To share or not to share

Nancyk posted this in the comments a few days ago:

"Are you going to share these 54 yards with us? I know that the spring dress has some of it, but If I remember correctly, only 1.5 yd. I need some vicarious buying pleasure, having been good at only 2 yards."

My first thought was to gather the fabric up and take a picture of it all. I mean there are some very pretty pieces in there. However, my very next thought was "oh gosh, the backlash!" Who would the post offend because they are either out of a job, thinks it being ostentatious, tired of fabric posts, etc...and it made me stop and think...and of course come up with some more questions.

Do posts of fabric purchases really offend readers? Or another way, do you think pics of fabric purchased in these troubled economic times is offensive? Why isn't fabric and patterns treated with the same accord as the paint and canvas that artists use - since we can't make anything without these tools? Why is the purchase of such items almost denigrated?

It's almost like a folder I was reading a few weeks ago on PR, where the author questioned if she should take up sewing because it was turning into a costly venture. I never posted to the folder. I read the responses and closed it out shaking my head, thinking that if you are questioning the cost, this is just not the hobby for you!

But here is the most important question for me? Do I care? Obviously not because Nancy in response to your inquiry...below is the shot of the fabrics purchased during the month of March:

(most of it purchased from Fabric Mart but there are a few pieces here from EOS, fabric.com and FFC)

And here is my postscript...I understand that not everyone wants to read about yet another fabric or pattern purchase. I understand that at times people are searching for a technique or to learn something new. Well sometimes I have that and sometimes I don't - *LOL*

In the last couple of weeks I have finally come to acknowledge that sewing keeps me sane. That sometimes during a hard day, slipping into a fabric site and picking up a few yards helps keep me from ripping someone's head off, verbally or otherwise! *LOL*

But most importantly, this is my spot...where I can talk about the thing that excites me most...share the love, the joy and the pitfalls of my obsession...so if you're not digging the fabric or pattern talk...come by later...I'll be talking about something else then!

  1. Buying fabric is small potatoes to therapy. From reading your musings on an almost daily basis, I would venture to say you will use the purchases - and if you don't, are there fabric police waiting to pounce. On a better note, I like your style and am looking for a TNT dress pattern for me. I rarely wear skirts or dresses, but periodically feel I should have one at the ready in the closet.

  2. We read your blog because we like it, I don't think anyone is seriously offended. I love the fabric, it looks like endless possibilities, although when you posted that picture of your stash it kinda freaked me out but in a good way lol.

  3. You know, I don't come to your site to see techniques. I come to see what you are up to and what you have done. Like a drop in and chat situation. So I am very happy to see the fabric - and I am surprised it is such a small pile...lol. Really the best thing we can do to stimulate the economy is to spend. So it is good that those who can, do. Saving your money only reduces demand, creates unemployment and the situation gets worse. So on that note, I think I had better go shopping now.

  4. Well, it is *your* blog, and you should post what you want to. If it offends someone, they can quietly click away somewhere else that will make them happy. There's something on the internet for everyone.

FWIW, I like your fabric posts - you buy some really lovely stuff and I enjoy seeing what you purchase and what you make from it.

  5. Carolyn, I love looking at your purchases. If you got it to spend, why not? I bought that italian script jersey last year after you posted that you had because I loved it. We don't have it to spend right now, but I am not offended by any of ya'll buying. I just use from my stash and create from that right now or refashion. Otherwise any of my purchases are notions, lining or well-thought out items. I agree with above, it is cheaper than therapy and if it makes you happy, go with it!

  6. I love the fabric posts... it's like seeing old friends I have admired on the web...some of whom have come to visit me too, others whom have not. It's your blog...post what makes you happy....ML

  7. what I enjoy about this whole blogging community is reading the thoughts of everyone out there. Of course my interest is in sewing but this can be in the form of just chatting about it. If you visit a blog you take what you are given, don't like it? Don't visit. I also don't think anyone should feel bad, guily etc about spending during these times. The truth is some are suffering more than others, but if your head is above water your life continues, as does your spending. If someone can afford 100m of fabric I say go for it! ( I noticed some fabric with blue cars, I figure you won't be making a dress out of that. LOL earmarked for a beautiful baby??)

