Pattern Addiction

I think I'm addicted to anything sewing ~ seriously! See my heart skipped a beat when I read the notice in my email box that Butterick, McCalls, Vogue and KwikSew patterns were on sale. Luckily I read the email at the bus stop this morning...unluckily the patterns are on sale until Tuesday, May 26th.

Luckily, I didn't have any time to look at my wish list and what was in my shopping cart on my iPad until I got home. Unluckily, the list is pretty long! BTW McCalls, why if I'm logged in, can't my list transfer or remain the same from device to device. I can make three different lists ~ one on my home computer, one on my iPad and one on my iPhone. All different which can get a bit confusing! 

Okay so back to my addiction...I have 12 yes 12 patterns on my list! Why?! I don't need a pattern!?! I have quite a collection! But yet, I'm scrolling through that list trying to determine which ones should wing their way home to me. This addiction has not been helped by the fact that McCalls blogged about the new patterns today with a video - a video! Yeah three of those 12 patterns were put on the list today.

So what is an addict to do?! I came down to the cave to find my special zen place. That place where I talk myself out of buying 90% of the stuff I really want to purchase...and I do the thing that shakes me back to reality every time. I touch the patterns I already own. Peeps let me tell you this is the one advantage of purchasing my patterns online from the comfort of my sewing cave. The ability to access my patterns while I'm being intoxicated by the wonderful and the new! It shuts that desire down with a quickness!

By touching all of those wonderfully pristine envelopes just waiting their turn to become a garment, I'm reminded of my old hopes and dreams. The desires I had when I bought each one of them. And I stop, take stock, readjust and slowly start to remove patterns from my shopping cart.

In all honesty, you and I both know that I'm adding to the collection. However, I'm not going overboard and the list is now well thought out and better curated.

Lori from Girls in the Garden posted about this pattern (Butterick 6051) and I really wanted it. Then Mary on the Curvy Collective posted about making maxi dresses this summer and I've got to get in on that too!  This pattern can make those hopes come to fruition!

This is Vogue 9023 - an empire waist knit dress with short sleeves. What can be a more perfect work dress than this one?

I meant to purchase this one (Vogue 9107) when the new Vogue patterns came out a couple of months ago. I don't remember why I didn't? Then I saw the McCalls video today and I knew that I needed this one ~ especially since I have two pastel shades of silk crepe that will make this an amazing dress. And yes, I plan on wearing it to work!

Culottes are everywhere...and I mean everywhere. I was considering purchasing a Butterick culotte pattern that had an elastic waistline. BUT I'm really digging the fact that this one has a flat front and an elastic backwaist. Also, in a nice flowy challis this will look more like a full summer skirt than culottes and that's the look I really want! So McCalls 7131 is coming to me too!

I don't think I overindulged, hopefully most of these will be sewn this summer! So how about you? Did you succumb to the sale yet? Notice I said yet! *LOL* Or do you have the will power that I don't seem to possess and you won't be purchasing? Inquiring minds want to know...

Can we talk about our pattern collections?

I've been sewing since I was 11 years old and seriously collecting patterns since my 20's.  That's 44 years of sewing and over 35 years of collecting.  At one point in my 30's, I took every pattern I had put them in manilla letter sized folders, labelled them and put them into legal sized banker boxes. Then I put the pattern envelopes in plastic sleeves. The sleeves were placed in black binders and for years I used this system.

I had hundreds of patterns stored this way. Whenever a new pattern was purchased, I added it to the collection.  However, this system became cumbersome to move from place to place and I slowly stopped using it.  Then the pattern boxes were stashed in storage places and the backs of closets.  I rarely touched them...finally my daughter in an act of defiance, grace or better acceptance than myself tossed the lot in the garbage.

That did hurt and I was angry for a minute until I came to my senses.  I hadn't touched those patterns in at least a decade.  Acceptance came but I do regret that they hadn't been donated because honestly I was never going to eBay them or open an Etsy store to sell them.  My daughter's rationale, I still owned hundreds of patterns and they all currently reside in the sewing cave.

Honestly I've cut way back on my pattern purchasing because if I sew 50 pieces a year, more than half are from TNT patterns, the next 30-40% is from a variation of one of my TNT patterns so maybe 5-6 new patterns are actually sewn every year. I'm buying way more patterns than I sew now.

