May's End of The Month Recap

It's that time again...time to take a short look back at what I have or have not accomplished this month...which frankly isn't much. And I can't figure out if this is going to be a trend for 2009 or if it's just a season I'm going through.

Anyway, I finished two garments, The Dreaming of Spring Dress and the Ralph Lauren Linen Dress. I purchased 22.5 yards of fabric this month...at least that number is decreasing. When I looked at last year's totals, I realize that I only made 2 garments last May too...maybe this is a trend. Maybe this is just spring fever...before I settle in to really sew for summer. Who knows!

But I'm not sweating it...I'm enjoying the pieces I did create and will look forward to new challenges.

I've been thinking

**Do you sometimes wonder what your garments would be worth in the retail market? I was on the Sara Campbell website and realized that she is selling sheath dresses from $250 to $328. I make a lot of sheath dresses...does that mean the dresses that I create would be worth that much in retail?

**I need to snoop shop again soon. I need to make a trip to an upscale shop like Bergdorf Goodman's or the Saks Fifth Avenue or maybe some of the designer boutiques on Madison Avenue - and sneak a peek at some interior construction. I need to up my sewing game especially after that invisible zipper debacle.

**I noticed that I'm sewing a lot less this year than I have in past years...and I wonder if its because my wardrobe is full of pretty awesome garments...or am I just lazier this year?!

**Finally I've reached a point in my sewing that I've been dreaming of since my 20s. I now have the time to sew, as well as, the money to spend on fabric and patterns like I want. When I was younger, I coveted the time, experience and collection of fabric of some of my sewing mentors, as well as, some of my sewing friends. So it has always been my desire to be able to work with affordable, quality fabrics making some awesome garments. I think I've finally arrived.

**I recently bought a new Rowenta Steam Generator Iron and I still haven't taken it out of the box. Pointed comments have been made about how long the box has sat there...I guess I need to unbox it.

**Ummm, getting pics in those last few posts haven't been easy. I still don't have a new hard drive...that will arrive in the middle of June. So I took my scan disk card to the local drugstore that develops pics and will also give you the pics on a cd. I took said cd to work to upload pics...ummm...since we've moved to flashdrives for everything...no cd tray. In the graphics department, a friend transferred the pics from a cd to a flashdrive. Finally, they got loaded onto Flickr and then the blog. Convoluted yes...was it worth it? YES! Cause seriously how can you show a garment without pictures?

The Dreaming of Spring Dress

...is finally complete!

1.5 yards ltwt yellow wool crepe from Metro Textiles
1/2 yard of floral yellow silk georgette from Fabric Mart (this has been marinating in the collection for several years!)

Notions:
2.5 yards of vanilla lining from Ebad Fabrics
22" invisible zipper
3 yards of a lace hem tape
2.5 yards of lace trim
2 yards of silk organza

All of the construction details can be found in these posts from March! Yikes, this dress has been sitting for a minute! This was a very involved dress with alot of construction parts...and as you know it was held up by the invisible zipper insertion but it was a great dress to wear to work! It's actually the first dress in the Sunshine Yellow Dress and Jacket Collection. So I guess I did work on some of the collection last weekend after all!!!

However, there is a huge oops with the insertion of the invisible zipper:

After I put it in and discovered this, I just wanted to cry. After all of the work that went into the dress, the thought of ripping out the zipper was too much for me to bear. I KNOW I should take it apart and redo it...I just CAN'T! I keep thinking that if I had used a centered zipper this would not have happened. So, I will wear this dress with my little white jacquard jacket...never to take the jacket off. I will now have to practice inserting an invisible zipper using Els technique.

Fabric Reorg

Another thing I did last weekend was clean up. I had a lot of fabric hanging out in my bedroom and it needed to be removed and stored in the fabric closet. It was clogging up my room and it was just toooo much inspiration in one place. It took a couple of hours to get the spring/summer fabric separated from the fall/winter fabric...probably because of all the touching, remembering and dreaming aspect of it. However, it did get reduced to just one bin:

This bin is chock full of linens, knits and wovens that are only spring/summer fabrics. Now I know that I won't get to all of these pieces before the end of September (about when I wind up sewing summer garments and move into transitional ones) but I couldn't bear to move them all into the fabric closet.

The fabric closet - *sigh* - which is in desperate need of a rework because it is jammed packed. The fabrics need to be refolded and reorganized. That is definitely going to become a project for a 3-day weekend this summer. It is overdue for a restructure so now I have to figure out the time to do it. So besides some sewing...I also did a little organizing last weekend!