  8. I love dropping by for a musing or a "look-see", whether it's fabric or a pattern or a finished product or a work in progress. Fabric is a blessing, and I know what's in my cupboard so getting a peak inside someone else's is a treat.

And yes, this is YOUR blog, so...

It is kind of you to be concerned about other sewists who may be feeling the pinch of time or money, but I think that most sewists take delight in each other's joy. Your blog is a well to which we come for refreshment. Carry on, sister!

  9. Carolyn,
I read your blog because there are so many different things on it! I love to see fabric, design ideas, patterns and the finished projects!
Enjoy doing what YOU want to do with this blog!

  10. There's no reason for anyone to feel offended. And if for some odd reason they do, they don't have to come by. The way I see it is this is your blog to share, and to say what you please.

Those fabrics are beautiful. My first thought when you wrote about it was "yikes, 54!" But only because I have never made a large purchase like that. LOL, but no I wasn't offended, why would I be?
I know you'll make some awesome stuff with them. Besides, it's your hobby, you can do with them what you want to. :)

Now that I see the fabrics I understand a few things about your purchase. First, when you buy fabric for a project it's always best to buy enough yards to complete it, and not run the risk of coming up short. Another thing is fabrics are alluring, we just give in to their temptation. :):) It's what sewers do, no shame in that. :)

The posts about fabric and pattern purchases are enticing to see because it helps me think of the possibilities. Of what they can become, and how they would look. I enjoy them, keep 'em coming. :):):)

I definetly enjoy coming by and reading about everything you make. For me, your successes in your garments are a go to reference. Even if you don't always show techniques, it's more than ok to me. You show us how something worked for you, and I enjoy learning from that.

    Many hugs,
    Lory

  11. I love seeing your fabric. Hey, we all know that sewing is not a cheap hobby. It is your business how you spend your money.

  12. I just love coming to your blog to see what interesting something you have to write about. That's what makes it fun to read. I love that you bought 54 yards of fabric!! I'm glad you decided to show it. I can't imagine anyone being offended.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You go girl!! It's your blog - you write what you want. If people are offended by anything you write they can shove off! I enjoy seeing your stuff and your wonderful work! Keep it up.

    ReplyDelete
  14. More support from me! It's your blog, you can post whatever you want - and I love your blog for the clothes, the tips, the fabric purchases, the pattern purchases, and because it is YOU! You have a terrific blog, the variety is great, and surely it is up to you how you wish to spend (and which purchases you share). I love seeing the fabrics you buy - it is a vicarious pleasure!

  15. I really enjoy seeing your fabric purchases, the dresses, the grandbaby, everything. You are inspiring and I enjoy reading your blog. And, most importantly, it is your blog, do what you want.

  16. Thank you. Do I spy some pj's for the prince in there? I look forward to seeing the wonderful creations that come out of your hands and head. I love seeing your fabric buys, after all I would never have thought to buy that gorgeous Anna Sui silk that I used to line my coat if I hadn't seen it here.

  17. You bought some pretty great looking fabric. I enjoy stopping in and reading what you're up to :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Personally I enjoy seeing other people's fabric purchases. It's especially fun when I recognize a fabric from one of the online fabric shops. So that's why it's sold out now... :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well, ditto to what everyone has posted!

However, I WANT your fabric. I love the car print!!! It is too cool.

Keep up the good work. I can't wait to see what you come up with on the SATC dress you posted about the other day.

  20. Well, I can see that you are suffering from fabric guilt. I can help alleviate the situation. In a separate message, I will send you my residential address. Tomorrow you may mail all 54 yards to myself (you can send more, if you are inclined). I will hug and caress your fabric while it goes through separation anxiety, and I will incorporate it into my stash. I know, someone has to make the sacrifice, so I'll put myself out there. I'll do anything to help a fellow sewist. ;)

Well, if you choose not to take up my kind offer (is it really 24 hours after April Fools Day?), please do continue posting your sewing and fabric adventures. I'm not offended by your blog: indeed, I'm very inspired to continue sewing, and to continue purchasing fabrics/patterns (although more selectively). You choose different fabrics from myself (I choose mostly knits, you appear to sew mostly with wovens) and I enjoy seeing your projects, since they are very different from what I usually sew. cheers and thanks, Rose in SV

  21. Pictures and posts about buying fabric are inspiration to me. I love seeing what you have bought and sometimes you inspire me to buy fabric that I would not have normally purchased. An example is the yellow fabric. I can't wear that shade but it did inspire me to buy a lighter shade of tropical wool from FFC that I am waiting for.

