A New Adventure

Somewhere long ago on a day that I was probably bored, I signed up for BurdaStyle.  Now I rarely go on the site, but I do receive their emails. Honestly, most times I just delete them.  I know, I know, quite a few of you just cringed...but if you knew how much junk I get in my email box you would understand...or maybe you wouldn't.

Anywhooo, today's email caught my eye because there was the word plus size in there somewhere...and even though I've given up all of my Burda subscriptions...today I clicked the email.  While perusing the garments in the plus size section, I stumbled upon this dress...

08/2012 #142

...and after looking at the technical drawing, I was sold.

So the process of getting the pattern downloaded began.  Can I make a few suggestions to make this process a little easier, more user friendly...

1.  There should be a guest check out.  Maybe someone wants to purchase the product without having to be a member especially since Burda Style magazines are so hard to find in the US.

2.  If you're going to offer the option to become a member, maybe the email that you need to log in should come quickly.  I couldn't remember my log-in so I attempted to rejoin using another email address.  Three hours later and I still hadn't received an email. Actually I gave up waiting after 15 minutes.  I'm old.  I have less time than more so I tend not to waste it waiting.

3.  So I signed in using my Facebook account.  Okay that was even worse...because then they want to post on my timeline and send notices to my friends.  Really? Do you really think I want to subject "my friends" to this?! (Oh and by the way, I would appreciate it if you didn't all start looking for me on Facebook. I'm not a big user and ignore most "friend" requests.)

I did finally get to purchase the pattern and print it out...ssshhh, I did it at work cause the printer is faster!  So this is what I came home with...

...and this is what my pattern is looking like as I'm taping it together...

Now I have to tell you this...I REALLY want to make this dress because I HATE taping pieces of paper together to end up with a pattern.  And now I'm in taping hell.

I do want to make the dress and I have a lightweight eggplant ponte that I'd like to use with this pattern.  Yeah, Momma don't lie...I'm sewing fall now! Okay, full disclosure I did start a red cotton eyelet sheath dress last weekend after I finished up Vogue 2090.

Oh, I didn't tell that you it was done...well it is...just waiting for pics because I finished it after my daughter and the grandkids went home.  Wanna a sneak peek?  Okay you don't have to twist my arm...here you go.

I'm really liking this dress, enough that I'm thinking I should remake it again in a ponte for fall with long sleeves ~ that way the dress won't need a lining. Because the last time I made it for fall/winter in wool crepe, I added a lining and the dress was really heavy and hot.  Great premenopausal...not so great now that I'm a grown ass woman! *LOL*

Okay reining it back in...I think the tape fumes are affecting me.  I will keep you updated on the taping and tracing (seriously?!) of the Burda pattern.  Hey I spent $5.40 for it so I should at least get a pattern right?

...as always more later!

  2. After several years subscribing to BurdaStyle magazine I cancelled my subscription at the beginning of this year after too many dud issues. Now I just peruse their mag patterns online when they are released and download those that take my fancy. Probably 3-4 so far this year. I have got used to the taping together thing now and don't mind it. I tend to tape together patterns in advance - usually when I have some down time but don't feel like sewing - or while catching up on TV or movies.

  3. I really just want to come sew with you for a week - play in your fabric and learn at your knee. I can't wait to see what's coming from the sewing cave now! g

  4. I'm really looking forward your Burda dress. I think it is based on a non-plus vintage 1956 dress that was in the magazine last fall (model 138-11-2012). I remember that some reviewers had some difficulty with the bodice gathers. It's a great design & I was excited to see the plus version now.

I hope Burdastyle is listening about the pattern download. I have a subscription, so I have not been tortured by it recently. Really, it used to be easier (back when they had free patterns too). However, I once tried to buy a pattern from the German site and that was totally impossible--I gave up!

  5. I saw that pattern too & love the look of it. Printing and then taping to get a pattern, not so much. I really look forward to seeing the masterpiece you create!

  6. Now that I've started using download patterns I have a stash of sticky tape:) When will the hoarding end...
I hope to see your dress/s pictured soon. I bet it's great having something interesting to work on again.
    Cheers.

  7. Looks like a great pattern - I am sure the taping will be worth it :)

  8. I have a Burda subscription, and I think I gasped when I turned to the page that has that dress on it. I love it so much, but I'm waiting for fall to sew it up. Can't wait to see your version

  9. I have to admit I have never found any Burda patterns that I liked so I also quit looking but after seeing your post about #142 I may have rethink Burda. It looks will a very nice plus size dress instead of the usual sack dresses that does nothing more than make you even larger than you are. Thanks for the review, now I hope that my purchase goes easier than yours.

  10. that dress pattern is very nice, worth all the hassle of taping pieces together (I actually enjoy doing that)

  11. Love that dress! And I feel your pain about taping a million pieces of paper together - so very annoying. But I bet it will be worth it in the end!

  12. Love the Vogue. Have a feeling the Burda is going to be stunning. Pity I'm on a different continent...I actually enjoy the taping. I find it meditative. Weird, I know.

