sewn. They will definitely be on the blog next month. I will also have a lot of time to sew during December due to my Winter Break. Some of the garments I make may show up at the end of December.  But I'm sure more of them will fall into January 2019 cause when I'm on a sewing tear, I just like to sew.

Anyway, it was a good sewing month and Imma take pride in that!  Next up on the blog is the Velvet Deer & Doe dress.

...as always more later!

  1. I love your honesty and acceptance of fabric piggyness so often it is discussed with a sense of shame. The garments that you produce are striking and create love in your heart. The time to stop is when your house is in danger of sinking under the weight. Until then just think if fabric was ever rationed you'd be prepared.

    1. tpotty28 - ummmm I don't care what other people think about my fabric collection! *LOL* You do you and I'll do me and if you only like 3 pieces of fabric at your house...I'm good with that. Me, 3 pieces of fabric would give me the heebie jeebies and make me run to the nearest fabric store! ROTFLOL! So I celebrate my love of fabric because it makes me happy!

  2. Carolyn, I would love to be able to sew 208 yards in a year but I don't sew that fast. I did not buy any fabric during the Black Friday sales but I did buy three patterns. I agree with tpotty28, if fabric was rationed you would be prepared.

    1. Teresa - I would love to sew 208 yards in one year too! Except I didn't - *smile* The reason my out total is so large is due to the donations I made this year. Imma have to count up how many yards I did actually sew though!

  3. Like mentioned above...I can't stand when stashing is talked about in such a negative light. I always say, "well, it's not like I spent my rent money on fabric!" :) But, yet another area where people need to live and let live.

Please, please, pleeeeeeease hurry up and review the velvet dress(!!) and that Rivermont!! :)

Also, oh.my.goodness, I hadn't thought about it that way...there are but 31 days left in this year. 2018 was a doozy for me!!!

    1. Keisha - The Velvet Dress is next I promise! Gotta stretch those blog posts out because right now I'm sewn out. LOL! Also I only have 3 more weeks of work and then I'm off for 22 days (including weekends) so I know I will get some serious sewing done then. And yes girl, only 31 days left and it's 2019!!!

  4. I love your fabric stash and I had a pretty good one before retiring. Heck, I still have a good stash just less. It's your money and how you spend it is yours to do with it what you want. I can think of other things that you could be spending money on that would not give you happiness. I can't wait to see the upcoming blog posts as I am intrigued by the other three creations, particularly the jacket!

    1. Linda - one of my short term goals is to get the fabric collection down. I need more months of no fabrics in though. I'm going to retire in another 7-8 years and I want to have enough to sew and sew for family members but I'm not sure I want all this at that time.

  7. Life would not be the same without your gorgeous creations and zest for owning a fabric stash!!!! Some women collect cook books, some collect Hummels and some collect shoes and bags....but the real magic is in matching fabric with patterns like you do so well, Carolyn! Wishing you a great winter break!

  9. Having this big palette stokes creativity and dreaming and interesting choices. No one tells an artist they have too much paint. Thank you for all the inspiration!

  11. I celebrate having a huge stash along with you. I work everyday so I have a right to buy what I want. DH doesn't even bat an eye when the boxes come. It's sad that some folks look down on those who enjoy buying fabric. I love being able to shop from the stash or a fabric store. The only time that my stash bothers me is when it outgrows its storage space. I just re-did the room which functions as a closet and fabric storage area so I put the spring/summer fabric in some bins.

I did buy fabric just before Thanksgiving and I just ordered from FM this morning :). When I counted up what I've sewn, I estimated that I've sewn more than 100 yards since April. I did finish all of my pre-cut projects. Work has been all consuming so I've haven't been sewing as much this fall. Now it's time to plan more projects

PS I love the jacket and the velvet dress.

  12. Well I am still proud of all you have accomplished this year!! Though your stash may not be where you want, I do recall you have given quite a bit away too. And all the things you have made are beautiful, so I call that winning, lol! Can't wait to see your dress and Rivermont top!!

  13. Thanks! I feel much better about my astonishing stash. Especially as I did NOT buy fabric on Black Friday. (Darn, missed that!) I find that I am missing Fabric Depot here in Portland as it was near my house, but it has been going downhill for a couple years, and finally gasped it's last a couple months ago. Now I have to see about different stores, and what to get where. And go online more. Oh, darn. Shopping.