Thankfully I've invested in storage space in the sewing cave so most of the patterns are stored and easily accessible. I have only one troublesome area...where new patterns are presently being "dumped" upon their arrival in the cave. But this drop off place is also helping me to realize that I need to sew more from the stashed patterns and be more judicious with my purchasing.

So let's talk about why we buy so many patterns?  For me, it's the inspiration...the creative stimulation...and the hopes and dreams.  At the time I'm purchasing a steeply discounted pattern, I don't think about if I'll ever actually sew the pattern, or where I'm going to store it...I'm only thinking of the dream.  That amazing garment that I'm going to have a thrilling time constructing and the ooohhhs and aaaahhhs that are going to come when I wear it. Seriously, every pattern I've purchased, I've imagined it sewn up. Can't see a possibility for it, I don't plunk down the credit card for it. So what is it for you?

Why do you buy patterns?  Why do you hold onto patterns that you bought years ago and have never used?  Do you have enough storage space for them or are you just jamming them anywhere?

No fabric buying so I buy patterns instead...

Let's be real.  I'm not a big Simplicity pattern owner or sewist.  Most likely because Simplicity hasn't learned the value of a good online pattern sale the way Butterick/McCalls/Vogue has.  I'm sure I own so many of their patterns because of BMV's amazing sales...but back to the topic on hand.

So over at PatternReview, they are running a sale on Simplicity Patterns for $2.99 each through midnight tonight EST.  Sorry about the short notice but I just read the email late last night/early this morning. Which was enough to make me partake, especially since they've included the Early Fall patterns in the sale.

A Sewing Weekend...

Some thoughts before I sew...

• This July wasn't a normal July for me.  It started out with me having to put my sewing room back together which of course messed with my sewing mojo. Then I spent a lot of time at work, so my mojo became a victim of my tiredness...okay I had NO sewing mojo.  A clean revamped sewing room, but no mojo.
• Then I thought of this great idea to give away fabric and not purchase any more for the remainder of the year. Can I tell you that I went back and forth over that post several times before I finally posted it.  Really! It's kinda scary to pledge that you won't buy any more fabric for the rest of the year AND then on top of that pledge to give 20 pieces away.  So when I finally posted this crazy idea, the reaction was almost overwhelming.  Seriously, I closed the comment section with 366 comments.  I think about 10-15 comments don't want to be included but that means people have a 1 in 350 chance to win.  Wow!
• I made four pieces this month ~ two skirts and two dresses.  The dresses are being blogged in August but they were completed in July.  I know I shouldn't be discouraged about my outcome because really I got four wonderful pieces...but you know me...always striving for more!
• For anyone interested, BMV patterns are back on sale for Club Members until Sunday, August 4th. I finally got the Timothy reference to Vogue 8919 because I watched that episode of Project Runway Thursday night. I remember now why I stopped watching this show. There's not as much designing as I would like but there's definitely drama, drama, drama which is probably why I loved The Great British Sewing Bee so much ~ no drama, just sewing.  And I miss Michael Kors...Zac Posen is nice but he's no MK!
• I just finished taping.  Yeah that got old really fast.  I do want to thank Melissa from Fehr Trade for pointing me to her blog posts regarding the dress. It's given me a lot of food for thought but Melissa can I tell you that I won't be thread tracing those pleats!  Girl I have to give you some serious props for that!
• Can't wait for the Fall fashion magazines to arrive! I mean for once I'm sewing ahead of the season. So I want to see if the things I've picked to make compare to what "the experts" are saying are in.
• Oh yeah, I made my fall sewing list...garments to sew this August and September especially since my sewcation starts on the 30th of this month!  There are a couple of designer inspired pieces, a couple of the new Vogue patterns, a vintage Vogue pattern and one from the last rotation of patterns.  Ten pieces which I think is totally doable in the next eight weeks, and all but one (my August Mood Project) from fabric for the collection.

The Last Weekend of July 2013

This morning I was sitting in my newly renovated sewing room bemoaning the fact that I've rarely used it since putting it back together.  Usually the month of July is super productive sewing wise for me, not so much this year, and I'm feeling it. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful that I had the time to get it put back together and I know that I'll get to use it in the future...I'm just missing sewing since I haven't done much of it lately.

I don't know how much I'll get done this weekend either since I have several things that I need to get done.  I don't know about you, but for me, there is no other place I'd rather be than in my sewing room.

