Eleven Years

I've been blogging pretty consistently at this spot for Eleven Years.

* I've written 1,883 blog posts.

* I've moved three times and changed jobs just as many times.

*My daughters have grown from teenagers & young womanhood to wonderful and amazing women...and still I sew and blog about it.

Along with changing jobs, I've changed the types of garments I sew. When I started this blog I was wearing business casual. Pants and twinsets, skirts and blouses with a cardigan, a dress or two ~ I was really a skirt girl at that time. I sewed a lot of them, long and knee-length, flared, straight, a-line and pencil.

Then I moved to the job that ate up all my time. I took it knowing that it would be more involved but my daughters were getting older and no longer needed me as much, I was divorced, so I thought working a little more would be a good thing. Plus I had to sew a whole new wardrobe because the dress code was really professional. I sewed some amazing dresses during that time.

Now I work in casual central ~ where relaxed and comfortable prevail. I've detailed some of the challenges I've experienced sewing for this new adventure. Recently I've adjusted my attitude and am now embracing the challenge of sewing for a new lifestyle.

Through everything I've sewed and blogged. Job changes, new places to live, changes in my daughters lives and becoming a grandma, I've sewn and documented everything here. I've reinvented my sewing space. I've detailed 90% of my adventures right here on the blog - shopping trips, museum visits, fabric scoops, sewcations, sewing techniques, #wineandcheesewithkashi, being a Star Blogger in Vogue Pattern Magazine, even a turn as a Mood blogger - all documented here. I've made some amazing friends through sewing and I appreciate each and every friendship!

It doesn't seem like it's been 11 years. It just seems like one great big sewing adventure. I have no thoughts of stopping now. I will probably be one of the last sewists blogging now that there are other forms of social media that allow sewists to share their passion. Even though I participate in a few, I still love the story that's told on a blog ~ the pictures, techniques and reason(s) why that garment came to be.

Maxidresses in 2015 & 2016

I would like to thank each and every one of you that have stopped by, left a comment, followed me for years as I've sewed on, just started following me, gave me your friendship because it's made me kinder, copied a garment I made and on and on.

Mostly though I want to thank you for reading my ramblings and joining me on my sewing journey. If you didn't read and comment, I would just be someone posting pretty pictures and spitting in the wind. You have given me a platform and you have discussed everything with me from politics to sewing for years...even when we didn't see eye to eye...and for that I THANK YOU!

In a totally self-serving moment, if you've been following along for awhile or even just recently, would you mind leaving a comment and telling me what garment or event encouraged you to keep coming back and sharing my journey. Thank you for leaving a comment because in 11 years, I'm still a comment ho! *LOL*

So it's been eleven years...here's to eleven more!

...as always more later.

p.s. The garments pictured in this post are some of my favorite makes from the last 11 years!

  1. Oh my gosh...I started reading your post and I thought, "OK, here it comes...wait for it - she's saying goodbye. Nooooooo!"

BUT, I came to the sentence "I have no thoughts of stopping now." and the earth started spinning again. Whew!

Being plus-size and of a certain age, I was having a hard time finding resources on the web when I returned to serious sewing several years ago. Yours was the first blog I found that felt like home. I have learned so much from you, about sewing and about body acceptance.

And you converted me to using a sleeve seam for the bodacious biceps we share. Grateful forever!

    Thank you!

    1. I read this and laughed out loud! Please, I like blogging too much to stop now. Plus where else would I show all my pretty pictures!?! I'm kinda hooked on this form of communication now.

  2. I'd forgotten about the black/leather designer knock-off and your niece's prom dress, both favorites. I love reading your blog for the way you find and adopt designer inspiration, for the techniques you share, but especially because of your forthrightness and honesty. No phoniness, just a real woman who knows who she is.

  3. I first read your blog about a capsule warsrobe and I was hooked! It wasn't one dress in particular, it was your concept of having a few TNT patterns that worked every time and then letting the fabric (and embellishments) speak:) I also loved your use of piping accents.

  4. Congrats on that kind of consistency!
I still love the light blue floral maxi above. It's elegant but fun, and beautifully fitted- that's what I always see in your sewing!

  5. When I joined Bloglovin and I was see who I was going to follow, you were my first choice. I recently started dedicating time to sewing garments and you have been an inspiration and I have bought and made some of your projects. I enjoy reading your blog so very much, there have been times that reading your blog has been the highlight of my day . I look forward to 11 more years. Keep up with your wonderful life.

  7. Fantastic achievement Carolyn, well done! I like visiting your blog not only to follow the sewing projects but also for the inspirational thoughts.
I admire people that can be honest and straight forward without being hurtful. You also accept and embrace your body and you do not try to be someone else. Keep up the good work!

  8. Congratulations on such a successful and well loved blog. I do hope there will be 11 more years at least !

  9. I enjoy your posts for many reasons. Your photos show the wide variety of garments you master. The TNT pattern is a great concept --not that I have owned it yet, but I get it! Your fabric cave is so cool -- and your stash of fabric is a major asset! I get a kick out of every shopping trip you make. Then seeing the garments that "appear" after he fabric has aged, always amazes me. The use of border fabrics is always of interest too. Your Cool Chico look is perfect too. Many thanks!

  10. Wow, that black designer knock-off is sensational! I always enjoy your blog and keep coming back for your good writing, warm personality and interesting discussion topics - as well as for the sewing, of course. I also still enjoy reading blogs and hope they don't die out. Keep it up!