The Ralph Lauren Dress

I originally purchased this fabric from EOS to make a skirt...a skirt where the stripes went horizontally...yeah I know but I just can't help breaking the rules! Then I found this necklace at a local store called "Billto" in a new mall that has a lot of upscale stores:

I loved this necklace and it reminded me of the EOS Ralph Lauren linen so I bought it and another version of my TNT dress was born. However, this fabric is a very crisp shirting type linen. After a trip through the washer (hot hot water) and a very hot dryer, it had lost just some of its crisp properties. Even though I love the wrinkles that occur with wearing linen, I really don't like those crisp deep ones. So I underlined this dress with silk organza, to help minimize the wrinkling.

I used an invisible zipper in the dress because I just didn't want to interrupt the stripes. I am pretty proud of the invisible zipper in this dress and I have to give a shout out to my daughter who reminded me of some helpful tips for its insertion. Then I added a lining - a plain old lining no lace at all at the hemline.

Some finishing touches and the dress was done. I love the slimming aspect of the stripes - a horizontal orientation would not have been as flattering! Okay some specs:

It's really just another summer work dress. But it will work well in my corporate environment as I prepare for total color domination that the yellow pieces will bring to my wardrobe! Weekend Wrap Up

I have been sewing this weekend but since I still have no camera software, all photos will be in upcoming posts. For someone who had a sewing plan, I didn't bother to follow it. I did finish up the Ralph Lauren Linen dress - the dress that I started last weekend...so named for the fabric that I used to construct the dress.

This weekend I've been in the mood to finish up all of the garments that have been hanging around, so I've temporarily moved away from the plan. Yeah, I know, right after I got one that I was excited about! Anyway, today I'm completing The Dreaming with Spring dress...I have about 2 hours worth of finishing to do to it so that I can wear it tomorrow.

As always when sewing, the thoughts are racing...and yesterday I realized that I have a color coordination issue. Yeah the thread, zipper, hem tape and lining must all color coordinate with the fashion fabric. And when making the RL Linen Dress, I used three different colors of thread to insure that it all worked together. This is alot of color coordinating during the construction of a garment, especially since I am the only one who will see the inner workings of the dress. But I really can't stand when the threads don't match the fashion fabric. Does anyone else have this issue?!

My other issue yesterday was hanger straps for the dress. I searched through six of my vintage sewing books trying to find the best way to insert one. Before I read about how Summerset included one in her vintage garments, I used to pin my dresses to their hangers. After seeing the dress hangers I've decided to include them in my own dresses. See this is the downfall to not owning any RTW, you can't pull something out of the closet to check it out! So if anyone has any tips on how to insert the hanger straps, it would be appreciated!

However, while reading through the Adele Margolis book, "Fashion Sewing for Everyone," I found this passage entitled, "Anything Goes - If It Worked!"

The comforting thing about clothing construction is that there is nothing sacred. There is just no one way to do anything.

No one way to design. Make rules and along comes some design genius who defies them all.

No one way to sew. New techniques follow new styles, new needs, new technology, new fabrics.

No one purpose needle or pin or thread or iron or anything. There are
specific tools for specific purposes.

Following are some techniques that have stood the test of time. New ones are constantly developing. If you can invent some of your own - go ahead. Anything goes - if it works!

Finally, I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day. A day full of fun, family and good food! And while you are enjoying your day, please take a moment and think about or say a prayer for the men and women who are presently defending our country both here and abroad. Also think about the ones who have come before...we are truly blessed that they and their families are willing to lay down their lives to insure our safety!

Getting Better

Jean asked this question a couple of posts back....

Let me start out by saying that I learned to sew when I was 11 and I never stopped...through high school, college, during my first jobs, back to school, through marriage and pregnancies...I never stopped sewing...so alot of my knowledge is first-hand and through experience. The second place that I gained most of my knowledge was through books. I have a pretty extensive collection that I've been amassing for decades...starting with the Singer Sewing Library.

The internet started to affect my sewing about a dozen years ago when I first stumbled onto the sewing board, Sewing World that eventually evolved into Stitchers Guild...and there were several email sewing lists that I was on from Quiltropolis...which eventually led me to join The Sewing Circle which was managed by Julie Ann.

I made some great friendships on this internet sewing list...discovered JoMars through them...and fabric shopping with friends. Met Colleen Jones (who first taught me about Full Bust Adjustments - FBA)...things that took my sewing to another level.

That's a quick review of my background...what would I recommend today? Patternreview and Stitcher's Guild are sewing boards that have an awesome amount of information and people willing to answer questions any time of the day or night. Podcasts and blogs of some amazing sewists like: Ann, Marji, MaryBeth, Summerset, The Sewing Divas, Phyllis ~ these women have sewing chops and the ability to teach you how to do whatever.

