Get the Pleat Outta Here...

I love pleats! Simply adore them...and usually I try to incorporate them in a way which flatter my shape rather than not...

Here is a flatter:

See how the pleat flutters gently around the hem skimming over all of the important parts...

And here is a don't:

See how these pleats accent a body part and makes it look unflattering...

That's what the "Bring It On" dress does...it accents a part that just does not need that attention...

This afternoon, I got a fleeting idea of how I can fix this mess...so hopefully I will get it all unpicked soon and reworked...

...and trust me...this dress looks waaayyyyy better on the hanger than it does on me!

  1. You have some beautiful clothes and know how to dress for your figure. I'm sure you'll figure out how to fix the dress.

  5. What a great illustration as the placement of design elements and one's figure. If you've got a plan for that dress, go for it!

  7. the first dress is great.
Well, the second one is ... something else. Maybe it is the combination of dots+pleats? I hope you can fix that and have a beautiful dress at the end, the fabrics and you deserve it ;-)

  11. I totally love the top dress! The super-dropped waist is very flattering on you. Nice eye!

  12. The top dress really works for you. The bottom one, not so much. Since you do a lot of experimenting you're bound to run into problems once in a while. I am interested to see if and how you fix the striped dress.

  13. Great post, Carolyn. I love the first dress and can't wait to see the changes for the second one. I recently did a similar comparison with two muslins made for my nieces prom dress. I'm so glad she went with the second pick. It's perfect for her body type.

  14. Are you sure it isn't just the length of the second dress? Cause at first glance, it just looks too long....

  15. Your experiences help me learn - even when they don't work! You look great in the first dress. I look forward to reading about the changes to the second dress.

  16. I agree the first dress looks better on you, but because they're both printed, I can't see the pleat that well. The b/w fabric is beautiful also. My 2 cents opinion is that the b/w dress is too LONG and the proportions aren't as flattering. The pleat may not be flattering either but I can't see that.
That's it from the peanut gallery.

  17. Ok, so since I don't seem able to leave a comment on the latest post, I'll leave one here:

I SO totally want to see the new Star Trek movie too, and am all p----d off because my bf (who I've lived 3000km away from for the 2 3/4 yrs of our relationship - until the end of this month when I move back to my home province) saw it without me last night. My only response to him telling me he was going to see it was "YOU SUCK!". I really hope I can find someone to see it with before I move. Love love love that they've kept the original feel/style for the costumes!!

  18. p.s. I think I have just "discovered" what to be for Halloween this, and "boldly go" where I have not gone before - either one of those female ensigns in a minidress, or the green alien girl!

  20. I presume you have disabled comments on your latest blog because someone didn't respect your wish not to leave weight loss comments - what a shame. I hope you had a happy mothers day with your family. I am a Brit living in New Zealand but love to keep an eye on what Michelle Obama wears - she has such great style, not seen in a first lady since Jackie O, IMO.

  21. Happy Mother's Day. As an Australian I was really fascinated to read your paragraph about Michelle Obama and fashion retailing. We don't see much of the First Lady here, but what little we have seen shows her to be a very stylish and beautiful woman. I'm sure her choice of fashion wear is made to back up the message that President Obama is giving the rest of the country. I know that times are tough, financially, all over the world, including here in Australia, but I can't help but feel a sense of excitement when I see what President Obama is doing. I read an article yesterday about how he plans to tax business who make money offshore, thereby encouraging manufacturers to produce their goods in the US and consequently employ more Americans. An owner of one such business said that he was shocked that President Obama was doing these things. He said "I thought he was just saying these things to get into office but he really means it". A president who means what he says and follows through! What a wonderful thing. If you are of a mind, I'd really be interested to hear your perspective on the general mood in America.

For the first time in I don't know how long, DH is willing to go to a movie - AT THE THEATER ! So, I think we'll be seeing Star Trek this weekend. I hope it lives up to the hype.