  13. I would say "ditto" to all your Burdastyle comments, the ordering, the taping etc But I am very much looking forward to seeing you dress. Just wish I had a fraction of your sewing mojo, you seem to make everything up so quickly, how do you find the time with a very busy job as well ?

  14. The pattern looks nice and I can't wait to see your dress!

  15. I really like the dress and the line drawing looks very interesting. Of course printing, taping, and adjusting is a hell I don't want to experience now. I'll live vicariously through yours! LOL. TFS.

  16. I love that dress too, but I'm not a plus size. My one and only experience with downloading a Burda pattern came to naught so I never tried again. Thanks to Jen L I have found the non-plus version so I will try once more.

  17. As much as I love BurdaStyle patterns, I would probably NOt tape the pattern together. I guess I'll keep my subscription to the magazines.

  18. That dress has great design lines and looking forward to yours.

  19. I look forward to your make. I still enjoy getting Burda in the mail. I saw that dress too. Good luck with it. I think it will look gorgeous on you.

  20. Oooh, this is a really fun pattern! I'm so excited to see it on you! I like PDF patterns, but I hate BurdaStyle-- the website is super clunky and the instructions are hilariously bad. Also, maybe this is bad, but I tape together PDFs and then just cut them-- I don't bother tracing.

  21. I can't wait to see your version of this. I saw that it came out in a plus size version was was pleased. It was originally put out in the regular sizes a few months ago and I liked it then when it came out as well. I have the fabric for it and all, but have not gotten a chance to make it up yet. Hopefully this fall to winter I can finally make it up. I know that Melissa from Fehr Trade made it up when it originally came out and her version is lovely.

  22. I think that pattern is awesome. I hate taping. HATE HATE HATE. I now work someplace with a massive plotter and plan to use it next time I need to download a pattern.

  23. Love. That. Dress. Hurry up and get it to the modeling stage so I can decide whether to take the plunge too. Pushy much? YES!!! :-)

  24. Oh man, you must really want to make it. I have a rule where if its over 20 pages I don't bother. I HATE taping patterns together. Tracing I don't mind, but taping is horrible. That being said, I really like that pattern. Great fall/winter dress.

  25. I saw that pattern as well and thought it looked great but have not purchased yet, still in summer sewing mode. So I will watch and see how it goes with you, thanks! and I would rather tape any day than trace off those confusing Burda pattern sheets.

  26. I just bought the August Burda Style from the local news stand this morning. Thanks for pointing out this dress! I am going to have to give it a go too.

  27. I enjoy following your blog. I appreciate that you show your creations complete with hair, makeup and accessories. That can't be easy to do each time you want to post a picture of what you have made. I look forward to seeing more.

  28. Props to you for (1) enduring Burda Style, (2) taping a pattern together, and (3) enduring Burda Style. I unsubscribed from that hot mess a couple of years ago and haven't regretted it at all. If I am to go through taping a pattern together again, it better fit and sew itself. =)

  29. Oh, man! This is the perfect dress for most occasion. Too bad when it comes to Burda Patterns I am just waisting time. I can't wait to see the end results.

  30. It's going to be a beautiful dress.

  31. I like the dress. I'm sure it'll come out really nice. I don't like taping patterns and for that reason I never download them.

  33. I can't wait to see your version of this, I know it will be gorgeous on you! I tried to download a pdf pattern once and couldn't figure out how the thing went togegther.

Anyhow, I still love getting my Burda magazines although I mainly just daydream about sewing them instead of actually sewing, LOL. Weird, but I actually grew to enjoy the tracing...

  34. I'm new to your blog and want to thank you for all that you share and post!! As for printing and taping a pattern?!? Altering a pattern and cutting it out is enough of a trial - printing and taping? I don't think so!

  35. I'm not sure if you noticed (which you probably haven't if you stopped reading Burda!) but this is a reprint of a non-Plus pattern from last November, which I sewed up at the time and reviewed here: http://www.fehrtrade.com/gallery/658/vintage-wiggle-dress-photos

First of all, I LOVE my dress. Totally freaking love it. Thread-tracing and sewing all those curved darts is a massive PITA, though, and I kept mine closed. Because after all that thread basting and basting, then pressing, when I read that they want you to unpick it then baste it again every single time you launder it to maintain the pleats I was like "aww hell no I'm not!". I like them better closed anyhow and there's still plenty of bust room.

Just just be aware There's Another Way... Also there's TONS of completed versions of the November version on the Russian BurdaStyle site. Those ladies act FAST.

  36. Regarding taping pattern pieces together: Go to Amazon.com and search for "Swedish tracing paper". It's see-through like any pattern paper but it's very sturdy, almost cloth-like and it comes in 30 foot rolls. You can lay out your pattern pieces and tape them just enough so they don't move around and then trace them. It makes cutting so much easier.

  37. I definitely feel your pain. Working on a dress from the book now (loved it...perfect for a wedding but guide my hands Lord, it's a pain in the butt!).

Good luck! Can't wait to see the final product!

  38. I love Burda patterns, but you are right... getting them right sometimes takes a little longer than we like. In the end, however, the extra work was worth it. I am still using a Burda skirt pattern that I perfected more than 20 years ago. The last time I used it was to make a faux leather skirt last winter.