And books and videos...I can't stress enough how far a great sewing library can take you and teach you. My top 10 sewing books are located to the right here and I know that EricaB has written a post on the books she loves.

But most importantly...be willing to learn! Be inquisitive...don't settle...strive to go higher, do better, accept the challenges and the failures and learn from them. Finally...the old saw, "Practice makes perfect!" is so true. If you truly love this craft, you would want to indulge and wallow in it...to learn it to the best of your ability!

Hopefully, all that the internet offers, as well as, the various bloggers encourage you everyday to spend some time with the craft that we all love to do - SEW!!!!

The Sunshine Yellow Dress & Jacket Collection

If you've been paying attention, you will notice that I've purchased alot of yellow fabric this spring. The color really appeals to me because it looks so fresh and new. It has such a cheerful appearance and I believe that by adding it to my wardrobe, it will give said wardrobe a much needed lift and injection of not only color but my personality too!

See, I believe that I've finally constructed enough "corporate-type" outfits and now its time to make garments that are infused with me yet will play well with my workplace standbys. So I've presented myself with a new sewing challenge...isn't that a nice way to say that I've come up with a new direction to take my sewing in! *LOL* I want to create a collection of brightly colored garments to be sewn within the next six weeks!

This is a very basic sketch of what I want to make. However, I know that I want to make three jackets, three dresses and a skirt or two. I'm not making any tops this go round because I have quite a few RTW tanks that will work with this collection. I want to give myself over completely to creating these color drenched garments. As with all collections, the codacil is that I want them to play nicely with each other and what is currently in my wardrobe.

I will do a reveal of the pieces the week of July 4th ~ when there should be a new hard drive in my apt to download pics too!

Hopefully this will give my sewing some much needed direction especially since for the last month or so I've felt a bit rudderless and adrift. I have several 3-day weekends coming up so with my plan in hand, I hope that I will be more productive than I've been of late.

Finally the last part of this challenge is that 99% of the materials must come from my various collections. The only thing I am making an allowance for is some bright yellow lining fabric to go in several of the garments...so I will pick that up from the garment district tomorrow. But that is the only exception. I'm rooting around in the things that I've accumulated and in the much missed words of Tim Gunn...I want to "Make it Work!"

Of course, this whole sewing a collection thing will make reoccurring appearances here so stay tuned!

A Follow-up

There were a lot of great responses to the post, "I wish I did it better!" It is encouraging to know that I'm not the only one that struggles with invisible zippers and I hope it is encouraging to you to know that others struggle with and share some of the same challenges that you have.

Those issues range from cutting out to fitting...and then there were specific techniques mentioned like bound buttonholes, rolled hems and welt pockets. Buttonholes appeared frequently too. As well as working with fusible interfacings, hemming garments and working with knits. Then there were mentions about pattern alterations, eyelets and linings.

However, I did notice one thing in all of the items mentioned...despite the lack of knowledge or skill...there was still a deep and abiding love of sewing. Not once did anyone say, because of such and such a technique, I'm just not sewing any more! There were helpful suggestions given and even questions asking for suggestions on how to perform a task better.

So what I did I learn? I learned that sewing is a journey that we are all taking...and that we are all at different stages of the journey...but our mutual love and passion for sewing is what keeps us on the path. It keeps us searching, learning and trying to do better. It causes us to exult in our truimphs and somehow muster past our failures. It keeps us striving to come up a little higher...and really is there any goal greater than that?!

I want to thank everyone who shared something...for allowing us to realize that we as a sewing community want the same things...and hopefully we will pull each other up and help each other along!

I wish I did it better

...that's invisible zippers...they just don't come that easily to me. I know how to put them in but the order of insertion is contrary to what I know effortlessly when putting in the other types of zippers.

I did put one into the linen dress, I'm presently working on. It is amazing to me that I can add a silk organza underlining, change a design feature or add elaborate embellishments but stumble when it comes to invisible zippers. It is the reason that "The Dreaming of Spring" dress remains unfinished. I can see the friggin' invisible zipper in the back of the dress, have the zipper on hand but have been paralyzed at the thought of putting it into the dress.

However, now that I've inserted this one (with some assistance from my DD), I believe I can finally finish up the DOS dress ~ which needs to be completed and soon or I will be unable to wear it because it will be too hot. I've written out the steps and will leave them on my bulletin board so the next time I can just follow them instead of trying to remember how to get it inserted. Hopefully this will help with my unease and feelings of inadequancy.

