May = Fall???

In today's mail was my June issue of Harper's Bazaar...

Now normally I love Bazaar because they do this great series of how to wear the latest styles for your age...however, can someone tell me when the end of May/beginning of June equalled Fall? People, the pages of the magazine are predominantly filled with "Pre-Fall" clothes...are you kidding me?

We haven't had our first 90 degree day yet? We haven't had a heat wave yet? I haven't experienced my "What the h*ll was she thinking wearing white pants with a polka dot thong" moment! I haven't longed for a kewl rain to wash the heat away yet? And most importantly, I haven't even begun to wear my summer wardrobe...and the magazines are telling me it's fall!

Ooops, excuse me...pre-fall! Yeah, okay, right! And that's why clothing isn't selling and you are marking it way down!

Next...
I've had the worse cold since Saturday and the most that I've done to my vintage dress is adjust the bodice front. Do you know how torturous it is to be home and unable to sew because you just can't drag yourself to your machines? Yeah, so if you know the feeling you know how I've felt for the last few days...but I managed to d-r-a-g myself to work!

So I have no news on the vintage dress front...and no news on the June Capsule Contest front...and no news on the Great Coat Sew-Along front...all I've got is the question,

May = Fall???

  1. I can understand your annoyance with inappropriateness of the clothes for the season at hand. I can understand it - because we Sunbelt dwellers live it 365 days a year. Imagine looking at cashmere and corduroy when the temperature has blown the top off the thermometer Oh wait...looks like you'll get your chance! I'm wondering if the sluggish economy (is hardened cement "sluggish?") is causing the fashion industry to hope that people will plan to spend money later on for fall fashions, since they apparently aren't doing it now on summery things.

  2. Yeah, I thought it was strange, too. We've had an unseasonably cool spring here, too, so fall clothes are the very last thing I wanted to see. Definitely a WTF issue!

  3. I just want to enjoy my spring/summer experience. I am a true july baby! They can have fall and winter.

  4. As far as I can tell, most of the east and midwest has had a very cool, not to say cold, spring. I'm sure none of you wants to look at fall clothes right now! And Karla's right. As a former midwesterner, I am so envious every August when that big Sept. issue of Vogue arrives, and I realize that 90% of the fashions are too heavy for San Diego weather. On the other hand, along about February I remember the advantages of living here!
Carolyn, hope you are feeling better soon!

  5. Fall clothes,no way.I'm with you on that. However with our weather being in the 70's and 80's,I had the horror of "polka dot thongs with white pants" blinding me on far too many occasions.
    Get well soon!

  6. I know! I *just* opened up my storage bins with my stored summer clothes. And I'm still deciding what my "it" dress will be this summer. I'm not ready for Pre-Fall!

  7. I was soooo cold yesterday and even my heat kicked on again last night. I'm waiting for yet still dreading the 90+ degree days that I know are coming. But, I keep thinking I should sew off season so I would have new things at the beginning of the season. I haven't been to the mall in forever. I wonder what they are carrying there....

  8. I got my issue of Harper's Bazaar this week and I thought the same thing--this is way, way too early to be showing wool clothes. While I actually like many of the clothes show, this issue would have been more appropriate for August. The May issue of Vogue also jumped a couple seasons ahead with their Superman in the Office. Maybe the two magazines are dueling. Marji figured it right with the timing of the coat sew-along.

As far as feeling too crummy to sew, we've all been there. It's pure torture!

  9. FALL Clothes! Good grief I'm barely wearing my springish clothes and the summer ones are hanging in my closet, looking longinly out at the sun (when we see it). I had to turn my pellet stove on yesterday for awhile and I also had the heat on in my sewingroom. In spite of this I do not want to see Fall clothes anytime soon.

I hope you are feeling better.

  10. Well it's fall (autumn) where I live!!!!

  11. Oh I agree completely. I had successfully avoided looking at runway collections -- good grief it isn't even really spring yet, except for maybe three days in April. I was really annoyed as well.

But then to me, May has felt more like Fall than Spring **smile** or more exactly, I was wearing corduroys, boots, and a velvet turtleneck yesterday and was perfectly comfortable and that is really messed up. I would much prefer to actually be able to wear those summer clothes rather than dream about them.

    Fall clothes -- Bah!

  12. Well, I could probably use some new fall clothes right now as I'm not sure the weather is *ever* going to warm up! We actually debated as to whether or not to turn our furnace back on the other night :-)

Sorry about the cold - it's torturous to be home and not able to sew

  13. I hate those kind of marketing ploys that bank on us being sheep who never go outside willing to do whatever they say.
I hope you get over your cold soon.

  14. There are, believe it or not, women who buy a season ahead so that they don't miss out on the those very stylish pieces. Of course they have a gazillion dollars, or should I say Euros, to spend. I put my heat on last night too. Where is spring? We will probably go from from cold to 90 overnight this year.

  15. I've had this complaint for YEARS!! I remember working in Sears handbag department. People would come in for white handbags in June, but they'd be sold out by May and we we stocking shelves with Fall handbags. Then, there was the 90ยบ+ day in August and I was in The Children's Place wanting to buy shorts for my DD. No summer clothes anywhere in the store!!! Not even in clearance !!!

  16. Ugh. It hasn't even hit 90 degrees here. Summer clothes? Only with a few sweaters over them! Fall clothes? NO WAY!

  17. We've had record setting heat the last few days in Dallas, Texas. I don't even want to walk too close to my coat closet right now! LOL!

  19. Go figure! I am still planning my spring/summer sewing. I did sign up for the Coat Sew Along and thinking of wool fabric is not so appealing right now.

I hope you feel better soon!

  20. Silly me. I thought Pre-Fall meant the Vogue Fall Wish Book, er, I mean issue was coming out.

Since it rarely dips below 70 degrees F. here, I think I wore my coat only for a week in the past year. And that was because I was in Pittsburgh! Fall clothes? No use for them.

    Hope you're feeling better.

  21. It's still supposedly Fall/Autumn here too! It's about 3 degrees Celsius ( which seems to be about 37 degrees F going by the thermometer). We have the fire going and had snow forecast tonight. Hey, if Black is going to be in again then I'm actually fashion forward for once, lol.

  22. Sorry to hear you are under the weather. Now, would that be fall or spring weather? And what happened to summer? Pretty soon they'll be setting up for Christmas in July!
