I'm A Gadget Girl

This came today!

Now I have to warn you that I am not really a gadget girl. I don't even own a complete set of french curve rulers. I make do a lot! But my poor sewing machine has been back to the repair shop twice because the bobbin winder keeps going. Everything else works fine but not the bobbin winder.

After the last trip, the dealer was quite frank with me. I could purchase a new motor for the bobbin winder (several hundred dollars with parts and labor) or I could buy a new machine. He, of course, is recommending the new machine since my Janome is about 20 years old and I am its second owner. Well, I'm not quite ready to pick out another machine...its just too traumatic. I have set a goal for myself that I will get a new one right after the New Year once Christmas has passed and things have slowed down. But until then I need to sew.

When I saw this little gadget on Simplicity's site, I thought this might do the trick to help me through these perilous times! So I bought it. It's all plastic and I am sure that it won't stand up to any real abuse but I have made a bobbin with it using some double AA batteries and I am thrilled. It's compact so it can sit on my sewing table and with the batteries it doesn't need to be plugged in.

So tonight, I'm a gadget girl!

  1. Carolyn, I saw this gizmo just today in the new Hancock Fabrics brochure. I thought, how fun, but then I remembered my bobbin winder works. Drats.

  2. I am a bonafide gadget girl and I think this is great. My machine's bobbin winder works just fine, however, it would be nice to wind a bobbin without having to unthread my sewing machine to do so.

  3. Thats such a good idea! I'm the same as you - my bobbin winder has good days and bad days but I don't want to replace my machine just yet (I have my eye on a nice serger which is top of my shopping list). Think I'll start looking for UK stockists of this!

  4. These gadgets are very handy. I have friends with industrial type quilting machines that have similar gadgets that you'd plug into an outlet. Aren't you glad you found this gadget? I imgaine you'd be quite a wreck if you couldn't sew!

  5. I'll keep watching to see how this new gadget holds up. It seems to be all the buzz lately as THE new hot gadget. It's a great concept althought I don't really see the advantage if your on-board bobbin winder works. The ads say you no longer have to un-thread your machine - ???? - well you do if you need to make the bobbin from the needle thread!

  6. OOoooOOO I think I need one of these! The bobbin winders broke on two of my previous machines and just drove me nuts. (Lets ignore that fact that I am the common element here LOL) My current machine works like a dream, including the bobbin winder but as I sew alot of the same colors I can see the productivity of using a large spool of thread to keep several full bobbins handy :)

  7. I have been wondering why someone would want one of these, but your situation totally makes sense. I'm glad it'll get you through until your next machine.

  9. Just what I need! My bobbin winder went kaput 2 weeks ago and I'm borrowing my sis-in-law's machine. How clever! Thanks for the tip.

  10. Clever little gadget. Hope that it does meet your expectations. I usually wind 2 bobbins before starting a project so I don't run out of thread. If my bobbin winder didn't work I would definitely look at buying this gadget. Enjoy!

  11. Glad to know this works. I have seen it several times in the past few weeks, online and a local sewing machine/fabric dealer. I am a gadget girl too. I am trying NOT to get this!
