Crazy for Barbie

I don't know about you but I love Barbie.  Even as a grown ass woman - I love Barbie.  I still remember the first one I received as a little girl...she was a Malibu Barbie with tanned skin that was darker than my own and with long silky blonde hair.  It made me want to be a blonde long before Mary J. Blige dyed her locks blonde.

As I stated in an earlier post, I've finally become Pinterest obsessed.  One of the boards I found was "Crazy for Barbie."  I'm following the board and love when the owner updates it because she "pins" the most amazing Barbie dolls and outfits. They are just truly awesome.

Then Coach Leatherware issued a Coach Barbie...

You know she's already been added to my Christmas List! *LOL*  Cause I am a grown ass woman who loves Barbie!  To prove it, here are a few of the Barbies who occupy my sewing room...

I'm sure part of my love of Barbie started as a little girl especially since my first sewing projects were for my Malibu Barbie & Ken and their friends.  See how I tied those two things so neatly together! *LOL*

..as always more later!

  1. Can't handle it - can't handle it. That outfit - those shoes - that bag. How can a doll be much more stylish than me??

  2. I love Barbie, too. Unfortunately I was all grown up before she came along, but my grand-daughter has a few and I made a lovely wardrobe of vogue Barbie doll vintage clothes circa 1958 for her birthday. They were such fun to make although very fiddly. I think the pattern is OOP now.

  3. My first sewing projects were also for my Barbie. I only have two Barbies, however - my original blonde ponytailed one (although my stupid little sister lost her black and white striped swimsuit) and a Snoopy and Barbie that came out about 10 years ago (I'm a Snoopy collector so HAD to get that!)

  5. I so wish I didn't throw out my Barbies when I became too old for them, I had some awesome ones. Lucky I have a daughter who is discovering the joy of Barbie now!

  7. You DO love Barbie, but so do I! One of my most memorable gifts was a turkey box (remember those) filled to the brim with homemade Barbie clothes from my Aunt Maggie. It could be one of the reasons I learned to sew.
Along the same lines, I'm a diehard fan of That Girl- grown up Barbie if you ask me!

  9. I started sewing for my Barbies win I was about 10 years old and played with my dolls until I was about 16, I mostly made them clothes. Then I took my first sewing class in school and realized why I still played with them, and began making clothes for myself. She is a true fashionista.

  10. I started sewing making my Barbie clothes around 9 years old and played with them until about 14. I also made Barbie wardrobes for my oldest daughter who was a Barbie fan. I saw that Coach Barbie and also thought she was awesomely dressed from head to toe. Ahh memories!

  11. Had to redo my post. Way too many typos! I absolutely love Barbie. Like most everybody else, I too started sewing for Barbie and a child and still do from time to time. I still have my first Barbie from 1962! I probably have more than 50. None are in the original boxes because I like to make them new outfits and display them. I haven't displayed any since I moved four years ago but now that you have planted the seed, I'm going to put some on display in my sewing room ASAP. BTW I did receive the fabric and have already gifted some to a friend. Thanks a million!

  12. Thank you for posting about loving barbie so do I. I have a harley davidson edition barbie and a the princess diana barbie. I want more. Now that I have seen others admit it I LOVE BARBIE, she was my inspiration that started my sewing. My barbies had hip huggers and halter tops.

  13. I loved Barbie. My grandmother used to sew the most amazing things for her. The first Barbie's had amazing clothing. Now these special Barbie's are even better.

  14. I'm not so much a Barbie fan now, but was when I was little. I still have mine and my sister's, along with the clothes Mom made and the very few purchased outfits we had. I remember *how* much I wanted the purchased outfits instead of what Mom made. Now that's what I like most about them now - the clothes Mom made.

  15. Whenever I go to Target or someplace they sell Barbie's I always stop and look and I've been wanting to buy one but always thought - how silly, I'm nearly 40 and I want a Barbie doll! I miss the ones I had as a kid. Well, maybe I can go get one now that I know other women still love Barbie!! I feel giddy! I love that Coach Barbie!

