I have plans...loads of plans...

...and finally I have some time to work on them.  This weekend I will be making more basics using some pretty fabrics from the collection...

The lavender will become a TNT dress.  Can't decide if I want some seaming or a straight version of the dress. Once I start working with the fabric, I will know what to do. The gray knit will be a cardigan from Burda 8869.  Both pieces of fabric are from Fabric Mart acquired this year.  Of course, neither are still available on the website but pontes are currently 40% off, if you're interested!

I will spend most of the weekend in the sewing cave which I'm very excited about. I feel like I've neglected the time that I need there to make me whole. Which makes me even happier about the five days of sewing, I'll enjoy next week...in the sewing cave. I don't think I've hit my creative stride this year so I'm wondering what garment(s) are just on the edge there, waiting to come out of my sewing machine. What will I make this year that will take my breathe away...because I can tell you that I haven't sewn it yet!

Photography Follow Up:
I haven't sewn much lately.  So I haven't had photography challenges although my youngest daughter has volunteered her services which has eased some of my concerns.  As you know, I was using the self timer on my camera because the remote I bought, just wouldn't work with the camera.  Recently, I found the actual Canon remote for my camera and after doing a little investigating purchased it.

I will be trying this out soon.  I really want to be able to take pics outside on the front lawn without having to do the run back and forth thing.  I don't feel silly in the house because no one can see me but my neighbors just might think I've lost it if I'm doing that out on the sidewalk!

Speaking of photography and pictures ~ I found this great blog post by another Carolyn, who authors the blog, Allspice Abounds.  It's called "5 Simple Photography Tips for Sewing Bloggers."  It's concise, to the point and understandable for me or someone like me who is never going to really be "into" photography but needs good quality pictures for their blog.

Digging back into the photo archives:
Here is another photo of me.  I'm 8 and in the 4th grade in this school picture. I'm wearing one of my favorite dresses...seriously loved this dress!  Hey back when I went to school, little girls wore dresses to school with white ankle socks and saddle shoes. I don't think I wore jeans to school until I was in high school. Anyway this is me...at 8!

I'll have more sewing updates soon!

...as always more later!

  1. I love the 4th grade photo. You still look the same!!!!

    Have a great sewing weekend!
You know it's bad when I look at your photos and I know it is from Fabric Mart and that I have the same fabric in my sewing room!

  3. Your hair in your 4th grade picture is beautiful and so is the dress. We are about the same age, and I grew up wearing dresses and bobby socks, more often knee high socks as I got older. No jeans until high school. I see patterns from the 60's and 70's and they are ones that my mom made for me! And the fabric . . . love it! Enjoy your sewing.

  4. Wow, you look exactly the same! What a cute photo. Your dress is lovely. We used to have to wear uniforms. Wool blazers and skirts, white blouses and ties and a navy jumper or cardigan if it was cold. White knee socks and sensible shoes. Was practical if nothing else and a great leveller- no competing for best dressed in designer clothes. I love the lavender. Have a great time sewing. A week sounds amazing. Xx

  6. I feel exactly the same way about sewing - I really NEED that time on a regular basis. I guess a lot of us feel that way!

It's interesting what a difference of only 5 years can make: when I was in grade school, it was all pants, all the time. Not jeans, but definitely pants. And those ubiquitous early '70s crochet vests :-) I only had a couple of dresses. And we started wearing jeans in junior high - which was about the time you were in high school!

Loved the post on photography. Thanks for introducing me to a new blog!

  10. Thanks for the link to my photography post! I'm glad you found it useful. There's a lot you can do with photography without investing a lot of money, and I'll be curious to see how your new remote works out! :)

Your upcoming week of sewing sounds like a dream - enjoy it! My time off from work often involves a few solid days of sewing too... just need more time off, haha.

  13. OMG--your school 'uniform' sounds so much like mine. I have a 5th grade pic that looks almost exactly like yours (and I was wearing green, same headband and hairstyle). Can't wait to see the lavender creation. The fabric is beautiful.

  14. One way to tell I am a bit older than you, I wasn't ever allowed to wear pants to school! We even had the "hemline police" who made us kneel on the floor to prove our skirt/dress wasn't too short. Great photo. Have a fun weekend in the sewing cave.

  17. I remember being in the third grade when the school district finally allowed girls to wear pants to school.

  18. You were a ways behind me because I did wear bobby socks and saddle shoes, but no jeans or pants all the way thru school. Even when I went to work for Southern New England Telephone Co., we weren't allowed to wear jeans or slacks. One fine day they changed the dress code. We could wear pant suits, but both pieces had to match...the same fabric, same color. We didn't have a problem with the dress code and, back then in those days, we didn't have a problem dressing modestly no matter what we were wearing!!!

    Have fun sewing this week!!!

  19. You were an adorable child, and very pretty high school young lady, and a beautiful woman now :) Love the photos! And the dress you were wearing is so pretty. Did your mom make it? My mom made all my clothes growing up. I wore dresses all the time with white socks and patent leather shoes. I wish more kids dressed like that today.

    1. Interestingly enough my Mom didn't sew! I learned to sew from my Grandmother so all of my clothing as a child was store bought. It wasn't until I learned to sew myself that my clothing became handmade.

  20. I love the picture because it reminds me of what I wore in those days. We weren't allowed to wear pants until I was in high school! I remember wearing a long skirt in the 9th grade and it was almost scandalous!!! I think you ought to revive that dress by making a similar one today. I love the collar and think it would look great on you. The dress looks very structured and I can see that in one of your ponte fabrics!!

  22. Love the photo of you as a young girl - very cute! I had to wear uniform all through school - but my Mum still made most of the skirts/dresses/pinafores and knit our cardigans and jumpers. Happy days!

I wanted to drop a quick comment about remotes for your camera. . . . do you have an iPhone or something similar? I have a 'down and dirty' Lumix (also known as 'Panasonic', they have Leica lenses, love them!) compact that has Wifi capabilities. I then downloaded an App for my iPhone that turns my cellphone into a remote. The benefit of this is that I can not only zoom in and out but also see how the photo will look on my phone. So far it has worked really well. If you have a smart phone, it may be worth checking to see if there is an App that you could use.

    1. Nope I don't use an iPhone...my cell is an android. I love my iPad so much that I didn't see a need for an iPhone. I've heard others speak about using their iPhone camera this way but it's not enough to make me want an iPhone.

  23. Cute picture! When I was 8 years old, my mom took a tailoring class and made me a beautiful matching pants suit. She was very proud and sent me to school wearing it on a 10 degree snowy day. Oops, girls weren't allowed to wear pants even on the worst days and they called her to come get me. Nope. This woman had just slaved for a month making this outfit and they were NOT going to tell her it wasn't allowed! I'll never forget how mad she was at that principal!
