A Roscoe Dress or Top?!

This post has a backstory but let's start with a picture first.

So what happened was...I did not make or sew this Roscoe. Grace (@wzrdreams) made it. She made it last year before her breast cancer diagnosis and while she likes the style, it was a little too nightgownish on her. After several discussions, I told her I would take it. So I traded her some selvedge denim for the dress.

I'm sure you're wondering why I would take a dress that someone else has sewn. Well I've loved this dress pattern since Kelly designed it BUT I thought I was larger than her pattern sizing AND it was a PDF pattern only. Then two things happened, I lost weight and Kelly started selling paper patterns. I snatched one up in a sale but stalled on it because I wasn't sure how I would look in the dress.

So having an already well-made dress (Y'all Grace can sew and her dress had her "Restless Grace" tag in the back too!) to try on and decide if the pattern would work for me was worth the trade. Now you're going well Grace was diagnosed a year ago and you would be correct. When I got the dress home, tried it on, I wasn't quite sure it worked for me as a dress either...so it sat for a minute.

(Grace made this in a size 16)

(Ugghhhh that face!)

(Bootylicious!)

Spring came and the trees started to bloom. Every year I want to photograph a make under those blooming trees. Especially since I'm blessed enough to live in a townhouse community that's well landscaped and everything blooms in waves.

Then I found a pair of white denim jeans I really like and it seemed like the perfect time to cut the dress off and make it into a top. I'm so grateful to my daughter who took these pictures and even scoped out the spots the day before so I could have the pictures I wanted.

May I stop here to say I KNOW this is frivolous...caring about the trees in the background of the pictures. I also know I'm very blessed to live in this community. Because once it gets green, we just walk out the front door and take pictures with an amazing background without any effort. Now that I've gone through that long-ass introduction...

Here are the pictures ~

(This is my favorite tree - you've seen it before
and you'll see it again this summer)

(Different tree & a back shot)

I will be making a Roscoe top of my own using a blue sandwashed silk from the collection. In the meantime, Imma wear the heck out of this one. So tell me, have you used this pattern?

Oh and we photographed two more pieces so more new garments are coming to the blog! Alright that's it. Drop a comment if you like my new Roscoe that I didn't make! LOL!

...as always more later!

  1. Love the top as a top on you. And thank you for taking to the time to get the gorgeous back drops to your photos. The trees and plants are spectacular. It makes our greenery (WA state) seem dull in comparison.

  6. I love your background trees. Enjoying God's creation is never frivolous! Sometimes just a walk in the trees soothes my soul. That said, I really like the hemline you put on your blouse, it makes it shine.

  7. A back story where sewing bloggers trade and rosy dresses become beautiful spring blouses under blooming trees. I love fairytale endings!

  8. You made a great decision in cutting it to a top!

Cherry blossom season is my favorite, I can understand you wanting the gorgeous trees in your photos!

  9. My adult daughter who is skating around the edges of "getting back into sewing" is constantly cutting off a dress bottom for a blouse. Hey if it gets her back into the art, do it! Your renovation looks tremendous! Trees too!

  13. Top yes! Dress, no. But if you lost the flounce and sewed it up in some "punch you in the face" fabric, it might be, dress, yes.

    1. I would have probably never made the flounce anyway and if I do make the dress it will definitely be longer and w/o the flounce!

    1. You know I would have never thought that a size 16 would work for me so it's astounding to me that even now that I've gained the weight back that this still works. Thank you for trading!

  16. Are you kidding? I am all about the trees. I just need to get in front of them to take a photo now and then. I love cherry blossoms (mostly the ones that aren't so pretty that smell soooooooo nice) particularly, and then the rhododendrons..... I just love spring. I'm spending a lot of time in my yard this year as it occurs to me we won't be in this house forever, and I love my yard, I'm grateful I have a yard....you get the idea.
So please, enjoy the bounty we are surrounded with. And I love this blouse on you. This is all about gifts, isn't it?
Thanks for this one from you!

  17. The trees are gorgeous, and your top is so pretty. I like that style on you and that color is just yummy. Maybe you should wear peachy pinks more often.

  18. I love it as a top better than a dress. Those pink blooms are gorgeous!

  19. The dress was so nightdress-y its difficult to imagine it would turn into such a fabulous top especially with the white jeans. Loved your spring photos keeps the hope alive as we move towards winter!
Frivolity is extremely necessary as it makes us happy and our being would be much the lesser without it. Long may you continue to spread the joy.

  20. I love your Roscoe (and I love spring)! I made one and 'sized down' two sizes. I made mine in a flowy rayon and the size is lovely - although I wouldn't go smaller. Your blouse looks perfect on you, what do you know of the sizing?

  21. The top, the trees and you are so pretty!! Thanks for taking the time to share your wardrobe in such a lovely setting and with such nice styling! Your daughter seems to bring out the best in you. So beautiful!!

  22. Love your new top, and actually I liked the dress but maybe just in a different fabric and without the frill/flounce. The beautiful trees are a win, and a lovely lady under them, totally a win

  23. I definitely like this top over the dress on you - the color looks good, the top is just the right length, and it's nice to see your smile in such a lovely setting! I'm really looking forward to your match of fabric with this pattern. Kudos to you and Grace for extending the life of a well-made garment and making it your own.

  26. I like it better as a top than a dress, with no insult intended toward Grace. And the color is wonderful!

I'm with you on loving the trees. That's one thing my yard has in abundance: trees. Big trees, little trees, flowering trees, whatever. It makes for a much nicer place to live. And it gives you such consistently wonderful photographs!