  11. I don't remember how I found your blog. But I do keep coming back. Here are some of the reasons why:

    1. I respect how you embrace who you are. It has inspired me to do the same. You seem to recognize the positives and the negatives. You take both and make beautiful garments. I admire that.

    2. I love your process. I've learned some things about how I should prepare to sew a garment through you sharing not just how, but why you do certain things.

    3. You make sewing clothes an art. I spend more time knitting than sewing. But I feel more like an artist more.

Thanks for your blog. I really enjoy it! Oh....one more thing. I live in a rural community in Utah. I've enjoyed the glimpses of what it's like to live in a bigger, more urban area.

  12. Hi,

I enjoy the work outfits you whip up! I started following you when you made your daughter the 6686 dresses. You inspire me to try to sew garments. Keep at it!

  13. I follow because I enjoy what you create and your warm, friendly way of talking about it.

  14. Carolyn, I love the way you take a designer inspiration and make it your own, so very clever, and have appreciated your sharing the process along the way. Agree with Megan O, that black designer knock off is sensational... I remember thinking the same when you first posted it! Big congrats :)

  15. Carolyn, I can't quite recall when I started following your blog, but it was sometime in the past 2-3 years. We have different body shapes and often different aesthetics (I'm not fond of maxi dresses for myself, for example), but I am ALWAYS inspired and I learn so much. I can't recall any one garment or post that keeps me coming back. I enjoy your blog immensely. Thanks for all that you share. Congratulations on 11 years! What an accomplishment.

  23. Wowsers! I didn't even sew yet eleven years ago! I subscribed to your blog because you really balance discussion of the pattern, the fabric, the point of sewing and sewing work wear, which many people don't. Not too technical, but enough to give me a good understanding of what and why. It's great - don't ever stop :) I will try and comment more too!!!

  24. Congrats on 11 yrs! Don't remember when I started following you and who suggested it--I am also plus sized and enjoy seeing someone built somewhat similarly to me make lovely clothes. Esp. like the maxis; that's me in the summer for sure!!

I enjoy all your comments and little windows into your life and lovely family; could not be more different from you in view of politics, but hey, that makes it more interesting IMHO. I hope you don't give up the blogging since I refuse point blank to Facebook-it. Too much garbage in with the good stuff.

Cheers and here's to a great 2017 (And maybe a shorter commute for you some day).

  25. I had just started sewing (while I was in grad school) and I found the Selfish Seamstress blog while trying to figure out what this "Burda" thing was, which led me to realize there might be other sewing blogs, which is how I found this blog. Which I then binge-read instead of research papers. You know, as you do. I can't remember which garment specifically I liked (they were all so amazing), but I do remember being obsessed with the sewing room posts. Still hope that I might have so awesome a sewing space one day. Congrats and thanks for all you do for the sewing community!

  26. I love your blog for your thoughts around the sewing process and your honesty. Keeps me coming back. I'd far rather read a blog than posts on Instagram.

  27. Congratulations, and thank you, for 11 years of blogging. What a milestone.
It isn't so much any particular garment that brings me back so much as your voice and what you have to say. Perhaps it is the authenticity and the willingness to share: of both your knowledge and the sewing hurdles you face. I, for one, am very grateful!

  28. Congratulations on 11 years of blogging Carolyn! I like the story-telling aspect of blogging too, I hope bloggers keep posting regularly and readers keep commenting, because not everything can be insta! I found your blog around the time I started sewing blogging in 2010, and enjoy it because you are always natural and not overly curated - I feel like I'm listening to a real person with a passion for sewing!

  29. I've been following your blog now for a few months and love your style of writing, the pictures you post and your posts like this one that mix a little about you with the wonderful, things you make - you are definitely one of my favourite sewing blogs to follow and I'm some glad you plan to continue on

  30. Huge congratulations Carolyn. It's been lovely to follow along all thos years. Must have read most of your posts, as I know I read your blog before starting my own and I will have my 10th blog anniversary this year. It's the stories with the pictures format I love in blogging.

  31. Hi Carolyn, I regularly check in on your blog although I don't subscribe, and I use your 'friends' list as a portal into the sewing world on the web. I really enjoy seeing what you're up to : ) I sew pretty much everything I wear, usually from Burda Pattern magazine material, but I have nothing like your output! I like the intelligence with which you sew and the quality of your work but it's the easy way you talk in your entries that keeps me revisiting. So glad you're not thinking of giving up! Jane

  32. Congratulations on eleven years of blogging! I read your blog not because of any single garment - although there are plenty of inspiring makes - but because your writing is so enjoyable. You have a powerful voice. Your post about domestic violence some years ago moved me to tears.

  33. Congratulations on your anniversary!

Sorry, but I can't remember exactly when I started reading your blog. I know I started consistently checking in after you did a post on making elastic waist pants because of the ease of wear. I really appreciated hearing that from someone who makes such beautiful creations. Also, through reading your blog - I've learned the importance of creating a tnt pattern and using different fabrications to make each version unique. Although, I really miss seeing all of the beautiful dresses (really, reading about the processes) that you used to make, I am enjoying your new journey.

  34. I've been following your blog for a few months. I love how you your make the patterns your own. Thanks for the time you put in your blog. Greeting from the Netherlands.