  16. I love Barbie. I remember my first one was Superstar Barbie. She was dressed in a bright Pink satin gown with diamond earrings that came in and out. I think many young girls start sewing by sewing for Barbie.
    The coach Barbie is great.

  18. My first Barbie was one of the first Barbies, lol. She had yellow hair in a ponytail, a black-and-white striped bathing suit, blue eyeshadow and weirdly shaped feet. When my own darling daughter was old enough to trust with the tiny shoes and accessories, I tried to buy her dolls in many skin and hair colors. But, in north central Indiana, my planned purchase was prevented by the sales clerk: She removed the black Barbie I had chosen from the counter, tossing it into the "returns" bin by her feet, and refused to sell it to me. I never shopped at that store again. I should have complained to the manager, but I fear it would have been a useless action on my part. Sigh.

  19. I never had a Barbie and I do not remembem their being available when I was young. I did have a Vogue Jill and her little sister, Ginny. However, that Coach Barbie is wonderful and may make my Christmas list too. I collect and sew for reproduction French dolls, Bleuette. She was sold in France from 1905-1960 and her voluminous wardrobe is a peek into French fashion through those years. There are over 1000 patterns - all in French - and the company eventually went to commercially made garments too. I love sewing for them, especially when I can find vintage fabric - scarce in my area, sadly. I do my sewing for them by hand because it is so peaceful. Translating the patterns, not no peaceful sometimes.

  21. I would not be able to stand in the same room with that Barbie she's so put together. I've never sewn for Barbie but I got a couple of patterns some time ago so the girls can.

  22. Once again, thank you for a wonderful blog post. I loved my Barbies and learned to sew because I wanted to sew outfits for them. When I had daughters, and a new generation of Barbie lovers, I sewed a navy blue blazer, gray flannel slacks, and a blue button down shirt for Ken because my daughters wanted Ken to dress like Daddy!

  23. Oh you are to funny!! :)
I use to sew for my Barbie's too...but more so when that long red haired doll Crissy with the retractable hair!!
So glad you were brave enough to share that inner girl in you with the rest of us!!
Now...as I make my way to check out the "Crazy for Barbie" site!!!
    Tah-ta!!

  24. I so loved my Barbie. She was one of the first with her blonde ponytail and her black and white chevron swim suit. I sure wish I had her now. Barbie inspired me to sew fashion. No other doll did that. I got past the dolly stage and starting sewing my fashion mockups after looking at Vogue magazines. I did this till I was fourteen and then started seriously sewing for myself. I miss my Barbie.

  25. I still have my Barbie along with all her clothes. I did sew and knit for her, but the original Mattel clothes had hand sewn hems, linings, hand-picked zippers, unbelievable details. It would be interesting to compare the workmanship between the clothes from the early 1960's and today's limited edition designer clothes.

  26. Oh, how I love Barbie! I also learned to sew by sewing my own Barbie's clothes when my Mom refused to do it any longer. :) I've also collected Barbie over the years. I had to add this Coach Barbie to my wishlist! Thanks for sharing!

  27. I still have my first Barbie - the one Bunny described with the black/white swimsuit along with one with a "bubble" hairstyle and red swimsuit. They are treasured dolls along with all the outfits I sewed them as a young ten year old. My grandma taught me how to make newspaper patterns and seek out fancy fabric scraps from adult seamstress ladies in my area. Such fond memories!

  28. I thought I was the only one. Tee Hee. I have Barbies posed on top of my dresser. Like you, my love for Ms. Barbie started many, many moons ago. Thanks for including the link to the Pinterest board. I'll check it out today.

  29. I bought the 40th Anniversary Barbie in the box that is a replica of the original 1959 one. For myself !! It even has the reprint booklet of fashions that came in 1959. People complain that her waist is too small, so that girls try to be overly skinny like Barbie. But Barbie's waist has to be ultra small so that whe three layers (fabric can be bulky) are used for the skirt and waistband, then she will look filled out in her clothes just like a slim-ish girl is who happens to be in the normal range of weight.