Okay I'm totally amazed by the number of entreats so far into the fabric giveaway and the supportive comments regarding my fabric diet.  I'm going to need a bigger jar!!! Although I do need to emphasize a few things...it isn't a true fabric diet because I still get to purchase my monthly Mood allotment. The good thing about the Mood fabric is that it has to be used that month...no lingering in the collection taking up valuable real estate...and it does satisfy that need to acquire new fabric.

My only true concern is going to be the Labor Day sales in early September. Those are usually fantastic so I'm going to have to be quick with the delete button to avoid temptation.  I think it will also help that I'm on vacation that week. Usually when I'm surrounded by my fabric, I'm least likely to purchase, because I can see what I own.

The hardest point for me is when I'm extremely busy at work, not sewing with no prospect of sewing soon. Since I've just come through three weeks of that and emerged on the other side fabric free, I'm hoping to build on that in the future. Now please realize that I'm going to buy fabric again.  I'm just giving myself a little rest and my fabric shelves some breathing room. Although by my calculations, I'm only going to end up losing two maybe three bins of fabric through this exercise. A drop in the bucket regarding the amount of fabric in my collection.

So did you get some of the new Fall Vogue Patterns, in the last sale? If you missed it...you're not alone. Vogue Patterns has come up with a new marketing tool. On the last day of the $3.99 non-Club BMV members/$3.19 Club BMV members pattern sale, Vogue released a limited number of the new patterns.  

Now this isn't the first time they've done this!  Same thing happened during the last pattern sale. I wasn't as busy at work during the last pattern sale and was able to get all of the patterns I wanted. It probably also helped that I didn't like the last collection as much as I like this one.

I want to stop here and say that this new collection won't be for everyone...but it works soooooo well for my corporate lifestyle. There were quite a few spectacular dresses, a couple of great suit wardrobes, a men's coat pattern and a few interesting Marcy Tilton patterns. Again, not everyone will be happy but that collection, made me decide that I want to start sewing fall right now.

There are plenty of wonderful spring/summer outfits in my closet to finish out summer. If I get the desire for a new summer dress, I can always sew it...but I'm pretty much sewing fall after this dress I'm currently working on...and I made that decision based solely upon the new Fall Vogue Pattern collection. Yes, it was that good to me! You can check out the Fall Lookbook on Vogue's site or the patterns at regular price. Just wait for the next sale if you decide they will fit your lifestyle. 

So you're wondering if I got any patterns this time, right?  Well I did. I was on the bus coming home, stuck in traffic because a truck driver inconsiderately rolled his truck in the middle of the afternoon. I pulled out my iPad realizing that it was the final day of the sale and maybe Vogue Patterns had listed the new patterns. Anyway, I pull the site up and my mind gets blown. There were still two pages of patterns up and I picked out 12 that I wanted. By the time I got home, I was only able to get 8 of my original 12...and when I checked the Lookbook I realized that even then, I'd only seen about 2/3rds of the collection.

Again let me state that this collection is probably not for everyone. It just really works for me!  Here are a couple of the patterns I still want:

Really I've Sworn off eBay

Truly I have!  I had to work hard to remember my sign in because it's been that long since I was on the site.  I can find way too much junk to be sent to my house from there.  Lately since I've seen a couple episodes of Hoarders, I'm rethinking how much stuff my home can actually hold!  Egads that show gives me the skivvies...besides the fact that it annoys the hell out of my that they are exploiting people who obviously have mental challenges...but I digress.

So how did I end up on eBay?  I went looking for an out of print Calvin Klein Vogue Pattern.  Now why did I do that?  Because you know I never found the dayum pattern...instead I found 10 patterns!  *sigh* Yeah I know but they were ten of those working women patterns that Vogue did so well in the 90s.  My mind started whirling and before you know it, I'd hit "buy it now"

Well they arrived yesterday and I'm actually kinda thrilled.  I want to sew four of them right away...and I can make them up in spring/summer fabrics which is even better!  I did escape with only those ten so I count myself lucky! *LOL*  Now I've gotta forget that log-in again 'cause I don't want to end up on a future episode of Hoarders...

Reflections on a Saturday Afternoon

These are just a few things roaming through my brain...

**It's December 1st.  There are only 30 more days until 2013 and my sewing vacay!  Yes!!!  Last year since I planned the cruise and took off two weeks in late August so I had to forego my winter sewing vacay.  But this year it's back on!  So of course, I'm already planning what to sew during my 9 days off from work!