  35. I've been reading your blog for at least five years, Carolyn, and really enjoy it. The way you detail your alterations has been really valuable for me, and I love seeing how you take one pattern and create so many different looks with it. I love seeing plus size women enjoying themselves and the looks they create and your contribution to the curvy sewing scene has been empowering for me. I'm thrilled that you plan to continue sharing your sewing journey with us all.

  36. Oh yes, please, eleven more years at least! I love your honesty and clarity of thought about *everything* - style, your body, the why of why you sew and your insights. You have the wonderful ability to say it like it is, but not offend. Your sense of humor really cracks me up, "comment ho!" lol. Are you blushing yet? Thank you for letting me ride along on your journey. Your posts inspire my dreams about my sewing desires.

  39. I've been following for so long I don't remember what caught my interest. I think perhaps it was the way you used TNT's and made your own variations. I am pretty sure it was you who introduced me to Adele Margolis. Well done on 11 years and best wishes for at least another 11!

  42. I am constantly inspired by your creating of and using a Tried and True pattern. Your ability to create your own designer garments or "knock off's" is truly amazing to me. I have followed you for about 6 years now, however, due to being embarrassed because I did not know how to leave a comment, I would read, be inspired and feel bad that I could not communicate. Am getting better still need to learn how to leave a comment without being "unknown" but I will get there. Thank you for your blog and I am glad that you will keep blogging.

  43. Carolyn, I've been enjoying your blog since my sewing journey began, just a few years ago. I love the conversation. I have learned so much through sewing blogs and am particularly inspired by you. You let us, the reader, get behind your eyes, hear your thoughts, show me what inspires you. and it inspires me. I don't often comment, selfish me, but I'm here. Thank you for sharing your art and thank you for the conversation.

  45. Followed you for some years now because you keep it real. You are a woman on a journey and it is the journey that counts. Sharing good times, sad times, lessons learned, successes achieved (loved your designer dress copy), disappointments met, struggles to adapt to change--all speak to the are universal truths of being a woman. And your bring us along and let us share the journey. What could be better! Thank you.

  46. Congratulations Carolyn. I love reading your blog and am inspired by your efforts and your sharing. At this point in time I am more a collector of all things sewing related than a sewist but am looking to change that. Your story and posts make me think I might be able to do it. Thank you for the enthusiasm you bring and for being you.

  49. I think I became a regular reader of your blog when you posted a photo of a linen shirt dress from a Vogue designer pattern (Tamotsu?) that you had tea-dyed. That was probably my favourite dress, but your colour blocked dress in ponte (red, white and black) that you made as a designer knock-off was probably my second favourite. I enjoy seeing how you take patterns and fabric and make them distinctively your own.

  50. Congratiolations on 11 years of inspiring blogs and creations!

  51. Hi Carolyn! I've been reading (every post) for a couple of years. I think what I find most compelling about your blog is your honesty. Sewing for ourselves isn't easy and I can always count on you to tell it like it is! Thank you for your authenticity and for you commitment.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Congratulations on your achievements so far, and best wishes for the next years, projects, plans. There are too many successes for me to pick a favourite, though. I always enjoy seeing what you produce.

  53. I found you sometime during the professional era, and the dress that really sticks out in my memory is a yellow one for Easter. Loved that dress. I so appreciate you documenting your fitting issues, and your TNT basics and how to apply them to new patterns. Keep on keeping on, love seeing what you are doing. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  54. My mother suggested your blog as she said it was inspirational. Your ability to fit garments and your adaptations of TNT to make designer knock offs were what had me coming back!

  55. I thought at the beginning of your post that you were going to say you were quitting blogging. Thank goodness you are going to continue blogging. I adore your blog and you are always an inspiration. Thank you for 11 years!♥♥♥

  56. Your blog was one of the first sewing blogs that I started following. It was during your professional era and I find your journey into a more casual work wear inspiring because you always look so well-put together. I love wearing dresses and I'm an odd woman out in my work-life at a school. I struggle with finding clothes comfortable with all the messy and physical aspects of my job and that also keep the bosses happy with their professional dress code. So I always look forward to see what you're making. There are too many favourites but I always appreciate your details into fitting and adjusting patterns. Oh and your grand-kids are the cutest models as well!

  57. Carolyn, I have always loved your blog and I'm selfishly so happy that you haven't jumped ship. 58. You always make beautiful clothing and that in itself is enough to keep anyone coming back to read your posts! However, it was the mention of your title in your profession that pulled me in too, LOL!! I was the same before retiring! Love your work and so looking forward to more posts from you as 2017 rolls on!

  60. WOW, eleven years....that awesome. Of course the clothing is a huge draw for me but more than that is your humor, family ties, adventures into the big city (love those) and always taking encouragement to grow my sewing skills that I take from your words. Thanks so much! Barbara

  61. Congrats on 11 years. I have been following you for some time and will be here till the end. I follow because we are of similar age, size and mind. Now that does not mean I always agree with you, but life would be boring if we all agreed all the time. I follow for your sewing wisdom and the inspiration I receive from it. But, I also love that you personalize it with your family and personal happenings. Your human. Thank you for your time and effort to share what you do.

