I've Been Sewing

My sewing resolution for 2023 is to take my time, create more involved garments, and enjoy the journey more.

My reasons are:

  1. I don't need a lot of new clothes.  I have a few holes that need to be filled but not enough for me to create large amounts of clothing.
  2. I want to explore the technique driven side.  Not just sewing techniques but fabric manipulation, dyeing, printing, quilting, the techniques that take time and aren't accomplished in a weekend.
  3. There have been some ideas that have been floating around in my mind that I've always said, when I have more time.  And as the saying goes, "You MAKE time for the things you want to do."  So I'm making time.

While I'm concentrating on making tops, because that's what I NEED right now.  I'm making tops with fabrics and techniques that need special handling. I want to take my time and enjoy the journey.  Sewing this way is going to slow my making way down...and I'm good with that!

I may even do more progress posts so my finished posts aren't so long and involved. I have one top finished, waiting for buttons and buttonholes and one top that I've just started.  However, the fabrics I used are what makes each top so distinctive and enjoyable to sew.

This is the first tunic I worked on in 2023. It's a MimiG Katie tunic that I've made several times before.  However, it's the panel print I used that made this sewing journey so enjoyable.

My second piece is a pleather and knit top from Cashmerette Club called the Wexford.

I have a few more tops queued up with fabric and patterns pulled and there are two more housedresses I want to add to my "house dress collection."  2023 is going to be an interesting sewing year and I hope you hang with me on my sewing journeys.

...as always more later!

  1. That Mimi G Katie top is TDF. Love the large print it looks so happy. I’m in the same boat as you. Working on less but with more purpose. Jacqui from New Zealand.

    1. Thanks! I'm thinking about it so you don't have to read through so much in a post. We will see how the year shakes out.

  6. I absolutely love that yellow flowered tunic with the panel print! I'm going to steal that idea for my next The Assembly Line Oversize Shirt. I don't wear maxi's but a tunic in the spring or summer would be just right. Looking forward to your latest makes.

    1. Theresa - steal away! I've looked at the Assembly Line Oversize Shirt but have so many shirt patterns just haven't found the need to purchase the pattern. However, you're right. An amazing panel print would be gorgeous using that pattern.

  10. I am so excited to see you taking this journey. You have the foundation to make your journey into a more artistic lane work. Welcome to this aisle of fun and creativity. You have what it takes, Carolyn, and will so enjoy it. Your work has always been inspirational with your eye for composition and planning skills. I know this turn in the road will be one that goes well for you. I look forward to seeing your creations and watching your progress. Take all the course you can, follow blogs of other creative sewists and get inspired. It will definitely take longer for some garments but it is such fun and so worth the wait. So glad to hear this.

  11. Your work is always so outstanding. I am at the same place you are. Sewing with more intention and techniques that I want to learn. I do have a question. I remember at some point you mentioned that you send your pdf patterns to someone to print and then mail back to you. I believe the woman's name was Maxine. Can you provide me with the info on her. I looked around on the blog, but got bogged down. Thanks!

  13. I've just been reading your post from December 2006 - 10 Sewing Things I know to be True - So true well apart from the thread storage, I've got loads of that. I really enjoy going back and reading your old posts.