**The Vogue 8824 dress is very similar to a dress that I made in 2011.  I was knocking off a DVF dress and used my TNT dress pattern to recreate it.  Here is my version:

...and these are the differences between my amateurish pattern drafting skills and what the professionals did to make this such a great pattern...

• The darts at the neckline on the Vogue pattern are ingenious.  That's what my version is missing and what helps make the Vogue dress lay flat at the neckline and not gape open. 
• Honestly, my dress hangs a little funny at the front.  Probably because I added a seam down the front to get the v-neckline when the V8824 uses a place on fold application.
• I also think I made a better choice material-wise with the V8824 dress.
• My version is unlined.  The V8824 dress has a lining which I think helps with making the dress hang better.
• Finally my version has a zipper...the next V8824 dress will have a center back zipper.

**During the Black Friday after Thanksgiving Day sales, I bought the Colette Anise jacket pattern along with the additional download which I printed out and made into a flip book.  Seeing it this way has only made me want to move it up "the must sew" list.  I just have to figure out what fabric to use for it.

**I also bought a lot of patterns (10) during the last Club BMV sale.  In my defense, I was waiting for a good sale and had a wish list full, so ten new patterns showed up on Thursday.  You know how pattern purchasing is, you may or may not see them made up anytime soon so lets just leave it at that okay?!  *smile*  

However, I did purchase three little girl patterns for my one and only granddaughter.  I've decided that I want to make her some things for Christmas, so that's what I'll be working on for the next couple of weekends.  Here's what I got to start working on a wardrobe for her...

**This weekend, I'm working on two relatively easy projects.  A skirt using one of the Mood border prints and the lined pants for the CIW Collection that I didn't work on during the Thanksgiving break.  Or I could change my mind and work on something else.  I think I'm going where inspiration strikes!

**Also a few more pieces of fabric arrived. *sigh* What can I say?  I'm an addict...an admitted addict but an addict nonetheless! 

So I saw this dress in Dress Barn (local women's chain that carries regular and plus size goods) when I was there last Saturday morning (noticed that was after the Black Friday sales).  Now Dress Barn carries a really good selection of plus size garments, (although the fabrics they use definitely reflects their price points) however, this dress was not made into a plus size version.  

While browsing sewing blogs, MimiG made a sweater using Butterick 5679.  I'd never really looked at that pattern before but after seeing the dress at Dress Barn, I knew the pattern would work for how I wanted to interpret the dress especially the raglan sleeves.  So with my new fabric I'm going to try out this pattern.  Another garment that's not a part of the plan, *sigh* I know!  But I do intend on making several pieces from the CIW collection during my winter sewcation.

You have so many beautiful outfits - I bet you can go a month without wearing the same thing twice. I wear the same things over and over! What is your secret? 

I have a lot of clothes so you're right, I rarely repeat an outfit in a month or two unless I really want to wear something twice. How have I accomplished that? Well about 10 years ago I made a conscious decision to make most of my own clothing. At the beginning, I wore things more than once because it takes time to sew most of your wardrobe. Sewing a lot of TNT (tried and true) patterns has also increased the amount of clothing I own. Once you know something fits and have the time to spend on sewing instead of fitting garments, you can accumulate more faster.  

My second conscious decision was to make things I liked making and to purchase all others. That's probably why you haven't seen a sewn coat on my blog. I can buy that and it takes considerably more time to make a coat. Also I'm kinda impatient and need a lot of instant gratification. This is an interesting principle since I do make pants. So I guess it's what the sewist is comfortable sewing.

Anyway, the simple answer is that I sew a lot and most of it is from TNT patterns. If you're sewing and not fitting, you're accumulating quite a few new pieces.

I know this is one long post but there is one more thing, I would like to thank you all for the very kind and wonderful comments you've left on my last three garment posts.  I'm so appreciative of the fact that you stop by, read my ramblings and then take the time to leave a word of encouragement.  Even if you don't stop to say anything, just look at the pictures and move on...my appreciation extends to you too.  Every visit is important to me because you took the time to come by and check out what that obsessed sewing woman is doing now!  I mean I would still document what I do if no one came around but IT IS so much more fun sharing it all with you!  Thanks again!

My Week in Pictures...