  62. When I read the beginning of this blog, I thought, Oh Lord, she going to quit blogging. Thank you for sticking with it. I've been reading your blog for about 3 years, I think. Your writing style makes me feel like we are neighbors. I like your politics. I keep thinking I will find more time to get back to sewing the way I did years ago, before I ever went to work outside my home and I want to refer to your blog if I ever get stuck. Just keep blogging, okay? If it takes me commenting to keep you going, I'll do my part. I'll comment. I have seen many of your makes that really appealed to me. Keep talking, keep talking.

  63. There's so much I love about your blog. I guess the main thing that keeps me coming back is the process. I love the how and why and you share it so generously. 70. I can't remember how long I have been reading your blog- but it's been a while. You were one of the first bloggers I read and since we are the same age, seem to have a lot in common. When I urge my ASG chapter members to read blogs, yours is the one I always suggest. As far as posts I keep going back to- its the coat from the Kantha quilt. Yours is just my style. I ordered a quilt from a vendor on Amazon and it took forever to be shipped. When it arrived, I found I couldn't cut it apart. I kept thinking about those women in India doing all those stitches by hand. So now it sits as a throw on the armchair in my bedroom. Keep up the good wrk!

  71. I love your blog too. I appreciate the way you adapt your base patterns to make new shapes and textures. I' also shaped like you, so I like being able to see how something would look on me.

    Keep up the great work!

  72. I read many blogs while drinking my morning coffee, but I have to admit that there are four bloggers that stand out for me and you're one of the four. Thinking about the reason for that, I find that I really can't explain it except that you have the perfect blend of sewing, fabric, adventures, work and family in your blog. It all works so well and I thank you for the time you take to write this blog.

  73. Carolyn, I've been following for about 3 years since I got back to sewing after a few years and really trying to learn how to fit my plus sized middle aged body. Ought a pattern based on your examples.

  74. I've continued to follow your blog because I enjoy seeing your journey. I'm mostly a quilter now but I used to make most of my wardrobe. Don't need as many clothes in retirement.

  75. Well, does comment #73 really matter? lol Maybe I should wait for your next post to comment.

I keep coming back for your attitude about sewing - from my point of view, you are always "making it work" for you. Also, one of the first posts I read was about using your sloper to adjust a tissue pattern, and that's how I work.

    1. Brenda and everyone else - EVERY SINGLE ONE of these comments matter to me. I'm hearing from people that I didn't know read or were still reading my blog! So thank you for being #73, #101 or #5 - all mean so much to me!

  76. I first found your blog through and older post while searching for something-don't remember what...
In that post you said something a long the lines of...
'I did't do a swayback adjustment because it doesn't bother me'
WHOA! I was hooked. I was (still) trying to get used to sewing with patterns that no longer fit straight out of the envelope (I've been sewing a LONG time too) It was great to hear-it's okay to not make a fitting adjustment...
    Thank you.

    1. Palma - I'm sure the fit technicians weren't happy with me over that statement but it is what it is. I like to sew. I like the feeling of accomplishment and I KNOW that the clothing I make for my body fit me so much better than anything I can buy at RTW so if I have a little extra fabric at the back it ain't gonna hurt nobody.

  77. I started reading your blog in 2012, after Phyllis of CoudreMode wrote about your mastery of proportion. I haven't missed a post since. You bring to blogging what cannot be told through the more immediate social media tidbits: the ever-unfolding story of your creative process.

  78. Thank you for sharing so many sewing stories, and I have appreciated reading the more personal stories as well. I started following your blog because I was inspired by a plus size woman who did not let the body size conventions dictate her dress style. You look great! 1. Dear, Carolyn, I don't know how long I've been following your blog, I know it is longer than I have been an actual subscriber. I always came back because I liked the way you write, I enjoy your speaking voice in the blog. I like to think if we met we would be friends.

  80. WOW has it really been 11 years I think I have been following your blog for a 11 years as I remember I started following you when I joined PR. There are only three that I still follow and you are among those. I do not comment but regularly however I do enjoy your blog and this is the first place I come for help with adjusting patterns as you are in inspiration on the plus size fit. I enjoy your honesty a conviction to sewing and principals. Thanks you for a great 11 years and I will make it a point to comment more often and maybe even blog( I have been saying this for years ) but I think this might be the year for me . Thanks again

  81. I don't think there has been one particular garment that inspired me, it's just all of it! I love your voice and your style. I love reading about construction details and the why and how behind fabric choices, alterations, etc. Your blog is one I always read in my list!

  82. It seems like forever that i have been coasting along with you and admiring all your techniques and wonderful results. Your clothes are ones I would love to make for myself if I wasn't bogged down with brides. Here's to another 11 wonderful years! Thank you for all your photos and stories and letting us see your family growing up!

I'm more of a lurker but I've been reading your blog for awhile.
I don't have a favourite garment but I am continuously impressed at your combinations of different fabrics. It has made me look at my stash in different ways (tho' not necessarily increased output -you are truly impressive.) Your children and grandchildren are so lucky to have you creating clothes for them. They are so much nicer than anything they could purchase elsewhere.
I'm looking forward to the next 11 years.