So my question of the day is "What techniques hangs up or causes you to pause in your sewing?" What technique stops you from completing your garment or just gives you an extreme case of the willies before you go ahead, presevere and work it out? It doesn't matter how simple or complex the technique, share! I mean I showed you mine...so c'mon show me yours! *LOL* Maybe we can encourage each other to keep trying to perfect those techniques so that we all can get over our stumbling blocks!!!

And Patty, the Little Prince wore the booties to the drs today and my daughter said he was the hit of the office. Of course she took several pics...of course we can't get them out of the camera because her camera software is ALSO on the downed hard drive.

I saw it!

Don't worry I'm not going to give the plot to Star Trek away! I'm just going to say that I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the movie! It had a wonderful plot - there wasn't action just for action's sake. It was there because the story required it and it was in the right amount, integral to the scene. The casting was sooooo right on, that you didn't sit in the movie theatre going, "what were they thinking?" It was just a whole lot of fun and you got so caught up in it, that you didn't realize how much time had passed!

I can't say anything about the costumes. They wore the same uniforms as they did in the original TV series. However, I can tell you that if you weren't a fan of the original series or if you never saw it, don't worry, you will still enjoy this movie immensely!

My friend and I saw it in a half-filled movie theatre but that was probably because 9 of the 18 screens at the movie theatre were showing it 15-30 minutes apart. More than convenient. It was really fun and I would see it again! If you haven't seen it yet, I highly encourage you to go and check it out

I'm ambivalent

It's Saturday morning and I'm ambivalent. Usually Saturday mornings find me chomping at the bit to get to my sewing machine...but not today. I don't really know why I'm not running to sew...maybe it has to do with the fact that my cutting table is covered with junk that needs to be moved not just removed from the table but actually put away in to its proper places. Maybe it's also because there is so much fabric around that I am overwhelmed (in a good way) with fabric choices and where to begin. Maybe it's because what I actually want to make, won't play well at work this week? Who knows...I'm just ambivalent.

I am going to see Star Trek this afternoon, so I will let you know what I think later. I am excited about that. Going to spend some time at the stores looking around to see what's available, some lunch and of course the movie. Maybe that's the cause of my ambivalence ~ who knows?!

Updates:

I am tearing apart the "Bring It On" Dress as we speak. I have removed the sleeves and am just working with the bodice. It will resurface soon in a renewed form.

I am part of a special skirt challenge....more will be revealed later! So look for it!

Several weeks ago while at Kashi's, he told me that someone came in with a pic of me holding a piece of fabric that I had purchased. Denise contacted me after I asked about it here...so that's my opening shot today ~ Denise holding up her piece of fabric.

Man Down...

So next...of course it is always something right? My desktop computer's hard drive has bitten the dust...and even though I have a netbook...my camera software was on the desktop. So I will be posting but the posts will be pictureless for the moment...

One of my IT friends will download my camera software to a flashdrive and install it on the netbook but that won't happen until next week and they will also pull the info from my downed hard drive to reinstall on the new hard drive I will have to buy...but I'm putting that purchase off until next month...hoping there will be some good computer sales due to Father's Day.

Has anyone else noticed how necessary PC's are becoming? They are like the telephone to me now! I have GOT to have internet connection! So even though I am becoming the electronics queen...iTouch, blackberry, cell phone with internet connectivity, netbook...I am going to replace the hard drive on the PC...

Okay moving onto fabric matters...

My Fabric Mart box arrived last night which had serious competition with the Lost Finale! OMG - wasn't that amazing how they tied up so many of the loose ends and hit you with an awesome ending! But the part that scared me was the words "Final Season" followed by 2010! Geez, you mean I have to wait to January 2010 and not September to see more Lost! Killin' me...they are killin' me! Oops that wasn't about fabric was it?! *LOL*

It was fun to open the box and see how they all worked together! Fabric dreams, I've got fabric dreams...

An Explanation...

Several days ago, I wrote the post "Bits and Pieces." One of the bits was about something that was at the forefront of my mind, so I wrote about it. I politely asked that no comments be shared about what I had written. I was impolitely ignored, so I shut the comments down.

I would prefer not to delete or moderate comments. My life is just too busy for this censuring process...so closing off the comments seemed the only solution because I am just not moderating what I write on my own blog.

At the time I was extremely upset that my wishes were disrespected. I have written over 500 blog posts...some fluff, some political, most of a sewing nature. It is rare that I don't allow people to comment because I truly enjoy the discourse...even when the comments have been borderline rude. However, this time the presumption of knowing me, supposedly caring for me and offering unasked for advice based upon those same presumptions annoyed the hell outta me!

As Cidell so eloquently wrote, "this is my blog!" Visit or not visit, "ooohhh and aahhhh or not", think what the hell is she thinking and quietly move on...but please, please, please do not disregard my wishes. If you think you know better than me...keep it moving!