I did buy some fabric last month but didn't add it up. If I guess, it is probably at least 30 yards and I don't sew as much as you do.

    ReplyDelete
  22. My inner voyeur loves seeing other peoples fabric, sewing rooms, stashes, etc. Bring it on!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love to sew; I love to buy fabric; and I just love you blog. So, girl you just keep on sewing, buying that fabric if you can, and keep on posting on your blog, because I come by daily just to get a bit of inspiration from what you are doing. And PLEase!!! anyone that stops by your blog wants to see what you got, and what you've sewn.

  24. Your blog. Your money. Your house. If people don't like it there are lots of other blogs to read that don't even mention fabric. I like seeing what people buy and make. And I usually post my buys, unless I'm too lazy to do it or decide it's fug after I get it home. (It happens).

  25. I am a "fabricoholic" Pics of fabric are inspirational to me!

  26. No offense here. We all have something that we over or under do. My over do is patterns, I enjoy them and I love them. If it wasn't patterns it would be something else. I do think that every blogger should be able to show what they want to show. The operative word being "Your".

    ReplyDelete
  27. Carolyn, sweetie, you go ahead and post whatever you please - I love seeing what you bought for fabric and patterns, and this is YOUR blog. I don't think it's offensive. It's not like your posting some $400/yard fabric and saying, "Oh, I'm going to make a gown that will be so faaaabulous that I will wear an amazing event and don't you all wish you were moi!?"
    .
    .
    .
Hmmmmm, maybe I better rethink my blog posts ;-)

Seriously, I love seeing the fabrics, patterns, and notions you buy. You know why? Because you obviously get such joy from them and you get (and share) the joy of turning them into something wonderful!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I enjoy reading about other people's purchases - even if I'm not buying anything myself! Although, I have to admit, reading posts about shopping trips usually leads me to make my own! Now I'm off to Fabric Mart! :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love seeing the fabrics you get. Sometimes I am amazed at how similar our tastes are (like the black and white charmeuse you painted...and is that a blue and brown lawn in that pile from FFC? I think I may own the other end of that bolt!), and if someone doesn't like what you have to say, heck with them. That old Anonymous has been making trouble on blogs all over the internet, I see them everywhere!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hehehe. I thought, "Wow! 54 yards!" ... uh... until I totalled up my fabric purchases for the month.

(Let's just say that I, personally, could not LIFT the box from Fabric Mart, and leave it go at that. Random bundles are fun!)

Write about what gives you joy. That's what we like to see.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm in the camp of "if it makes you happy, then do it.." I'm doing ok now but I've also been through periods of underemployment. I was so thankful that I had a fabric stash during those times!!! Don't feel bad about collecting fabric. There are much worse things to occupy your time and money--and girl, you're productive so even less reason for guilt!!

Keep sharing--your work is incredible and you have to feed the kitty.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I just wish I had kept totals of purchases my mother and I made together at a brick and mortar shop! I know we sometimes had trips that totaled more than 54 yards between the two of us. Since I was the seamstress for both of us, the fabric lived (and some still lives!) at my house. So I often go shop the basement first when I "need" to sew and need to sew "now".

Please keep on posting what you want to post. I love to come by and see what's been bought, what's in progress, and what is finished percolating! Thank you for sharing all of it.

  33. The nice thing about the community that you have created here is that we are all in different circumstances and *understand* that we are in different circumstances.

I currently am not in a position to buy fabric. But that doesn't mean that I would be offended that others are able to keep fabric shops in business until I am ready to buy again.