It started on Tuesday when I attended Susan Khaljie's class on "Sewing with Lace" at Mood.  I learned that I still have a lot to learn about constructing a garment using lace and realized that as good as my Trendy Lace dress looks, it could have been a whole lot better!  I saw some friends, Rosie, Clio, Marina and Oona and met a new one...hey Rhonda!  Thanks for reading!

My new Vogue Pattern Magazine came on Wednesday...and then on Thursday (after the sale ended!) the new patterns showed up on the site.  I  only like three of them...

What I want to know how you get your running spaces such a consistent space and length?
I actually don't have a trick for this one. I just try to make the stitches consistent in length on one side and then I mirror the stitches on the other side.  The beginning of the stitches are actually a little crooked because I didn't start our using the tape...they got better after I applied the tape and began to stitch around it.

Actually if you click the pictures they do get larger...but I'm including a close up picture of one of the better ones.  

Please note that by no means do I think these are fabulous buttonholes, they are passable.  There was no way that I could rip out another set of buttonholes without ruining the fabric, so I went with good enough.  I have the concept down ~ now I need to practice, practice, practice so that my technique will improve. 
 
And finally since Hurricane Sandy is coming to town Sunday...there may be no posts for a minute.  I'm praying that it's not as bad as the forecasts are making it sound but I feel like it's Irene all over again...so I will be protecting my sewing cave Sunday afternoon so that I don't lose anything precious...

Hot, hot, hot!

It's hot, hot, hot here on the East Coast.  We are in the midst of a heatwave so I'm hiding in my basement sewing room where it's nice and cool.  Yesterday we had a work function on the roof of a local hotel.  While there was a wonderful breeze blowing, it was still hot, hot, hot.  Then after I left the work function, I met up with the significant other for a late dinner.  All that to say that I'm going nowhere...and I mean nowhere during this heatwave! *LOL*


A few things came in the mail...patterns from Simplicity.  They were running an online pattern sale of $4.99 for their spring & summer patterns.  Since I don't live in Hobby Lobby or Hancock's territory and I don't visit the craft store masquerading as a fabric store, I usually wait for an online sale.  Simplicity just doesn't run pattern sales as frequently as BMV does, so I own fewer of them. However, this is what arrived...

So you know how new patterns always inspire you to want to sew something new or use them right away? I pulled one to keep around because I want to see if I can work on it this week, I mean I do have an extra day off this weekend and I'm not an outside kinda girl! *LOL* As I was putting them away, I stumbled upon this HotPatterns pattern.

I've really wanted to make this dress since the pattern was issued. But in the  back of my creative mind, I've wanted it from a sueded fabric or a moleskin. I have one in my collection that is screaming to be used with this pattern so I didn't have a summer version in mind. But after looking at the pattern again today, I'm thinking I might own a printed linen that would work well with this pattern. Another dress idea added to the list!

Finally, I've started working on my Trendy Lace Dress and my plan for the weekend is to finish it up and maybe move onto the Simplicity pattern...not only is the weather hot, hot, hot but so is my sewing mojo!

I've made 51 dresses from an OOP dress pattern that I've been using for at least a dozen years.  When the new Butterick patterns came out, I realized that if  you're a plus size woman (or even if you aren't) you can now own a pattern that is very similar to the pattern that I've been using forever.


It's Butterick 5706:

...and except for that weird extra long back view, this pattern is pretty close to mine.  The u-neckline is a little deeper, but the pattern includes a v-neckline version, cap and elbow length sleeves.  What really makes this dress a winner in my book is that it only has side bust darts on the dress front piece.  If you're supporting a little extra abdomen like I am, this really is a flattering look.  


For those who don't have the booty issues that I do, there are even back darts for some additional fitting, so you won't feel like you're wearing a great big ole tent.  Now even though I have my well used TNT pattern, I bought this pattern.  I really want to make a version and see how this pattern works...so sooner or later a dress from this pattern will be showcased here...

Not only did the princess seamed jacket appeal to me but the princess seamed dress did too.  I'm sure that if I dug around in my extensive pattern collection, I probably have a princess seamed dress like this but honestly, I was just too lazy to look...especially since this look wasn't in the set of patterns that I've just recently organized.  Anyway, this is the pattern that I want to use for the purple sheath dress I'm feening for.


I still have no idea what I'll be making this weekend...just that I will be sewing! Yeahhhhh!!!
