This year Fabric Mart bought out all the stock of Rosen & Chadick, a fabric store in the NYC Garment District that recently closed. Rosen & Chadick was an upscale fabric store that started on 40th Street and moved twice after the garment district was invaded by other businesses and the rents increased three-fold. I have fond memories of Rosen & Chadick on 40th Street and the couple of pieces I purchased there along with the garments made. So sorry that I don't have any pictures of those pieces.
Anyway, I was so thrilled to be able to shop some of those Rosen & Chadick fabrics. Especially since Fabric Mart left the original prices on the bolts and discounted them 60%. I need you to understand that these are some of the finest quality fabrics even if it's old stock.

There is shirting, denim, linen, corduroy, chambray, cotton sateen, eyelet and a gingham in the piles.
I know...I know...it's a lot of fabric. BUT the regret from only purchasing 5 pieces last year fueled this year's fabric orgy. As each new garment showed up on social media from last year's campers, my regret grew. Especially since everyone doubled and tripled checked with me to see if I was SURE I didn't want a piece.
This year...no fabric regrets! And yes, I know I'm going to the 5 day Sew Camp in June but I expect there to be new fabric then and more opportunities to own more of the Rosen & Chadick fabrics that are no longer in circulation.
I was also going to go to Zooks Fabrics on Saturday. See they were having a 20% off sale on the entire store and I love their quilting cottons for shirts. I woke up Saturday morning, went down to sew after breakfast and just didn't feel like going. When one of the other Sew Campers asked me if I was going, I said no ~ I was "Fabric Satisfied".
While I would have loved to have walked around the store. I just didn't feel the need to touch and buy more fabric. My fabric tank had been topped off and all I wanted to do was sew!

ReplyDeleteSo glad you had such a good time and were able to buy the pieces that make your heart sing and your creative juices flow. New fabric is so wonderful. I know you have been doing well sewing from the stash but some of these just scream summer and I hope we see a few this summer. My challenge has been to sew a mix of stash and new and that has been working well. Don't you just love how cotton sateen sews!?
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like an absolutely wonderful weekend! I really do feel that you must expose your mind to new stimuli when it comes to the artistic and creative crafts, and that means acquiring new inspiration from time to time. Purchasing patterns from time to time falls under this category, even if you don't use them, they spark something in your creative mind. Same with new fabrics, or a painting, or something in a really unique color that sparks an idea, etc. It isn't all just about only purchasing that which you're in need of. Artists have always acquired things that give them inspiration, even if they do not directly contribute to the artwork in any way other than as a concept. You do you babe!
ReplyDeleteLOL. I don't blame you; I remember Rosen and Chaddick and they had beautiful quality fabric. My favorite fabric store was Trebor also on 40th, which didn't manage to hang on as Rosen and Chaddick did. I still miss them. Enjoy your new fabric.
ReplyDeleteOMG Trebor was my FAVORITE! The table of sandwashed silks that they had right in the front when you walked in was my all time favorite fabric to buy. I may still have a piece or two left in the collection! ;) They went out of business because the sons did not want the father's business. I was in there so often touching and feeling (it really brightened a bad day to stroll through the store) that he told me he never thought that by encouraging his children to go to college and seek other professions that he was ending the family dynasty. I REALLY missed them when they closed down.

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun weekend! I had "found" Zooks last fall and came home with three bags - that being after I had visited FM and had three bags in my trunk. Good to know that you like their quilting fabrics for shirting. I now have four basic pattern that fit, so I'm ready to sew, and of course, to buy more fabrics! Mary Jackson
ReplyDeleteMary - I will be visiting Zooks when I'm there in June. The array, display and amount of cotton fabric is just AMAZING! I may have not bought anything this time but I definitely will next time! Also I so understand the three bags!

ReplyDeleteI was so happy that I finally got to meet you! Your fabrics are beautiful, and you always look great in black and red prints. My son Patrick was horrified when he cleared out my trunk, but when I told him what I'd spent, he just said, "What a bargain!" I'll be sewing until I drop for the next few nights here. I'm sure I need new dresses for my other little granddaughter's birthday party!