I've been shopping with you. It is an amazing creative experience and I can see how it would keep the people at work or on your commute safe from having their heads torn off :)

  34. Carolyn to save money I turned off my Direct TV service so I do not have a television But I do have all of the good reading on the Blogs which includes the fabric purchases which I enjoy MUCH better. So please do not stop blogging about your fabric purchases because you will surely make me go over my budget and get that darn Direct TV service again and you don't want me to go over my budget do you? Then I will be upset :) Thanks for all of the good reading

  36. Hi Carolyn, I just started reading your blog and I love it. I had to comment here because I wanted to tell you that this is YOUR space and if you want to post about fabric purchasing you should! Plus, I think most of your readers want to see what you are purchasing :-) Happy Sewing to you!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh, please post the pictures of your fabric purchases. I love seeing what other people buy. I can't always afford expensive fabric, but as long as people don't criticize me for purchasing what I can afford, I wouldn't criticize someone else for purchasing what they can afford.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Some people might be offended by the amount of fabrics you purchased, but then, some might be offended as well when they see you with a new outfit! We could all be offended if you were just showing off, but you share with us, your share your joy at creating and sewing, you share your hints and tips, you buy and show fabrics I would not have considered otherwise and give me new perspectives, you explain why some fabrics will work or not for your project, etc
I also really understand that you need sewing to keep sane, and unless you recycle old garnements, you need fabrics.
And last, it is your blog and your life.
    So keep going.

  39. Carolyn,

I have only one issue with anything you posted today. Sewing IS art. It is NOT a hobby like stamp collecting or memorizing the encyclopedia or whatever. The end result of the labour is a piece of art.

Making art requires quality materials. End of story.

  41. Oh, I'll never be offended by fabric purchases! Jealous, maybe, but offended, no way! Think of it as your way of helping to stimulate the economy. That's all we hear about in the Australian press at the moment. The other reason I like seeing other people's purchases is because it inspires me and helps me be creative.

    ReplyDelete
  42. LOL I'm tired of fabric posts, but I'm certainly not OFFENDED. I just won't read past the first paragraph.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well you've really started something here! Basically I love to read whatever the sisters are posting. It is a form of fellowship and like our face to face conversations, sometimes you won't be fully engaged. Keep talking, someone is listening.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hey, at least you have the money to buy. If we all stop buying the stores would close and then where would we be. And, you don't need a lot of money to sew. there's always recycling. I spend very little on fabric. I always ask people if they have something they're not using they can always give it to me.

I need to come back and read this thread later..time to get the kiddies up for school. this is a good one :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love reading posts about fabric so keep 'em coming! Sewing also keeps me sane and if it gives us pleasure to buy some new fabrics why should we care what anyone thinks? We have all cut back but I think it's important to NOT stop altogether - after all, we don't want any of our wonderful vendors to close their doors!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Gosh it never occured to me that anyone might get upset about fabric purchases. I don't think it's remotely ostentatious and your pile looks pretty modest to me anyway. Post whatever you like!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't see a reason to be offended, for anyone. I'm certainly not. What I would like to say, other than it's your blog, do what you want with it, is this: Choosing and buying fabric is, for me, a sewing technique that I can learn a lot about from others, such as you. What is a quality fabric, what are the sources, how to recognise a fabric's "garment potential", etc... These are all things we can learn from your fabric posts!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Keep posting! I get inspired by your fabric purchases - not offended!
There are tons of things more offensive than showing your fabric purchases. If anyone finds it offensive, I certainly hope they don't hold on to it. Life is too short to be offended by someone else's fabric purchases.

    ReplyDelete
  49. No offense here. Love it. Love to see what you bought. But I would hate to admit how much fabric I have (lets say every nook and cranny stuffed w/ fabric). I love to see I'm not the only one who loves fabric. And maybe I don't use it all right away (okay maybe couldn't sew it all in a lifetime). But it's the dream of sewing it that also brings me happiness. Felow fabric buyers unite. Yippie, it's fun.