  85. Congratulations on 11 years of blogging! I can't remember when I started reading your blog. I don't know if it's been 11 years, but it has been a bunch of years. I started reading and following with Google Reader. I continue to read your blog not because of any one outfit or any one moment, but because of the joy you obviously get from sewing. It's fun and uplifting to read about the happiness that sewing brings. It's just nice. Thank you. :)

I'm a dedicated reader and follower, but don't often comment. I love how often you write and always check my blog reader each morning as I drink my coffee. I know many bloggers are moving to other platforms but I'm a reader and really prefer reading blog posts rather than instagram pictures. And I use my instagram feed professionally (I'm a high school foods teacher, so post up pictures of the dishes my students cook) and don't want to mix that in with personal interests. What do I love the most - watching your process and ALL THE DRESSES! I love dresses and they are my preferred work wear item. I love that you have/had a TNT (or are developing them) and then how you transform them into something so amazing and different. Please, Please, PLEASE keep writing and creating. Best wishes from ALberta, Canada!

  88. I am in AWE of 11 years of blogging!!! I have just gotten back to sewing in the past year, so I have not read most of your blog......so I have some fun reading to catch up on. Since my life is mostly casual, I am glad you are now doing Chico's chic. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your life with us.

  89. It's always the first blog I check when I want to see what the sewing world is doing. There are so many reasons I read yours, first there is someone out there that has as much fabric that I do LOL. You postings are complete, if that makes sense. You answer all the top WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and HOW. Somehow you give off a friendship vibe in your posts, its like I am reading something a friend would send me. So as long as you keep posting I know I will be one to keep reading.

  90. So glad I discovered your blog, I think it was in 2009, and I have really enjoyed your sewing journey through different fabrics, patterns and styles. And glad to count you as a friend as well! Keep on blogging - as you mentioned, the story is as much as the garment and I love to read the details. By the way, one garment I really liked was this one http://sewingfantaticdiary.blogspot.com/2011/06/butterick-5620.html, which I think you were not happy with. I love a border print and it's so difficult to find nice ones. Happy Sewing in 2017!

Thank you for continuing to follow along on my journeys - even though I think I learn way more from your blog posts than you do from mine! :)

What is TNT? How do I fix the slight puddle in the lower back on blouses) dresses that are not princess seaming? I really like the black dress too.thanks for being an inspiration.

  92. I have been following your blog for years and this is the first time that I have commented on any blog.(old dog learning new tricks, lol)l was asking myself why is it that your blog is the first thing that I check out each day whether I am currently sewing or not. I have decided that it's because I am sharing vicariously in your joy of the craft.Your blog gives me great pleasure and I thank you greatly.

  93. I've been quietly following your blog for at least a few years. I think I was first compelled to follow not because of any specific item of clothing, but because, I could relate to your story: a mom of young adults using sewing as a creative outlet and form of self-expression. To an outside person (or probably even to you) we are vastly different - different life experiences, different styles, different ideas - but I love having the opportunity to see our similarities through your blog. And just maybe you'll inspire me to post to my own blog more than once or twice a year :)

  94. Ms. Carolyn, I literally 'stumbled' upon your blog when I was trying to find sewing blogs. I went back and read every blog you wrote. I was amazed how you could werk a TNT pattern to repro a style you liked. As I savored each Sewing Fanatic Diary post, I'd say to myself 'I want to be like her when I grow up'. Like Michelle Obama, you take the high road with dressing a plus sized body, addressing domestic violence, divorce, single parenting, politics, work environments, grandchildren, adult children, etc. I'm a little older than you but I'm a newbie in sewing and blog-land. I've gleaned much from your expertise and wisdom (still trying to figure out your TNT-to-New Pattern-Sandwich method-lol). Just want to let you know I appreciate you (being a friend in my head) and your blog. Congratulations on 11 Years of Quality, Purposeful, and Enjoyable Blogging!

  95. Carolyn, yours was possibly the very first sewing blog I ever read! And I've never looked back.. Although the I sew the majority of my clothes these days, I,ve never blogged about the my sewing as I am not sure I have much to share. But that doesn't stop me from reading other people's blogs!

I am delighted you plan to continue writing about your sewing, you've given me some fantastic inspiration. It would be difficult for me to choose just one garment as a favorite...bit the black sheath dress in thos post and the boucle jacket are two that always make me stop and stare.

Thank you very, very much for all the time and effort you put into your beautiful posts. I look forward to each and every one.

  97. Hi, Carolyn! I got back in to sewing about 2 years ago.Your blog is one of the first that I found and the one I most consistently follow. I have been inspired by your sense of fashion and how you have TNT patterns that just always look great on you! I'm still searching for more TNT patterns for me. One of your great makes is your jeans! I wonder if you're as proud of those as you should be! they also look great on you. I have not made jeans yet, but this is on my To Do list for 2017. Thank you for being a sewing inspiration. Like you, I currently have a demanding job. Finding time to be creative has been a lifeline for me. Not always achievable to find time for, though. Thank you for all you do!

Happy to have found you!

  100. I have been reading your blog for over 5 years I think. I've never commented before. I'm so glad you are continuing to blog. I enjoy your posts very much. In recent years, my health has reduced my time at the sewing machine but I never get tired of reading and seeing what others are sewing. Every time I read your blog, I am inspired by your dedication to sewing and the beautiful garments you create. It's amazing to me that blogging is falling out of favor so quickly. Reading your blog is like a little visit with you and I like that. I hope you never stop!

  101. I only follow three sewing blogs. One rarely posts anymore, but I have not gone looking for a 'replacement', as yours meets all my needs. I do not comment on a regular basis, as my comments generally would be repeating the ones already posted, admiration for your sewing.

As a mature university student, the sewing you are doing now better fits with my lifestyle, but I have enjoyed all the posts.

