The Year Without A Plan

I love sewing blogland! I love the inspiration it provides through garments made, techniques discussed and fabric and pattern choices shared.

Lately spring/summer sewing ideas, thoughts and plans are showing up on a lot of the blogs I read. And it is wonderfully stimulating to read about each sewist's process and what they hope to make and achieve this season.

However, all of this makes me think about my own plans...and it hit me...I don't really have any plans. Yes, there are some things written down on a piece of paper that I would like to make but if I get to them fine and if I don't fine. Also, I've noticed that when I post an entire list of plans or do a blog entry about what I want to make, it seems like it doesn't all come to fruition...almost like I was satisfied just making the list or writing the blog entry...strange...

So this spring/summer season...I am going to sew as I feel it...wherever the sewing muses take me...whatever inspires me...whatever I feel I need to have in my wardrobe THAT's what I'm going to make...I am going to be the anti-planner! *LOL*

Seriously though, I think I spent so much of last year planning, following a plan, abiding by a list that this year my creative spirit is just crying out to be free...to sew whatever it wants! So...I will be avidly following what others are making! Cheering you on as you check off item upon item on your list! Unabashedly admiring your determination, your progress and your new wardrobes...while I will sew as the spirit moves. I will make whatever I need to fill a hole in my wardrobe. I will wander down a path I never took before because it wasn't a part of my plan...and I won't make a "sewing list!"

Yeap I'm free-stylin' it! Stay tuned 'cause I haven't the faintest idea what happens next!!!! *LOL*

  2. Well that sounds like a plan to me!! A very good plan. I know you have lots of wonderful garments already in your wardrobe so let the muses lead you where they will! Doesn't it feel good to not have any pressure?

  6. Plans are hard to stick to because life gets in the way. I like the idea of just filling in the gaps. It's great to dream of a well coordinated wardrobe, but the execution is hard to follow through when you have so many commitments to more than your sewing machine.

  7. That's kinda the same vibe Ann of Gorgeous Things posted awhile back: sewing WITHOUT a plan. When I read that, it stuck with me, and now that you're posting about it, I think you two may just have something! I like it! Great minds thinking alike!

  9. Welcome to my world :)
I don't make yearly plans, I just sew what I like. It's not a bad way to do it - really :)

  10. I'm with you - I'm working on my first "wardrobe" and I'm having a hard time staying focused because there are sooo many other patterns out there tempting me. Planning the wardrobe was the funnest part :)

  11. I'm with you! I don't sew because I need clothes, I sew because I love the process and the creativity. So far, my wardrobe represents a "happy accident" and I kind of like it that way.

  12. Carolyn, you're coming over to the dark side. I'm a huge follower of the no-plan-at-all method of sewing. It works for me.

  15. A plan to lose the plan - great idea!

  16. Yours is my kind of plan. I have no need of a coordinated wardrobe, so why not sew whatever the heck inspires and calls to me? Makes me happy!

  17. Sewing with a plan is definitely stressful. Change is inevitable when I am sewing; the newest fabrics and patterns beckon and the plans change.
But, I accomplish a lot more with a sewing plan than without, so I am going to continue my making lists and making storyboards and if my plans change, so be it.

  18. Plan your work and work your plan...works in the business world but not for sewing. I'm with you all the way Carolyn. It's uncanny how we are all so much alike in our sewing philosophies. I think that's why (I'm reaching for an excuse here, see) I have never finished one of the SWAPs. I go wherever the sewing winds take me. A dress for this occasion, a jacket for another, a skirt for the weekend...etc. So I'll be watching your free spirted adventure this spring and summer.

  19. Whew! This post makes me feel so much better. I do have a few garments that I must make but beyond that I shall go with the flow as well.

  20. I'm quite sure you'll do just fine without a plan and your inspiration will lead you into making great garments! This was *my way* form many years and only recently (influenced by the blogging community, no doubt of that) I have been *making plans* for an entire season! My plans are not written in stone, and I know they will change along the way because there's yet so much to see in the sea of inspiration!!

  21. You know, right now I'm in-between planning and spontaneous. I blame it on the spring weather! Who wants to be tied down to a plan when it's so glorious outside. I do have a plan in the works, but I'm not sticking to it exclusively. I've allowed myself the freedom work on things that are not a part of my plan--just because. And that's the beauty of sewing for yourself: you can move as your creativity prompts you.

Sometimes, not only do I have a plan, I predetermine which pieces get sewn first. I think I'll be breaking out of that soon as well!
