New Vogue Fall Patterns

I know that everyone blogged about the new Vogue Fall patterns last week and they were pretty excited about the new designer offerings.  Vogue somehow managed to make several camps of home sewists happy with this offering...those that love the new designers Vogue is showcasing and those that love "arty" designers/gear like Issey Miyake.  I fall in neither of these camps and am plus size to boot so once again I felt deserted by Vogue.

But after thinking it over for a week and listening to some very sage advice from Sharon, I've decided that hopefully the next cycle of Vogue Patterns will offer something for my lifestyle.  But this is two pattern cycles that I really feel overlooked by Vogue...and I LOVE Vogue Patterns!  I'm not a BurdaStyle girl...tracing patterns blah!  McCalls Patterns are really aimed towards the younger set and I'm still waiting to see what the Early Fall Butterick collection will bring...so until my Vogue Pattern Magazine arrived late last week, I had pretty much written off the new Vogue fall patterns.

Now this isn't to say that I suddenly fell in love with this new fall offering, let's just say that with time and some patterns photographed on models I found a couple that I would like to own.

I totally overlooked this pattern on the website because the first pic is this drawing and it is totally uninspiring:

Vogue 8675

However, I saw this photo in the VPM and I totally want this topper now.  It will be great for crisp fall mornings but not too warm for the trip home from work.  Also, it will work over my fall dresses and give me a pulled together look for my office.  I'm thinking Vogue should have lead with this photo:

Vogue 8675 - what a difference!

I also really like this turtleneck pattern:

Vogue 8670

I love the variations and really would like to try my hand at making some turtlenecks for myself...btw, I live in turtlenecks from November to March ~ I can't stand my neck being cold ~ so I was excited to see this pattern.

There was even a dress I liked.  I don't know if I will be able to make this work for me with the waist seam but I really like the pleated skirt on this and may have to hybrid it...but I will pick this up during the next good Club BMV sale:

Vogue 8667

Otherwise...I'm still sitting here waiting...and if nothing appealing comes up in the next Vogue offering...I'm packing my tent up and decamping from the Vogue site.  I will just sew from the boatload of patterns I bought from Vogue last fall and realize that life is a cycle and if I wait long enough...it will circle back around to me.

...more later!

  1. I feel your pain. There are a couple of patterns i like, but really don't want to have to grade them up as many sizes as I would need to so they fit. I just started sewing again, the thought of having to do that to find stylish clothes is almost enough to make me throw in the towel. Hell, I'm sewing again because RTW doesn't make clothes that fit me right... Us plus size ladies shouldn't be an after-thought with the Big 4 - there's alot of us, the majority of whom don't want to wear mumu's!!! I apologive for the venting, trying to figure out the fitting of my first dress pattern in 20+ years is making me crazy......

  2. I agree that cardi photo looks so much more stylish than the drawing, I wonder why they didn't use it on the pattern. I've not decided what to get yet, still full on summer here so hard to think ahead to fall at the moment.

  3. Carolyn, I love that first pattern too! I didn't notice it last week when I reviewed the new Vogues, but I noticed it this morning and I ordered it soon after. It will probably be the first I make from this batch of patterns!

I hope the next batch of Vogues has more to offer you!

  4. The picture of the topper is gorgeous, makes all the difference.

  5. at first, I was so happy to see the fall vogue offerings but the more I looked the more it seems like its all been recycled, except for the tracy reese dress that is very beautiful. I love the dress you post, once again, the collar has been done many times before but its a timeless pattern so why not. The topper is very chic and coming to think about it, its very NY. I could see you in transit looking fantastic in you fall topper, sunglasses and gloves

  6. Thanks for highlighting these! I really love that turtleneck pattern, and even though I am suspicious of waist seams I like that dress an awful lot too. You are right, in the photo the cardi looks like one of those garments I would never take off.

  7. I agree with you Carolyn. That topper looked "DUMPY" in the drawing, but looks so much more stylish in that photo. The dress is very nice, one of only two of the fall Vogues that I really liked. But with temperatures still stalled in the mid-90's, it's hard to think of fall dressing. I will be putting that topper in my cart though, waiting for the next good sale!