I wish I had your skill to visualize how a garment will turn out and how you use you tnt patterns as a base for some pretty incredible designer knock offs. I appreciate when you post a project that did not work out as planned. It is nice to know I am not the only one with wadders.

I am planning a travel wardrobe for a 6 week trip to Europe this spring. I know I will not be making everything (not enough time with my course load), but I will be turning to your blog for inspiration.

Posts about your family are wonderful.

  102. I have enjoyed reading your blog for several years now. I always check while I'm eating lunch to see if there is a new one. I was concerned that you were going to sign off as I was reading this one, though. I like so many of your things and really enjoy seeing how you use your TNTs for new things. You inspire me to keep my TNTs in shape. I also like reading about your trips to fabric stores or sites where you purchase garment fabrics since we have a shortage where I live. It helps me stay up on newer fabrics. It's like having a garment sewing friend in a world of quilters. Thanks for all your writing about and inspiration for sewing.

  103. Carolyn, I have been visiting your blog for awhile. I enjoyed reading about your new wardrobes with each job change, sharing with us milestones in your personal life, and sharing photos of your children and grandchildren. You are a normal, everyday person who keeps it real. We all have our points of views whether its politics or otherwise. That's what makes the world different and exciting. My favorite dress, is the black/leather designer knockoff dress. You knocked that one out of the ballpark! I love your other designs too, but that one was my all time favorite. Keep on keeping it real as you always have....I look forward to following you in 2017!

  104. Time flies on the blogging front. I've been doing it since 2008, so not as long as you. I like re-reading my blog posts as an online journal of sorts. It's too easy to forget what we make and do. And it's an amazing journey. Instagram serves a different purpose in my life but blogging allows me to post more than one photo and tell a story of sorts. Keep writing and making. I enjoy reading your blog.

  105. I started following you when you became a Mood MSN blogger. But I didn't follow everyone that did that, I think I keep coming back because of the opinions that you share and the personal background that you give. I don't generally enjoy blogs that just keep strictly to sewing with nothing else added in.

  106. I love the white boucle jacket! I've been with you for years. Keep up the good work.

  107. I think I started following your blog back when my second daughter was born - she's 10 now. I wanted to sew so badly, but she was a colicky baby......in other words, I couldn't put her down, so I wore her in a sling. But I couldn't sew while wearing her, so every chance I got, I went online, reading sewing blogs. And I sewed vicariously thru you 😉.
Now that my girls are older, no one has colic, and I sew as I can fit it in with the normal homeschooling mom stuff, I am still sewing vicariously thru you! I really like that black leather dress. I enjoyed your denim phase (*homeschool mom* 😁). I think you've done me a world of good, just allowing me to see the pieces you've sewn and letting me read all the backstory, explanations, etc. about each one.
    Thank you!

  108. Carolyn, Your lovely review and appraisal has dragged me out of the shadows as a read-only guest. I've been reading sewing blogs easily half as long as you've been writing. While other new media has its place, the written word has dual qualities. New 'kids' don't realise how really slow a video can be compared to reading for absorbing information. Reading blogs is the fastest way to learn. But writing, especially the polished & edited form of many bloggers is also a treat - writing to be savoured. So these two reasons are why I read blogs. Like many others, I've got Craftsy Classes but for weekly diet it is the bloggers I learn and utterly enjoy.
As a single woman in her 40s I can indulge in evenings with my global collection of bloggers. Better than films.
Your blog is a constant for regular reading. A regular mixture of technique, design challenges, inspiration, motivation and life through sewing choices. You provide a great diary of the pre sewing though process which not many still write about. So the inspiration concept, to fabric, to pattern to sewing documenting is such a learning process for us all. I appreciate your polished, yet open writing style. Your posts are generally tight essays and not ramblings.
So from a globe trotting nomad who is living in Edinburgh, Scotland, warmest regards and thanks for all that your on-line writing gives to me. Maybe I will overcome reticence and comment more after this.
    Regards,

  110. Congrats on the 11 year milestone, Carolyn. I've been reading your blog for at least 6 or 7 years and can't remember if I found you via Debbie at Stitches & Seams or Renee at Miss Celie's Pants. I mostly sew quilts and home dec now but I sewed garments for decades and one of the most fun vacations I ever had was a week at the Palmer & Pletsch Fit Workshop in Portland Oregon (I live near Seattle). My favorite of your blog posts is when you describe or show your "inspiration" pieces and then detail your creative/sewing/fit process to make it your own. I also love that you are a woman of color (I'm not) so you add much appreciated diversity to my world - and I hope it's not rude to say that out loud. If you ever come back to Seattle I would love to meet you. If you want to come back to Sew Expo you are welcome to stay at my house! Thanks for all you have shared with us - both sewing-related and plain old life-related - over the years. I am so grateful. -JulieG

  111. 11 years is such a milestone achievement. And you have finally lured us reader's only into leaving a comment. Yours was one of the first blogs I found over four years ago and many of those I now read regularly were from following links on your blog. I appreciate your honest well written posts and willingness to share yourself which is often thought provoking. We for instance only have one rubbish bin (the kitchen bin) in the whole house!! The concept of the TNT with an ability to take an inspiration image and make it your own is creatively enriching. Please do keep blogging whilst an image is worth a thousand words those words add so much value - creating the story.