  50. Carolyn, I love your blog, from the pic of Obama to your baby to your fabric. I'm only offended when I come check up on you and you haven't posted lately (birth of baby an acceptable excuse). As another size 24 grandmotherly aged woman, I am inspired by your choice to wear dresses, and to see a film featuring 30-something anorexic types and saying "I can wear that!" and then doing it! I have gotten intimidated over the years, sewing mostly to try to look "nice", but maybe you've inspired me to uncover my shins and wear a dress (or skirt) now and then!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I do believe that fabric and patterns purchases are an integral part of sewing. And you do have a sewing blog -- how can you sew without supplies. Economic times notwithstanding, you still have to get dressed and go to work. You make your clothes, so you need fabric. I certainly don't feel guilty purchasing fabric or patterns, despite the fact that I have a ton, because my tastes do change. Sewing for me, like you, is a stress reliever. What people often don't realize, is that we don't all spend our money in the same way -- maybe your grocery bill is smaller or your mortgage. I love seeing fabric and pattern purchases -- makes me ooh and aah. For those that are offended or are looking for something else in a blog -- it's a big blogosphere -- they can press on and find one that suits their needs or better yet, write their own blog. So keep on keepin' on. It's your blog -- post what makes you happy.

  52. I buy whatever I please sewing wise as well and it is my business period. I just bought a 730 bernina artista arriving next week that I don't need at all just decided I wanted. It's funny when the economy was good and people were busy consuming flashy vehicles and houses that covered a city block , buying loads of junk on credit cards no one felt guilty about being a consumer when some of the rest of us were scrimping and saving hard to get in good shape and sewing from bargains to save money and avoiding the malls or driving paid up vehicles into the ground. Refusing to ever make vehicle payments gave me lots of upturned noses through the years but was great for us financially as was doing without everything and paying off the home in a short while. I refuse to let anyone rain on my parade if I find joy in buying what I want sewing wise or anything for that matter. It would be sad if even the online fabric places vanished and they will if people quit buying. It is not boom time for the fabric businesses. I love your blog as you are all about sewing for the figure you own with nice fabrics. I even have patterns in the stash that I tracked down and have a note like Carolyn's tnt. No decent fabric shopping is left around here and it is a joy to me to see what can be ordered online(where I will be headed when I have some tnts to call my own). If any one finds offense they need to get a life and visit another blog. mssewcrazy

  53. I've often found that people who are offended by things, that were obviously not meant to be offensive, create their own "victim" reality out of their own insecurities. They will find a way to be offended about anything. It makes them feel special.

I'm poor as dirt and can't buy fabric right now, and lord knows I'm not sewing either. But I find happiness in seeing other peoples' joy and excitement in their own sewing adventures :) That's what blogging is all about!

  54. LOVE your Blog - keep right on posting anything you like !!!

Can't imagine anyone being offended - it's eye candy after all & you can afford it. Anyone that doesn't like it can go read elsewhere.

I thought the pile would be bigger too, 54 yards sounds like it should be a huge stack-o-fabric!

I scrolled down immediately to see if you posted the pic.

And I'm sure there will be finished projects from this purchase soon. That car fabric will probably not sit around long :-) Your little prince is absolutey gorgeous and a lucky little man - it looks like Grandma is gonna sew for him.

  55. Unbelievable that someone would be offended by fabric posts... what gives...

Well for me I loovve it and so much so that after you've posted your fabric purchses... I've kindly tipsied on over to the fabric store may it be brick/mortar or online and indulged gleefully...hehe

  56. I just had to take a 15% pay cut and there is a new baby in my house.Having said that, I have never felt anything but joy at viewing your (and other's) fabric purchases. May God continue to bless you and may you continue to bless some of us who live vicariously thru you!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I love seeing people's fabric purchases because I live vicariously through other people's choices. If that stopped, I wouldn't be as inspired by our online sewing community. I get ideas of fabric I should purchase or figure out where I can get the same cut for my projects. So keep it coming. Like everyone has said, if people are offended they can just close the browser window. LOL! And, it is your money and it's up to you how you spend it. You inspire a lot of us with your ideas!

  58. I have tried about 15 times to write a comment reassuring you that you should post your fabric buys. I even woke up in the middle of the night with the urge to reach out to you and say: Hey, it's OK! Blog writing is so weird: you never know who's reading or what they think unless they tell you. I have said that I don't like fabric purchase posts and mostly I don't but I do loves the cmarie! Any which way...