I have a newfound respect for anyone who puts themselves in the public eye and it took me a minute to be able to speak on this coherently. I don't think any of us who have sewing blogs wants to discourage conversation or opposing viewpoints. We aren't just looking for someone to pat us on the back or agree with our every statement. We are just looking to share about the thing we love most and a little of our lives and other passions, too.

However, I do believe that the time has come to draw a line in the sand about this disrespectful, mean-spirited and nasty behaviour. Enough with the snarky comments...enough with hiding behind anonymous because you aren't man or woman enough to say what you really feel. ENOUGH!

So as my Mama use to say, if you have nothing nice to say...say nothing at all...and can I add to that keep it moving if you don't like what I'm saying...cause it's my blog and I'm going to talk about what I want, when I want!

Bits and Pieces

I've been away for a minute...partially because I haven't thought much about sewing this week and partially because work has been very, very busy for the last two weeks. It will be a little slower this week so hopefully I will be able to refocus my priorities!

The Bring it On Dress

I am ripping the zipper out, taking off the pleated bottom and adding a solid black base. I think that will make the dress work but if it doesn't...the last step will be to make it sleeveless. I should work on it this weekend. I probably won't. I have a need for some new skirts.

I don't need much dress inspiration...but one great bold printed skirt would make a wonderful Fashion Friday outfit for work!

Weight

Okay, I've been secretly hating on Mo'nique for her weight loss. She is now down to a size 14 from a size 22-24. I've been annoyed because she preached size acceptance so wonderfully and then she went and lost a helluva lot of weight...without making as much noise about it. Well I guess I understand why now...not one but two doctors have told me that I need to lose 50 lbs. 50 lbs totally pushes me out of the plus size range...but medically it is affecting me...so weight I must lose. I don't know how and it won't be on some fad diet that I can't maintain...it will be done correctly and healthily...but I definitely understand Mo'nique now! And can you do me a favor, can you NOT leave messages about weight loss...I am ambivalent about this at best...cause I really like how I look...and I HATE the thought that I've taken the time to construct the perfect wardrobe and will probably now have to do it all over again!

The Michelle Obama Effect

I read this article online, "Can Michelle Obama Save Fashion Retailing?" It was an interesting article but my main thought was...ummmm, she already is! J.Crew, Talbots, Michael Kors, Isabel Toledo and Jason Wu have already been majorly affected by her choices, as well as Mario Pinto. She wears clothing that most women can afford and she wears it well. I would definitely say that her clothing choices are affecting the bottom line in RTW, just like that extra money her husband, Mr. President, added to my paycheck is affecting my ability to purchase a few more things monthly!

Star Trek

It is rare that I want to see a big budget, blockbuster type movie...but I am dying to see this one! I probably will get to it next weekend cause I want to avoid the first weekend crowds...but I just can't wait!!! And they are using the same type of fashions from the 60s - those mini dresses, boots and wacky costumes that were featured in the original TV show...be still my heart! *LOL*

Tomorrow is Mother's Day and I have a family activity to attend to celebrate the day with my own mother, daughters and siblings...so I don't know how much sewing I will get done this weekend...however, I would like to wish all of you Mothers out there a wonderful day tomorrow!

Get the Pleat Outta Here...

I love pleats! Simply adore them...and usually I try to incorporate them in a way which flatter my shape rather than not...

That's what the "Bring It On" dress does...it accents a part that just does not need that attention...

This afternoon, I got a fleeting idea of how I can fix this mess...so hopefully I will get it all unpicked soon and reworked...

...and trust me...this dress looks waaayyyyy better on the hanger than it does on me!

I will take it apart next weekend...*sigh*...because if I don't take it apart right away...it will just sit mocking me...but not tonight...tonight I'm tired and going to bed...

Valentino: The Last Emperor ~ The Movie

Friday Night I went to see Valentino: The Last Emperor with a friend. It was really good and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This movie is totally different from the Chanel series that we all either watched on public television or on YouTube. That series focused more on the making of a collection...there were a lot of workroom shots...and behind the scenes shots.

This was all about Valentino and his career. Yes, you saw a few shots of the work room and the seamstresses, but the movie is predominately about Valentino...the man he was, the man he became, and the man he now is. There are also a lot of celebrities and famous women he dressed mentioned, as well as, featured in the movie...and an entire segment on his 45th Anniversary Celebration!

It is definitely a documentary but it also is engrossing and interesting right up until the end. I even got a little teary eyed at the finish...I know it's in limited release but a friend of mine sent me the schedule...which of course reminded me that I hadn't seen it yet.