  113. Carolyn, I've been reading you for at least 8 yrs, maybe longer. I wouldn't say it was a specific garment that made me return but it was the use of your TNT's. More specifically the way you use one to hack another pattern or copy something from RTW. I was hooked. Seeing your success gave me the courage to try. I've had successes and failures but I always learned something.

Because of what I learned from your pattern slicing and dicing I had the opportunity to do a trunk show at a small local fabric store talking about the use of TNT's and how very easy it really is to change the design and add seaming details. During the trunk show I was asked about how I learned to work with the patterns the way I do and I gave the credit to you! Because some of the ladies liked one of my tops so much it spurred a workshop taught by me. A two day workshop ( pattern drafting and fitting ) with 6 ladies and it went fabulously. The workshop lead to a monthly class with the same ladies and by the second class I'd picked up another through word of mouth.

Never in a million years would I have pictured myself where I am now and I give a lot of the credit to you. I thank you for that. I'm glad you have no intention of quitting that way I can keep learning.

I will be with you on blogging. I like Instagram but nothing beats the story behind a garment, a fabric choice, a pattern, etc. Nothing.

I found you originally because I was searching for a) WOC bloggers b) curvy bloggers. Nothing against anyone else, of course, but in the beginning it was harder for me to consider garments on my body when they're on someone who is a pattern size 6 or 8. 132. Congratulations on 11 years of blogging. Personally, I like reading sewing blogs most of all the forms of social media because of the WORDS. A picture may be worth 1,000 words elsewhere, but I think when it comes to sewing, words are so important as a means of getting the story behind the completed project. No single picture gives you that, and that is what I find interesting.I hope you continue to blog for many years to come.

  139. I recently discovered you when I was researching a pattern (S8059 -- I like to find out ahead of time any issues, etc. with a pattern) and was directed to your blog. And I do love that cardigan of yours -- still haven't made mine yet! I enjoy your posts and look forward to them and best wishes on many more years of blogging!

    1. JH - I have four more of them coming. I know right...but I kept getting ideas to sew. They will probably be photographed next weekend.

  140. Holy cow! I hope your inner comment ho is very happy now! Heh.

I can't remember when I started reading your blog but it was near the beginning somewhere. My style differs completely but I loved your honest attitude, thoughtfulness, enthusiasm and your body acceptance. Your process posts are a goldmine of helpful info! I learned to work with the body I have instead of the one I wish I had, to use TNTs, and to realize that my stash is actually relatively small. ;)

Just ignore the "blogging is dead" hype and carry on! I'll be here. Thanks, Carolyn!

  141. I started following you a year or 2 ago. While I follow some other sewers through other means, I still love reading your blog - seeing your process, your space, your progress in a "meatier" way. I love your honestly and really enjoy seeing how you modify things in new and interesting ways. I'm so glad you aren't quitting anytime soon!

  142. I always love seeing what you are sewing (or planning). Long may you blog 😀

  143. I've been following you for a few years and I still haven't made a garment! I'm mostly a modern quilter but the desire to make my own clothing doesn't go away. So this year I'm ordering a pattern, taking a class, learning how to fit myself - and making an outfit! You inspire me to try my ideas with clothing. Thank you!

  144. hi carolyn - i have been reading your blog for several years, tho have never commented. i love your style, your enthusiasm, and your conviction that ANY body shape can be stylish and fashionable -- and your continued challenge to a fashion industry that channels beauty into rigid and narrow categories. i've been sewing since i was 5 and sitting on my mom's lap -- almost 50 years ago! -- and i too hold the conviction that as sewists we can sew ourselves ANYTHING we can dream up. keep up your excellent and awesome work!!

  145. It was how you worked your TNT patterns and I'm not sure how I found your blog.

No matter what I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog, the inspiration for the garments, all of it and it was fantastic to meet you last year, another benefit of blogging.

  146. I have lurked for a while, but I wanted to say thank you for continuing to blog! I look forward to your posts - not just about what you are able to create for yourself, but for your beautiful family as well. I appreciate learning from your struggles, and am looking forward to continue reading about your adventures for many more years to come! Thank you :)

  147. Congratulations on eleven years! I'm a relatively new reader; I started last spring. I don't recall the first post I read, but I know I enjoyed your writing style and the joy in your photos from the beginning. I'm looking forward to more!

  148. Ditto all the comments above!

I found your blog a few years ago when I was searching for a sewist more my age and my size.

I stayed because I like your outlook on life. It's not about the sewing so much for me. I just like reading what you write. :-)

  149. I'm so glad to see that I'm comment #172 - that means you're still getting zillions of readers and comments.I give you great kudos for sticking with it - blogging eats up a lot of time! I loved getting to know you back in the SG days, and I still hope you'll manage to make a trip to SC one of these days. Cheers my friend, and here's hoping you have another 11 yrs of sewing blogging! 150. Yes, samey thing, I like what you write and the content of what you share in your sewing. One of the things that attracted to me to your blog, you were not shy about your curvy figure. Keep on keeping on, my sister.

  151. I love seeing how your describe your process and fashion a wardrobe that completely suits your lifestyle. I am just outside of Philadelphia, and you have inspired me to drive out to Fabric Mart one day (hopefully soon)-- you find quite the treasures there!

