Slipping into July...

Interestingly someone on Instagram said that I'd abandoned my blog, which I thought was fascinating since I have posted blog posts in 2023. I do try to post monthly, however, if I'm not sewing much there isn't much to share.  Especially since I'm slowly stepping back from the sewing community on social media.

My blog has primarily always been about my sewing journey. I mean over the years I've thrown in some politics, books, museum trips and sewing/fabric shopping adventures. But sewing is my blog's focus and if I'm not sewing, just what is there to say?

Also I was primarily a sewist that made garments to wear to work. Now that I only go into the office twice a week, I have MORE than enough items to choose from to wear.  And for the first time in my 50+ years of sewing, the amount of sewing items I own start to overwhelm me if I think on it to hard. So I purchase few new patterns and even less fabric yardage.

Pieces taken from the fabric collection - all from Fabric Mart

However, my sewjo has flared it's head. Since it's a 4 day weekend and I'm off work to celebrate the 4th of July, I've decided to balance my reading with a little sewing.  I pulled the fabrics above because I want a couple more Wexfords and an eyelet Vogue 9299 to wear with a pair of white capris.

I also have a Rifle & Co Hope dress using the extension pack dress cut out.  There's also a very complicated border print Mysostis dress in pieces waiting to be completed. I started this in early June but since I complicated it, I got stuck with the button front panel. Hopefully I will be inspired to work on it this month and finish it up. I think it will be distinctive when it's finally done!

This is my sewing update as I slide into July...

...as always more later!

  1. IMHO, a blog isn't abandoned unless it's been at least a year since posting. More like 2 years. Even then sometimes they come back. I had a 5(?) year gap. But I also wasn't sewing at the time either, IIRC. The question of posting only if you have been sewing (or whatever topic you blog covers) is a tough one. I don't mind at all when people post about other areas of their life, or even totally change their focus. At least I know they are OK, not ill/injured, or dead. And I have the choice to not read a blog post.

I do appreciate those rare last posts clearly saying they are quitting the blog. I suspect that many don't intend to quit, it's often a case of "maybe tomorrow I'll post" and suddenly it's been months or years gone by. Like I did.

You pulled out some very pretty fabrics, I'm looking forward to seeing them finished into garments!

  2. I always appreciate your blog posts and find your choice of fabrics and patterns inspiring! I've made some bright maxi dresses for summer after seeing what you do. Thanks so much! Mimi

  3. A sewing blog doesn't have to be only about what new things you're sewing (and I understand that you probably don't really need to be sewing anything for a while). But you could be inspired by the last MeMadeMay for instance, and talk about what you're wearing or not, changing patterns of needs and/or taste, feelings about the stash 😏, lots of wardrobe thoughts that are not directly current production related..

  4. My hardest clothing category has always been casual without looking like I just survived a shipwreck. Now that I'm retired and have taken up sewing again, I'm finally getting the hang of casual. I started sewing the more work appropriate stuff, realized those pieces were going nowhere - literally. I do have a social life where a few dressier pieces are needed, so that gives me creative relief from the more prosaic casual. Lots of patterns can be "dressed down" from the suggested fabrics/details, and I'm having fun with that. Good luck on your continuing sewing journey. Everyone has the right to restorative solitude. I've always loved your blog..

  5. I love your blog! It highlights your skills, talents and imagination. BUT it's your blog to do with as it fits into your changing life. I hope you continue to share your skills and thoughts, whether about sewing or not, but the choice is yours. Enjoy your holiday weekend.

  9. Jacqui from New Zealand. Great to read a post from you. As for blog posts, while I love reading your posts no matter the content, it is yours to do what you will with it. One of the pitfalls of social media is , I think, a tendency for people to think they know (own) the person, and therefore are entitled to demand what they want from them. I have a blog, which has not had a post since I began full time teaching. I just did not have the time or energy to devote - I’d rather use that limited time to sew not blog about not sewing. Lately I have been thinking of starting it up again as the need to furiously sew is no longer there, rather I am being more considered about what I sew. I reread my posts and I enjoy my opinions of the pattern etc and have found it a useful record (which would be the purpose if I start it up again).

I love the fabrics you have chosen and look forward to seeing them as garments. Thank you for you doing you. Jacqui aka The Demented Kiwi.

  10. Carolyn, I so understand. I am sort of in the same place. I haven't been posting as I had some health issues butt into my lifestyle and I could not do screens for some time. I was able to sew and did get a bit done which felt good. I am now back in the saddle. I found getting off screens gave me so much more time for other things, and I do enjoy other things, particularly my gardening, and family time and there has been a lot of that. We make our choices of how we spend our time and it is our choice. You have made yours and I respect that. To everything there is a season............Follow your heart and you will always end up in the right place doing what is right for you.

  11. I love how all the comments are so supportive. I agree that there is a season for everything. I think I've always sewn that way have admired that you never seemed to take time off from sewing. Your fabric and pattern purchases never cease to inspire me. As do your book recommendations now. g

  12. Long time sewing is not a constant. At least not for me. My love of sewing, fabric, color, planning never wanes but the ability to produce ebbs and flows in all the different facets of my creative process. I love my sewing life but sadly I still have to work, juggle family ...

  13. Always good to hear from you, whether frequently or now and again. We have been through some strange times--and still are--with all of us doing the best we can. You are one of the bright spots....

  14. It's good to "hear" from you and I hope you're doing well. I'll just keep checking back periodically to see what's new with you. Hugs.

  16. Waving and letting you know I'm reading whenever you choose to post. Maybe one day I'll blow the dust off my blog too (and my sewing machines).

  17. I love your blog and I love your Instagram! I also appreciate that as our lives change, our interests and needs do, and if you aren't sewing as much, then it makes total sense that there aren't the number of posts. And to add a comment about your previous post - I too would never pick up romance, but since 2020 it's what I reach for first. I need light, I need hope, I need distraction. I mostly wanted to post here to say - I appreciate you and your skills, and I'm happy to hear whatever you would like to share.