  59. Carolyn,
I'm the Elizabeth who keeps sending you emails. And I hope I can speak for all beginning sewists. I love all your posts, no matter what the topic. Your blog is one of the blogs that inspired me to start sewing. The information you have packed into your blog has helped me to choose what to buy, where to buy and inspired me. Did I say that already? I can't fathom anyone being offended by fabric posts. I'm sure your posts have generated interest in patterns or fabric that might have been previously overlooked. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who loves before (fabric uncut) and after (finished object) pictures. So keep these posts coming! Love your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  60. It your blog and I love reading whatever you feel like writing. If I didn't I could not read. The same is true for everyone else.

Love seeing the fabric and I know that "slipping into a fabric site and picking up a few yard helps keep me from ripping someone's head off" state of affairs very well. I just haven't posted purhases lately because I haven't posted progress either. But that is my issue.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Well for heaven sakes---if someone is offended, then they can click off. Love the sharing of fabric and all the rest that you blog about! Keep it ALL coming-Corinne

  62. Can I just agree with everyone else :).

This is your blog. The reason I read it is because i'm interested in sewing, I want to see the fabric and the patterns!!! (Who would have thunk 54 yards was so small...). Getting a gorgous baby is just a great extra!

AFAIK, I am at a different life stage from you, I work as far away from 'corporate' as it's possible to do, my body shape is completley different to yours and I live several thousand miles away. So why am I here? Because you are INSPIRING. Even if you are talking about clothes that will never suit me, it still inspires me to go look for my own tnt. The way you use fabrics and draw inspiration from tv/high fashion is pure genius. I am not an artist, I am more of a technician, but I am learning possibilities from you. I'm also just starting to sew, and you are giving me ideas LOL!!

Right now I don't have the money to buy much fabric or patterns, but I LOVE seeing yours! Please please keep posting pictures!!!

  63. I think I can speak for some of the people you worried about offending. I lost my job in September and am still looking. It doesn't bother me that you talk about buying fabric and patterns. I love the same stuff you do. Yes, I have to look at my purchases differently now. But you don't and i love to live vicariously. I have a big enough stash that I could sew for more than 2 years and not buy any fabric. That is what is getting me thru this rough spot. I just buy patterns when they are on sale and I buy notions to finish a garment made from my stash. When I get a job, I will be back to buying whatever and enjoying it. You can't waste time going thru life envying what others have. I would rather spend that energy thinking of a new outfit.

So no, you didn't offend me. And you shouldn't worry about this. Go for it and keep sharing. I love it.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I like so many others that have left comments don't come because you are rubbing anyone's faces in the fact that you have made purchases. I come because I love fabric! And you have conveinent wonderful places to go to make these purchases. And I really do enjoy what you have to say... if I didn't and it offended me... I wouldn't come back! And I really don't think that you are offending anyone. Would you stop buying food and maybe eating on public transportation because someone else there maybe not have any food? Hopefully if we knew of a situation like this we would share or what have you. But all we can do is the best we know how. Sure there are a lot of people who don't really care at all, and have a don't give a care attitude. But, that is also up to them.
Enjoy your hobby, time sewing and life in general. You have earned it, and thank you for sharing it with the rest of us!
Take care and have a wonderful weekend!

In summarizing all our expenses for taxes, I find that I spent about $2,000 last year on sewing purchases! That's up from the year before when my total was about $1,000. I agree that while in total this seems expensive (at least on my budget w/ three teenage boys still home eating!) it's a fraction of what therapy would cost. While I have don't have your talent, expertise, or creativity, I enjoy creating something that has a practical value that won't disappear a few minutes after being put on the table. Sewing has kept me grounded lately. That along with a number of sewing and quilting blogs including yours that provide inspiration, laughter, and a feeling of community. Thanks for always sharing whether it be fabric purchases, techniques, or pictures of that sweet, sweet grandbaby.

    Thanks Caroline!

    Regards,

    Teresa

  67. Omg, I have been reading and commenting on your blog for maybe 2 yrs now. In that time, we have gone from being fairly well-off to absolutely dirt broke, behind on the mortgage and worrying about keeping the electricity on and literally counting the coins in the sofa for gas money. This is the ONE place I can come to and find normalcy in my crazy life that I call normal now. I am so happy that you have a job, that you can still buy 54 yards of fabric, that there is some semblance of stability in your life. It's almost like a touchstone --- your life is normal so there is hope that ours will return that way soon. Don't be so worried ... you are so respected for what you do and the inspiration you share with us. You ENRICH our lives.