  152. Dear Carolyn,
I rarely comment, and we'll probably never meet IRL, but know you've got a friend in Santa Barbara who always looks forward to hearing from you. Your expertise and creativity always inspire and inform me. Thank you for sharing all these years and thank you for planning to continue in the blog format.

  153. Amazing how closely we started blogging...me in November and you in January...eleven years ago! Like you, I don't think I'll ever stop. Slow down, maybe, but stop...nope.

I can't pick out one thing that's inspired me. Just knowing you're there is a warm fuzzy. Thanks for the years of encouragement and inspiration!

  154. Congratulations, 11 years of consistent and quality filled blogging is quite an achievement. I still remember years ago I was just lurking around on blogs, finally got inspired to start my own and one of the first comments I got was from you along the lines of "Ah ha now I now who has been following me from Hong Kong!" I felt a bit naughty!! - I think it's fair to say you encouraged me to participate more and I couldn't be happier about that, so thank you!

  155. Totally impossible to pick out one single inspiration! What I love is that you keep blogging and balance topics between your life, your personality, and how it all ties in to your sewing. Oh, and every so often you pay a visit and drop on line on my floundering blog - it's greatly appreciated. Congratulations on 11 years!

  156. I'm a former blogger (Amber from Confessions of the Pink Obsessed) that hasn't been following for a few years now because having 2 young children took me completely away from blogging and severely lessened the time I had to sew. But, I'm getting my sewing mojo back (going from sewing for the office to sewing for my SAHM life) and I thought about you recently (how much I loved seeing what you'd create) and thought I'd pop in. :) I'm so happy to see that you're still knocking out awesome creations and that you are doing well. I've joined a couple of FB sewing groups and it's been nice to see a steady stream of seamstresses showcasing their work, but I do miss seeing stuff from my old blogging pals.

I also saw the Simplicity controversy about the Hidden Figures ad pop up in another group, but everything had been deleted by the time I went looking for it. Thank you for bringing it up and sharing your thoughts. My background (pre-kids) was in microbiology and Public Health and I've been a science gal for as long as I can remember. How we never heard about these amazing women is shameful and I'm so happy that we're FINALLY getting their story. Hoping to see it with some of my girlfriends later this month. I hope the positive reaction means that we will get more stories like this on the big screen and in our history books soon.

  157. Hey! :-) I've been following your blog since I have gotten back into sewing right before my oldest was born, so at least 4 years now! I really appreciate your honest & tactful feedback on well everything you blog about!

  158. Sorry for my slow response Carolyn. I started following you because you are one of the big names in clothes making blogging. I like your steadfastness, your openness and willing to share your feelings, I love your family, how you talk about work and your wardrobe, your insights into politics and religion. I am interested in how you dress for your size and shape, which is always stylish and fun. Thank you.

  159. Another lurker commenting. I have read your blog since I retired and have more time for my sewing obsession. I also make quilts. I love that your sewing room is practical and not showcase beautiful in your photos. I feel as though the absolutely perfect photos of sewing rooms are either super cleaned up, or the sewer/ist has a hissy fit if one thread or trimming scrap is left on the floor. When I am planning a quilt or garment, mine looks like a fabric bomb went off. I love the way you combine fabrics to make great dresses. The 2 center ones in the panel of 4 pics are fabulous. I have about 6 patterns that I find I have used over and over, changing them for the occasion. I also have 2 boxes of patterns that are seldom used. Keep on blogging. We all enjoy it.

  160. I've been reading your blog for several years. I really enjoy how honest you are about, well, everything. You turned me on to the idea of TNT patterns, and venturing out of the comfort zone to explore creative ideas, even if they don't always turn out the way you want. Wishing you another 11 years of blogging!

  161. I've been reading your blog for a couple of years now. You are the first one I discovered that there is a whole curvy world out there! I never knew it existed and now, with your help, don't feel bad about being curvy and how to adjust my patterns to fit better and to have a higher success rate. Thank you SO much and I am looking forward to your next eleven years!! :)

  162. Carolyn, you are so beautiful. I love reading your posts. Your love for life and your honesty really shine through. I'm so glad you will continue showing us all of your wonderful sewing makes.

  163. A rather late response. I can't remember how I found your blog but I enjoy it for your style, your honesty, description of processes, oh so many things. Sewing and non sewing. I'll be reading for years to come I hope.

  164. I don't know how long I've been following you, Carolyn! I guess from the time I discovered sewing blogs, when the sewing divas just started blogging.

I kept coming back, even during the time I had a big huge break from sewing. Something drew me back. I loved the TNT posts, your own take on designer inspirations, but more than anything else, you felt like family to me. I come here to read about you, to see how you've been doing lately and what you've been doing.

I learnt to change my attitude about my body. I learnt so many things from you, non sewing stuff included.

When I started reading this post, for a moment panic stuck, and I started reading really fast. And phew! You'll be there blogging. :) congratulations on this milestone and thank you for all the amazing blog posts and sharing a part of you with us.

I'm thrilled to hear about your sewing retreats. I so wish I could come. Maybe, someday. :)

    Big hugs!!!

  166. Dear Carolyn--sorry to be late to your party, but big congratulations on your 11 years of blogging anyway! As you can tell, I don't check in regularly, but I'm always happy to read what you write. I love that you share your thoughts about intentions and results in sewing, as well as all the thoughts you share about other things. I'm not one for other social media, so thank you so much for keeping on with your blog, and here's to many more happy blogging years for you!