  8. I was so much in love with a couple of the patterns -- the 1191 Michael Kors dress and the 1202 Donna Karan backless top & tightly wrapped skirt -- that I bought them BEFORE the current Club BMV sale. Now that I've had a chance to look at the construction for both outfits, I'm a bit overwhelmed . . . tons of tucks and darts in both patterns! Not sure I'll get around to making them, but they sure are fun to look at!

  9. I was disappointed too. Did I miss the Vogue Woman patterns in this collection? Did they discontinue that line?

  10. I dislike pattern envelopes with illustrations, instead of photos. The drawings do not represent the garments well, at all. It seems there are a lot of garments with volumous amounts of fabric. I am a plus size girl too, and cannot handle all that bulk on my frame.

  11. That photo of the cardigan does make all the difference. There are so many vogues that I have initially passed up because of the illustration, only to purchase them after I have seen them made up. Photos are so much more helpful.

  12. Carolyn: I liked the inverted front pleats on that dress too but I rejected it because of the fitted waist. Adding inverted front pleats definitely went onto my princess seam dress design list

  13. I've not even looked at the new patterns, other than what others have posted. There have been a few interesting items I may pick up. Although, given the amount of patterns I have (unsewn), I'm keeping it down to ones I love, or have a high "how did they do that" factor. Like you, the selections the last couple of rounds have made it much easier to not buy. I'm trying to move away from wearing sweatshirts at work, and that cardigan may make the cut.

  14. I really like that cardigan type topper too! The drawing was blah, but I am giving it a second look now that you posted this.

  15. One of the features I like best when BMV recently redesigned their website was that 99% of the patterns now have a modeled photograph view, even the ones with a drawing on the envelope. So, I make it a point to actually look at the different website views for each pattern release because the photos are actually there even if they aren't the "feature" illustration. I really wish Simplicity would take lessons from the BMV website. I can't tell you the last time I bought a Simplicity because it's just so darn irritating to try to look at their patterns online. The Flash crap takes forever to load and I'm on high-speed. (Oops ... mini rant. LOL!)

  16. I can see you in the topper now, how great is that little piece. hm, haven't been over to the site, but now will need to go to see what you are talking about. Will it be me just dreaming of things I could wear...

  17. I haven't blogged the new Vogues yet because I find I need to sit on them a bit; the initial reaction always modifies. I love that first pattern too, although I think I skipped over it at first -- this is why I wait.

I hope the next batch is YOUR batch.

  18. I've only just had the chance to have a quick look at the new Vogue patterns - I loved that dress pattern as soon as I saw it and definitely plan to order that one. Well spotted on that cardigan - the photo makes it look so fabulous and now I really want that pattern too.

  19. I agree about the jacket. It looks so much better on a real person. I think this is a great addition to any wardrobe. I think you can make the dress work. You made a dress with a floral top or bottom (can't remember which, sorry) that had a seam at the waist and it look terrific on you. I actually think that dress is very you.

  20. I had the exact same reaction today, C! Saw that jacket in the magazine and went "I like!"

  21. Thank you, Carolyn, for the link to your sleeve information. I will incorporate it in my "sleeve remake." You're a doll!

  22. I would so love for all patterns to have real models being photographed. And not in some weird position either, like Burda, where you can't see a dang thing about the garment. I can mini rant too!!!

  23. The dress pattern is on my list too. Some how I missed the turtleneck. I'm adding it to my ever growing pattern list. Hopefully as the days of summer roll by, Vogue will publish a more favorable collection for us mature women.

  24. Carolyn,
I agree totally with those first two Vogue patterns you posted. I'm looking through my stash and hope I have something suitable for that jacket.

  25. I totally missed Vogue 8675, just because the line drawings are so bad (it looks awesome in the real model picture)
For me this is one of Vogue's best collections; I ordered 7 patterns and I'm still craving for more. I only wish there were more tailored suits/coats.
I hope you'll find more patterns that you like in the next batch, but the ones you highlighted would definitely work, specially the topper

  26. I was in the camp of loving the new Vogues for fall, but I'm sorry that you didn't find much that spoke to you. :( Love that dress pattern and that is a great catch with the cardigan. I totally bypassed it, but made up and styled that way, it's really chic!