  68. I don't think sewing really has gotten out of hand expense wise...I know I can still dash off a pair of capris or a cute top for my daughter and spend less than 10$ and that makes me very happy. Happy to sew, happy to create, happy to make me or someone else happy. Happy can only be a good thing.

  69. Girl, please. It's interesting that we focus so much on the negatives, rather than the positives in life. Carolyn, I feel bad that you've focused on someone elses jealousies.
You're (and in turn, those of us who read your wonderful blog) giving all this attention to this person and her negativity. I say don't do it! Why do you care what she thinks about YOUR fabric purchases?
Don't like reading about it? Don't visit the site.
I'm not being insensitive about the state of the economy, but, lets face it, fortunately, there are people, like you, Carolyn, who are still working, and can afford to purchase the things that are deemed 'wants' rather than necessities.
You're about fifty years old, right? So am I. I REFUSE (at this age)to be made to feel bad about the 'wants' that I purchase, I try to be careful about what I buy, and I am responsible for the bills I run up, NOT some anonymous person typing away on a keypad, spewing crap about what she sees or reads on a monitor.
Life is waaaaaaay too short. Buying fabric and sewing gives you pleasure, and you're not hurting anyone. Enjoy yourself. I can't wait to see what the next fabulous fabric finds yield, and what beautiful pieces result from your very talented and capable sewing hands. God Bless. :-)

  70. Nope. We can't live our lives worried that our particular circumstances will offend someone else. Your fabric photos are never offered up with a haughty "look what *I* can afford; they are shared with people who will appreciate and be inspired by them, and recognize that you found some bargains. Any envy we feel is minor, and is more a sense of annoyance that there is fabric out there we want and haven't acquired...YET. (Or envy that you can drop into Kashi's on your lunch hour...or pick up a Marfy catalog on your way to the office....but I digress. ;-) ) Keep on showing us your finds.

  71. How caring you are to think about offending someone! I doubt that you do bother anyone and, as others have said, they don't have to join in the joys (including fabric) that you share. I love fabric, patterns, and sewing tools. I like to look at fabric (my own and online), feel it, buy it, and sometimes even sew it. I buy a lot, but my purchases don't destroy the family budget. My DH says I'm an addict. I don't disagree, but it's an inexpensive addiction compared to many others. You know, I think you have the record for number of comments to one post. Most of us seem to be concerned about the amount of fabric and patterns that we buy. I believe it's part of the passion of sewing!

  72. There is a 50/50 chance someone is going to like what you do or say. When you take your chances in asking a question you already know what your odds are. I love to see color in fabric and yarn so keep posting what you do. I am part of the 50% that likes your stash. Who is it hurting. Everybody has something they love to do and you need the tools for initiation of a project and completion and fabric is it. I love your choices. Fufill your passion of the art of sewing stay sane and stay out of jail we can't have you killing anybody if you are not able to sew.

  73. As many others have said, this is your blog to post what you want when you want. I like seeing what you are doing-sewing, making purchases, provide sewing information, etc. There have been times that your fabric purchase has led me to buy the same fabric, take that as your inspiration to me.

I like you love to sew and sewing is my stress reducer and time to be creative. So post what you want and if others are offended or put off, they can click away to another blog or web page.

  74. Carolyn, as a returning sewer I like to see pattern and fabric selections on sewing blogs. It helps me to learn which fabrics would be best for a particular sewing project. That is very instructive for new and returning sewers.

  76. I love reading anything and everything you talk about in your posts. You are the one that introduced me to Metro and Kashi. I am using some knit from my Aug. 2008 visit to him just this week. Keep up the good work!

  78. I get the thought behind this post and I really appreciate it. It shows your kindness and empathy!

  79. Just found your blog love it. I am fairly new at sewing and figuring out how to place this on a RSS reader. Challenges!! Loved the linen blog as I am making linen skirts for casual wear. You answered a lot of questions. I considered calling my 84 yr old mom, who has sewed her whole life but I am embarrassed to admit I should have listened better when she wanted to teach me about sewing! Keep blogging and I love the way you have real people model your clothes. It is so hard to imagine what something looks like from a pattern drawing. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, opinions and life. I appreciate it.
