Strolling into October

I haven't sewn much lately.  I've been unpacking and getting the last of the bins leftover from moving put away.  Sort of like a squirrel storing away nuts for the winter, I'm making my place cozy for the long dark nights ahead. I do still have two pieces to photograph and share on the blog and they are coming...

For awhile I thought I would do a recap of September but y'all have already seen the makes so I'm moving on to share a few other things. First, thanks for all of your comments and the thoughtful conversation on my last post. I so appreciate it when you talk back to me.

Second, I want to acknowledge a sewing friend whose blog is closing.  Barbara Emodi, author of two sewing books, newly anointed cozy mystery writer and owner of the blog, "Sewing on the Edge" will stop writing her blog. She's listed her reasons and so many of them I understand. She is moving on to another creative challenge and I'm wishing her much luck in her future endeavors!

I'm featured on this week's episode of Black Women Stitch's podcast, "Stitch Please" where I discuss moving my Sewing Room. I talk about the reasons why I changed living spaces, how I set up my original Loft Sewing Room and why I ended up sewing in my dining room.  All info I've posted on the blog but the conversation with Lisa is so good that I hope you will give it a listen!  BTW, if you don't listen to her podcast, you should...especially the Sewing Room series.  She has highlighted several sewists who have interesting sewing spots and how they came to be.  Who doesn't want to know more about our fellow sewists sewing spaces, really?!

I added a screen to block the sewing room view when
you enter my apartment. Giving it a cleaner look.

Since I'm down to the last two pieces I want to sew from my cut pile, I will be using the Columbus Day holiday weekend (Yes, I know it should be called something else, because how do you "discover" a country that's already inhabited?) to make a fall cut pile. I have a couple of transitional Vogue 9299's I want to add to the pile. I've got this idea roaming around my creative brain about a pantsuit using the Friday Company Ilford Jacket. And is this the winter I finally break down and make some pjs for myself?  Well maybe? LOL!

Otherwise, things are plodding along here. Hope all is well with you too!

...as always more later!

  2. Listened to the podcast after reading the blog. That was so fun to hear you both talk about the sewing spaces. It is a favorite to see bloggers sewing spaces and how they arrange things. And I love how you kept working on yours until it was good for you. Thank you for keeping up with blog (I will miss Barbara and Flypaper thoughts). I hope your health is good after all the struggle you had last year. Jean

  3. I listened to your podcast while I was sewing today! It was really fun to listen to the conversation. I enjoyed it so much I went back and re-listened to your earlier episode too! I've been sort of frustrated with my sewing projects lately, but it actually really motivated me to enjoy the process more and also reconsider which aspects of my sewing area are working and not working and how that's impacting my enjoyment of the process. It felt like a morning sewing with friends and it was a super nice way to spend a Saturday.

  5. I love Lisa's podcast, I love finding out about other people's sewing spaces, and I love your blog, so of course I loved hearing you talk to Lisa about your sewing space! As for Barbara Emodi, today she posted that she will continue her flypaper thoughts in a reader's newsletter, so there is hope for us all.

  7. I listened to and was inspired by the podcast today. As simple as it sounds, If I could separate the lab from my resource storage, it could change my whole presentation to a dedicated craftperson, rather than eccentric hoarder!

    1. Mimi - right! It does "hide" all of the stuff I've collected especially since I have to climb stairs to get to it! *LOL*

  8. I really enjoyed your podcast, Carolyn. I listen to many and it is so refreshing to hear experienced sewists. There are not enough representation of the more experienced sewists WITH the newer sewists. I would like to see them both communicating together, regularly in the same cast. I know Barb was doing this and I really miss her input since she has stopped. It was so wonderful to hear you go at it. I know there are casts out there that are just older sewists but lets have the mix. We don't need to be separate. Diversity is so much more interesting. Thanks for giving it a go, Carolyn. You came off great.

    1. Bunny - the interesting thing is that each podcaster determines who is important to them and who they want to highlight. Probably why I don't listen to a lot of them because they all seem to interview the same people over and over again. Podcasters like Black Women Stitch, Sewover50 tend to highlight sewists who aren't regularly featured on the more well known podcasts. Which of course is why I'm more attracted to them!

  9. I read this post. All I could focus on was "Columbus Day" and how you clarified that it should be called something else. . . it is. . .Indigenous People's Day. As an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, it is frustrating that sooo many Americans STILL do.not.get.it. Thanks for at least acknowledging that it "should be" called something else!

    1. You are right. I should have called it Indigenous People's Day especially since I'm not an American, I'm a Black American and understand "the otherness" of America. BTW, it would have been nice to have a name to go with this reminder.

  10. Sneakers: I finally listened to this episode - and so happy for your re-thought of spaces - and also that you managed to do all of this while not being able to do it all. Inspiration for my current space definitely.
