Where Have I Been?

I posted back in late August that I would be having surgery in the fall.  Then I moved, set up a new sewing loft, unpacked the millions of yards of fabric I own, and attempted to sew my first project in the Sewing Loft.

Honestly I thought I would get back to the blog to post an update before I headed off to surgery. However, things did not go as planned and I ended up doing a lot of testing prior to the day of surgery.  After I had surgery, the next 16 days were a blur.  Major surgery is a butt-kicker for sure.

I ended up having a total hysterectomy.  Precancerous cells were found in biopsied cells from my uterus. I'd had surgery earlier in the summer, when NJ finally opened up from lockdown.

To insure that I would not get any gynecological cancer in the future, I agreed to a total hysterectomy. My recovery has been interesting but I'm alive, back and feeling more like myself than I have in months.

I'm still in the recovery phase but I've allowed my daughters to go home. They stayed with me day and night after the surgery. I'm going to start walking around at lunchtime later this week to gain some stamina back when I will finally be allowed to climb the stairs to the Sewing Loft. I need the peace of spirit I find when I'm in the Sewing Loft.

Scarves and a blanket for the family

There hasn't been much sewing desire here but I can feel inklings of it returning. However, I have been crocheting like a crazy old lady to deal with stress and to have something creative to do.

Since I received a few emails, DMs on IG and messages here, I wanted to provide an update.  There will be more sewing content now that I'm on the mend.

...as always more later!

  2. Sounds like you've been through a really rough patch. Glad to hear that you are on the mend. Six to eight weeks of recovery is pretty normal after a hysterectomy but some take longer. Thanks for the update.

  9. Glad to hear you are recovering. I’m going in on the 2nd December for the same operation. I had pre cancer cells as well. A bit scary but really the only option.
Good luck with sewing and I look forward to seeing your projects

    1. Mandy - I so understand! Because they biopsied my uterus and ovaries so I have to hear back from the Dr if they found anything. I will tell you to pray or hold onto whatever you believe in. It will help you make it through. You will be in my thoughts next month.

  13. Thank you for letting your fans know that you are well and recovering. Good wishes that all continues smoothly and that you’re soon laying down 10,000 stitches a day before too long. (Sounds like so much more fun than 10,000 steps!!!)

  14. good to hear you're recovering well Carolyn. Think of all the future sewing projects you can plan! I look forward to seeing your new makes as soon as you're well enough to get behind the sewing machine again. I had a hysterectomy 8 years ago, the physical recovery was quick but I just felt tired for months.

  17. Oh, Carolyn, I'd forgotten that you were having surgery so I was quite concerned when I didn't see a post from you on my daily checking. So glad you are on the mend and so happy your daughters were with you in these past weeks. Take life easy and I look forward to see your creations when you are able. Karen

  21. Great to hear from you. Glad you are feeling better, realizing that it will still take some time to get back to 100%. All of your long time blog followers, including me, are thinking about you. Stay safe and take care of yourself.

  22. I’m so glad you’re on the mend. Recovering from this surgery takes a lot out of you, so please take your time. I remember my surgeon telling me the body uses about a thousand calories per day just to heal, and feeling wiped out walking from one end of the house to the other, but you will be back to “normal” soon. Wishing you good health!

  23. Good luck with a speedy recovery! Glad to hear you are feeling better.

  24. Yes, I wish you a speedy recovery, and I also wish that you won’t be tempted to push yourself physically too much. If you have a choice to “underdo,” I hope you will do that: do less. You will still progress and be happy with the results and your healing will be solid and durable. Don’t ask me how I know, you don’t want to hear it! Best from

  29. Carolyn,

Thank you for the update. I have missed your posts! I'm glad you're taking it easy and recuperating as your body dictates. A total hysterectomy is a big deal.

  36. Yay! You're back! Having had the same surgery myself, I can absolutely "get" the recovery. Delighted that your physical and sewing mojos are returning. Keep us posted when you feel like connecting. And be gentle with yourself, Carolyn.

  37. I don't know how it is that I've become so fond of you by just reading your blog, but I am fond of you and missed you while you were not in touch. I am sorry about your health difficulties but glad to hear you are on the mend. Yes major surgery is MAJOR. I've had 2 C sections in my life and recovery afterwards was slow with odd symptoms. I look forward to hearing more from you now and I am really glad you have a good result and a wonderful sewing loft to look forward to. Sewing is therapy for me too. I've learned much from you about sewing and life too. Be well, Caroline.

  38. I'm so glad you have your daughters close by and they are with you in your recovery. My daughter is so dear to me I wish she was closer too. Soon you'll be playing with your granddaughters and posing for pics outside in the Spring sunshine. Take care, go slow, feel hopeful.

  39. Thanks for the update, I've been wondering when the surgery was to be or if it had gotten caught up in the postpone elective procedures due to covid crap. Not sure if this would be considered elective though? I'm glad you are doing well, when I had surgery (not same thing as you), it took me a couple of months before I really started to feel normal. Until then, sooooo tired, no stamina, not to mention the expected aches, and afraid to sneeze or cough.

The blanket and scarves are pretty. It's good to have another hobby that doesn't require sitting at the sewing machine and bopping between that, the cutting board, and the iron.

  40. I'm glad your back. Please take it easy and do what they tell you to do...

  50. Glad you are getting your stamina back, or at least the desire to get up and move, such a good sign. Thanks for the update. It's great to hear the removed the potential future home of those nasty C bugs and you are doing well. Take care, stay safe and crochet away!

  51. Before you know it, you will be at your regular self... I myself went thru that surgery at a younger age and could not believe how it affects you - at the 5 week mark you will see the change. Take your time healing :)

  52. I had the same surgery years ago and I can tell you it's a kicker. It took me longer to feel normal than I had anticipated. Be good to yourself and rest when you need to. You will get stronger but respect your body's need to heal.Crocheting might be easier for a while and keep your creativity going. So many are wishing you well and look forward to hearing about your sewing journey.Feel better soon.

  53. Carolyn, so glad to hear that you are recovering and that the desire to sew is returning. I too crochet when the sewing mojo ebbs. It seems to recharge my creativity somehow. I am partial to variegated yarns as there are no decisions about color but the color keeps changing keeping me engaged. Take care of yourself!

  54. You will be glad to be rid of that no-longer-needed uterus! Best wishes. Sue
